I got a truck, an enlisted driver and we each got an M4, I was given a beretta every morning at the arms room. And the administration was freaking out because they had to replace these teachers ASAP without any notice. And I remember watching all the tanks and rocket attacks in home room( 3rd period)on the world 🌎 news. I don't think our indoctrinated youth have such a thing in their schools. I know my children don't. Like I said. Thank you for your service and I'm glad you made it home. Sorry so long. But your statement pulled up all those memories of that situation. That has been my perspective on the .45 vs 9mm debate overall. Speaking without experience, just observation... It makes sense that those moderately competent (like myself) would benefit from less recoil and more rounds to "try again" with the 9mm / Beretta. Those with elite expertise, muscle memory, and weapon control can reap the benefits of the .45 / 1911; uninhibited by its "challenges". Like with a motorcycle; a liter-bike has far superior performance capability for the experienced rider, but a novice will find more success in the 600cc class.

@@christophermastrocola3048 HI, Thanks for the reply. I would suggest the problem is the hold of the pistol. It makes all the difference if a pistol feels and locks in to the hand well. Then whether the barrel is locked to the frame or floating. P38 Walther, makarov are more accurate, as a rule than most floating barrel types. However, once again the most accurate and comfortable gun I ever fired was a bog standard S@W 38 Police Special. Just superb balance and accurate as hell.

When I was about 25 I went to a range that rented out 1911s. Only thing I'd ever shot was a cheap .22 rifle. With almost zero instruction I was able to hit inside the torso consistently and had no problem with the recoil - although I was letting it rise, wasn't trying for rapid follow up shots. I'm 6' tall but not heavily built. On the same session I rented a Thompson submachine gun. Wasn't hard to learn short controllable bursts and again could fairly well stay inside the torso. I've never understood why the .45 is considered hard to shoot well, if I could do that in a minimal session. In later years when I followed the (endless) debates over the US Army adopting the 9mm the only advantage I could see was high capacity mags and being able to hump more ammo. Also good for smaller, lighter soldiers.

glad you visited Gander , i served there for a bit. i was also born in Newfoundland. As for firearms laws well ,compared to you folks, our laws might be considered restrictive. Presently you can own a pistol or revolver as long as it fits within the regulations. 10 round max, non-auto. You also have to have completed a federal firearms ownership course, pass a background check, and be a member of a registered range. You also have to secure your weapon in accordance with regulations. Ammo and weapon separate. Trigger-lock on Weapon. Weapon and ammo locked up. But Right now we have a law being passed to conduct a buyback on pistols, semi auto rifles, certain shotguns... or maybe not.... its very Canadian. Our government has been listening to the major population centers and ignoring the rural areas. So now the rurals are letting there displeasure be known by voting for other parties. I fully agree with the present rules on training, background checks, and storage. But banning weapons because it looks scary or that (sorry about this part but ) our southern neighbors have lost their bloody minds in the gun "culture", A surprising number of Canadians are forgetting that Canada is not in the USA. We have laws that define who can safely have a weapon. We have laws that provide years of jail time for infractions in firearm misuse. Sadly these charges are the first to be dismissed in court. But i do believe we will find a balance. Not that i trust any incoming conservative "savior". But that i trust the, pig headed, red tape stuffed, ever so slow, bureaucracy of government. Staffed by people that would make Ebenezer Scrooge, pre-Christmas, seem like Richard Simmons in his heyday. People who will grind any "hasty" plans into a delayed twisted shadow of the original design and insure that the government changes hands long before it can come into effect. We lost our way for awhile, following a "leader" who sold us a pretty face with a familiar name. But we are not usually a country of "cults of personality". Partys rise and fall, Prime Ministers come and blessedly quickly fade away after leaving office. So we are all waiting around and see how it pans out. See? Very Canadian

@@ralffsmith2655 absolutely. Like I said half my family is Canadian and rural folks. I spent a lot of time up there as a kid. The rural/urban gap is really apparent here in the US as well. The biggest difference (as far as guns are concerned) is that guns are considered a constitutional right here. I had this conversation with my mom and her husband about the differences in views on guns between Americans and Canadians, because essentially we are the same people in a cultural sense. In my view, the differences really boil down to how our countries came to be. Americans had enough of the British crown, declaring our independence and then fighting the Revolutionary War to kick them out. A few short years later, we fought the War of 1812 to reaffirm that we wanted them to stay out. That is the foundation of our gun culture and our distrust of tyrannical governments. Canadians on the other hand came about independence from Britain gradually, and through peaceful means. And I think complete independence didn’t occur until the 1980s. Even still, Canadians have a comfortable relationship with kings and queens, seem to have a sort of European view towards government. Just my 2 cents. 🇺🇸🇨🇦

@MDR-hn2yz very good points. Canadians, as a whole, don't think much about the British Monarchy, but we still respect our past while trying to come to grips with the dark sides of it. The treatment of native Canadians especially ( my own province of Newfoundland committed genocide on a full race of them) Honestly, we are not a lot different than Americans in a lot of ways, but fundamentaly, I think the big difference is how we look at our governments. With us, we look at them as a necessary "background noise" , to be ignored as long as its doing nothing too stupid. With American it seems politics is the top sports entertainment, not football. Each to their own i spose. Thank you for your response

Bottom line is use the weapon you can shoot the best and load it up with other than ball ammo. Back when the M-9 decision was made the Euros thought we were nuts. Unfortunately by then the movies had made the 9mm really sexy sounding plus someone with a working brain cell realized that the NATO Euro's didnt have any go to war ammo so we had to get an pistol that shot an inferior round so we could supply them with ammo. Modern 9mm Ball ammo has a bad problem with over penetration and doesnt do enough damage on its journey. A Former SF buddy of my related that he was once in an unknown country clearing houses and because he needed his hands available he was welding his M-9. A guy burst into the room with an axe and my bud put 6 center mass shots through the bad guys chest. Those shots didnt stop the guy/ Luckily his partner was able to fire a quick burst with his M-4 and a round caught the guy in the head.

Exactly, a lot of people don't realize that militaries and agencies, like the FBI and such, chose a weapon not because it's better and more powerful but because it's cheaper. They all hate spending money, .45 is more powerful but 9mm is cheaper, so to most militaries & agencies, 9mm wins, .45 for me though.

Add in the extra bolt and fire control group for the M4, because without it you only have one firearm with no back-up. Fine for distance fighting where one can disengage, not fine for door-to-door alley-to-alley fighting where an M4 'issue' could be the last issue that solider ever has.

Luke L. The M9 has been used in every single War since its adoption in the mid 1980’s. There, récord broken. Both World Wars lasted around 10 years all together. The conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan is going on 19 years. Also Marsoc, is replacing their M1911 with the M18. One of the main reasons for this change is the lack of ammunition the M1911 has in comparison with the M18. Often times in battle, volume of fire is more important. The 1911 is a good pistol, but honestly the military should have considered the 2011’s if they wanted to go that route.

And modern 45 acp ammo is also better. At the end of the day a 45 hollow point expands to about an inch. A 9mm expands to about half an inch. Your putting a hole twice the size into someone with a 45. Wound cavitation from bullets impacting organs doesn't do permanent damage until 2200 fps which neither pistol reaches. @NotEvenDeathCanSaveU

    2 жыл бұрын

I hope you're joking.. 9.0 is close enough to 11.43 aka .45 ? You meant to say: Not even close.. Right ? Almost 2.5 mm is a huge difference, hell even half a milimeter is a big difference in terms of caliber, more specifically their diameter and weight and with it the energy it delivers. Thats actually the reason why even in my country, that isnt anywhere near USA, our special forces use a .45 in their side-arm. Another big misconception brought forward by people who dont know jack about these things (and I obviously dont mean you as you didnt claim this in your comment) is the claim "15 is better than 7".. No its not, not necessarily, and certainly not in many actual realistic scenarios that might happen, not to mention that you are not really limited to a 7 round mag, there also 9 round mags that are pretty popular and that brings it up to 10 rounds on the first use, where its 8 rounds in the case of 7 rounders, yet everyone likes to for some reason act like military and special forces never pre-load the extra round into the chamber, which they do, especially in case of small firearms and on the first defautl mag, while interestingly even when it comes to rifle mags, many actually load less rounds (2-4 less) into certain rifle magazines if the spring strain prevents the mag to be loaded into the specific rifle with relative ease. Now back to the caliber issue I forgot to add, the higher energy is actually better when it comes to its energy because that energy delivers a bigger punch to both non-armored and armored individuals. When it comes to a non-armored person, the higher caliber diameter does way more damage, trauma and initial shock than a smaller one. This effect was many times questioned in the police after they were issued 9 mm handguns as there were and still are many cases where the suspect wasnt swayed enough by the damage those bullets were causing, and it was proven to be true in hunting esp. in case where the animal for example a deer wanst hit properly in its heart. When it comes to armored individuals, the energy applies also here. Maybe you've seen videos where they shoot their pistol at like level II or IIIA or III body armor and the water jug behind the vest cracks and leaks water without even penetrating the vest? How is that possible right? Well as I mentioned its the tremendous energy the bullet carries, and its only logical that a higher diameter and weight caliber will do a bigger impact, in fact when comparing certain bullets types of some 9mm and .45 rounds the actual weight of the .45 can much more than those of a 9mm and I think its only logical that a higher weight in most cases directly correlates with higher energy. Thats why you see special forces using .45, because the higher force (or physical trauma when non-armored) it delivers on those first 2-3 hits on close distance literally shocks and disorients the opponent more so you really dont need the high capacity if you're trained properly and dont miss often. In fact this is even more efficient than armor pen ammo on close distance, because logically armor pen ammo is designed to penetrate, and while it injure the person if it penetrates, even mortally perhaps, it does not induce as much trauma, thus the person can still regain their focus and potentially retaliate with their firearm and most probably successfully hitting you with their fire.

Plenty of videos (with 9mm) of guys with a gun getting shot 10+ times and still keep/running/shooting the officer until either ~60-90seconds pass and body starts to fail or the officer hits the spine or head which will drop them. The 45 normally 1-2 shots will stop a person within 5seconds. I would assume their 9mm is +p or +p+ but they normally don't share that info so possible they are using standard pressure 9mm (however, talking with cops; a lot carry +p hollow point). Either way; after seeing that multiple times the 45 is better & has the stopping power to take down a treat right there. Now the 9mm will end up killing/stopping a person but seems to have a delayed affect of 60-90seconds on a person (most I assume were on crack or meth; so it almost seems superhuman it takes a minute or so before the treat is down). Even knowing this I still prefer a 9mm(with +p) as it is easier to handle, more bullets, less weight. If you have a treat with a gun and need them to drop (to avoid return fire) 45 is best but you can practice head shots and the 9mm will do the same thing

In my humble opinion and experience, I have used a stock Colt .45 1911 A1 in near daily combat for 20 months in Vietnam 1969-1971. It never jammed. It never failed. It worked dirty or clean, it did not care. And I mean seriously dirty. Under combat duress, if a gun I have won't work dirty, I don't want it. The .45 Colt design has an extremely unique feature that if the barrel can be locked tightly to the inside of the slide, a firm and consitent fitting to the locking lug recesses, it makes ZERO difference how tight the slide is to the frame. A barrel locked tight to the upper lug grooves, will be locked to the slide and locked to the sights. It will always shoot where the sights are pointed, regardless of how the slide might be rocked or tilted to the frame. A loose frame to slide fitting allows more dirt/mud and to keep working perfectly, even to the point of pushing off extra dirt with each recoil. I have done this over thousands of rounds and combat pistol competition of for over 12 years. I am stunned how many gunsmiths insist on tightening the slide to the frame and greatly diminish the reliability of the overall system. ....I have also watched competitors and gunsmiths use WD-40 on their firearms. This is simply the stupidest thing I have ever witnessed. As a Master Locksmith I can tell you WD-40 is the wrong lubricant, for just about anything. Try spraying in the action of an Uzi, MP5 or an Ingram MAC 10. 90% of the time the weapon will freeze up before the end of the first magazine. I have had put down over 15 of the enemy persuasion up close and personal with my .45 during that period in Southeast Asia. I was in Aircraft Rescue & Retrieval with the AmeriCal 23rd Infantry Division. Dropping in on downed aircraft and helicopters looking for survivors, airplane parts and weapons and having to shoot our way back out of ambushes, booby traps and more, gave me a bit of experience with the hand gun in close combat. The .45 is not the best "killer". The 9 mm might exceed in that factor. The .45 is the best "stopper" of the two, and both are better than the .40 "short and weak". When you are in a situation where you have to draw a handgun, the enemy is danger close. Your first task is not necessarily to kill them, it is to STOP them from anything they are doing. Like pulling the pin on a grenade. Stop them immediately regardless if it kills them or not. In this regard the .45 caliber scored 100% for me, even with shaky combat aiming. An Interesting criticism pops up now and then about the grip angle, it points the gun at their crotch in a normal one or two hand extended hold, or even in the superior Weaver Grip. This is truly an advantage and should be used for full effect. If you are going to take several rapid shots, the recoil will make the gun climb. By the second round it should be dead center of mass, and the third at their head. A good groin shot damaging the pelvis is an amazingly good stopping effect. it just gets better from there on up. The 9mm is sorely lacking in this ability to stop an opponent immediately. The largest an expanding bullet pulled out of organic matter averages about .41 caliber, up from the .35 caliber of the 9mm. This is still smaller than a solid non expanding bullet that starts off at .45 caliber. The 9mm can shoot clear through the average combatant, leave two exit wounds and hastening demise, but this lacks serious "stopping" power. Don't mistake killing power with stopping power, I hope this has been made clear for the moment. If I could shoot a 10 pound bowling ball out of a handgun, I would. The matter of softer recoil is a moot point. Most beginners cannot tell the difference between the recoil of a fully loaded 9mm and a stock .45, and both guns weigh about the same if you add the 14+ rounds of 9mm. The effect of recoil is 75% psychological. And the sonic crack of a 9mm on unprotected ears is much harder to cope with for many than the subsonic stock .45. The case for extra rounds, up to 18 in a 9mm. This argument does not hold water in 99% of the real life experiences I have had - as a combat requirement. This is what I have seen happen at least 10 different times in a firefight.... The extra rounds you need to make your opponent STOP, by their eventual passing into the after life, by shooting holes clear through them and anything or anyone behind them, ----------- takes too much time when you have other multiple opponents shooting at you or bearing down on you. ---------- At danger close you need to have one round that can do the job of stopping each one immediately. Whether they expire right away or not. This gives you the time and/or opportunity to run for cover or help the rest of them expire expediently. If necessary, reload and go back to finishing your task. ALWAYS COUNT YOUR ROUNDS. If you are relying on the pistol to pray and spray as you relocate to a safer area, you usually have the wrong weapon for the situation, and should have brought the right one to begin with. In that scenario I have found the Igram MAC 10, in any caliber, as a competent room broom. Just realize that using up a 30 round magazine in 1.4 seconds is one of the most efficient ways in combat to disarm yourself. Since those days I have become a Master Locksmith and Master Pistolsmith. My current hand gun is the same .45 I carried in the Southeast Asian Wargames, that my father gave to me. He carried it while serving in the Pacific Theater during WW2, as a Master Sergeant in Marine Corps with Carlson's 2nd Raider Battalion. On competition days and early training days at the Gunsite Ranch, Prescott Arizona with Jeff Cooper and the bunch, I grace it with a dual stack, special formulated tempered aluminum frame I helped test with the early Para-Ordinance company. It will comfortably hold 14 rounds, which in turn fills my grip perfectly and not needing extra padded grips. It adds a bit more weight to the gun, stabilizes the sight picture, and ever so slightly reduces felt recoil. It shoots like silk and the gun is a better shot than I am.

As a kid going to gun stores with dad and uncles (all who served) I always heard the stories of the 45’s stopping power. One in particular story was how one shot of a 45 threw a charging enemy soldier out of a fox hole. It’s always been surreal to hear these stories since I was a kid. I was the first generation that didn’t have to serve. Thanks for your sacrifices.

The exact .38 round, the .38 Long Colt or .38 LC, that was supposedly ineffective against the Moros was a lot weaker than the 9mm Parabellum/Luger, though. Some contend that it was their shields that reduced the effectiveness of the .38 LC, while the significantly higher velocity 9mm would have penetrated them better than the .45 ACP. Eh, who knows, but perception sometimes counts for a lot.

In USMC Lore, we were told that the Philippine guerilla fighters were often "juiced up" with native versions of natural amphetamines. So, they would keep coming after being shot with the .38 long colt rounds. While the .45 Colt stopped them in their tracks. That story was repeated at Subic Bay.

@@tjmul3381 I believe what you're saying, however I think the idea of stopping power of this kind (i.e. making this much of a difference) in any ordinary pistol caliber (as in not .500 S&W Magnum) is a myth. That's why I like the story/rumor of the shields possibly playing a part in this. Some calibers are demonstrably more penetrative of hard materials than others, so there can be a big difference in this case. .45 ACP will most definitely out-penetrate .38 LC, and be more effective after penetrating a shield, depending on how strong the shields are, of course. On that note, though, 9mm Parabellum is generally more penetrative of hard barriers than .45 ACP, so arguably 9mm would or might have been even more effective in this scenario, hypothetically.

He said he often crawled up close to the enemy and the 45 was easier to use in the thick brush than his B.A.R. However it also saved his life when a green recruit fell asleep on watch and let an enemy sneak past. He caught my dad sleeping and was about to stab him when my dad woke up and shot the enemy with the 45 he always used as a pillow, held in his hand while sleeping.

I agree with what you're saying about the 1911, that it's mainly a status symbol. It does have some practicality with its higher power 45 round, but for that power to be practical, the person carrying it needs the skill and training to operate it effectively with the heavier recoil. It reminds me a little of Patton carrying that nickel plated Colt Single Action Army.

I never carried a pistol while in the Crotch and as a civilian I bought a few 9mms and just didn't feel the connection. I've since owned two 1911 Compacts and they both stood head and shoulders above anything else I've owned. The 15° grip angle and the width fit my hand perfectly and I don't even feel the need to aim, though I do, as the sights line up perfectly without my having to alter the position of my wrist. I used to work for Beretta and they make excellent pistols but I always shot above and to the right with their 92s and 96s. My Sig 1911 Compact Carry puts the rounds right where I want them and in the smallest groups I've ever shot. Yes, it's only 8+1 but I think that'll work for me in most any instance. I am an unapologetic 1911 guy!

True there is still a reason why people say it’s the gun that forgot to become obsolete also a lot of modern handguns are based of the 1911 so if they use at heart the same system in theory it can be modernized because the gun at heart still has potential

1911s are fine if you like that sort of thing but not as a military combat weapon imo. If I had the budget, sure, I’d buy some $2000 1911s. I don’t have that budget so what’s carry needs to be reliable and durable and repairable. For me, that’s a Glock or most reputable manufacturer striker pistols, not the old folks 1911

I don't know much about firearms. I was aeromedical evac in the Air Force. We carried the M9 on combat flights. The rare times I agreed to go to the range for fun, I also managed to fire the 1911. In fact, the 1911 was the only firearm I kinda enjoyed shooting. As someone that can throw a pistol more accurately than often shoot one, I feel I shot consistently more accurately with a 1911. Of course, that could also be due to less stress at the range for fun compared to qualification and/or the 1911 being private property, it was kept in better condition. Almost certainly with the latter, all the M9's I was ever issued were junk. One time at the qualification range, the frame of the M9 I was using broke. I never wanted anything to do with that weapon again after that. If the core of the weapon breaks that easily during qualification, what use is it going to be in theater?

The replacement of the M-14 by the M-16 was a decision by military planners based on research that confirmed Reducing a weapon’s caliber and increasing the velocity of its cartridge, as well as allowing more ammunition to be carried for the same weight worked well for the infantryman’s rifle, the same works for their pistol. In the years after WW2 the lethality of the 9mm round equaled that of the .45 Colt. A double-action first shot, single action 2nd shot & subsequent shots allowed for fast, accurate following shots. A longer barrel meant more accuracy. An open slide design keeps the barrel cooler & allows easier clearing of stove-piped rounds. The Beretta’s design that puts the magazine directly in line with the chamber eliminates a feed ramp that can cause jams. 15 rds meant you had more than 2X the ammo of a M-1911.

The main use of a pistol in war is to provide souvenirs for the other side, at least that's what I would tell those whom I would train on the L9A1 9mm Pistol (the British name for the FN Browning GP35, also a cool-looking pistol which is simple to operate) when I was in the mob. I've never heard or even read of any British soldier shooting an enemy soldier with that pistol in any of the many post-WWII conflicts we've fought, either. Good thing too, 'coz I used to also tell people that if you need to use a pistol, you really are in the sh1t: unless one practices with one all the time. The great American author (and Pacific War veteran) James Jones wrote a short novel called 'The Pistol' about an average GI's attempts to keep hold of the M1911 he was issued for guard duty the night before the Pearl Harbor attack on his base. In all the post-attack excitement, nobody asks him to return it, but everyone knows he has it, so they try to get it off him.

"Grunts aren't trusted with pistols." *laughs in Crewman, Medic, Machine Gunner, and Squad Leader* Ah yes... My Squad mentality. Grunts definitely don't get pistols, and nowhere is this more true than in Squad itself. And this also gets my credit as a Filipino. It is true that the .38 was used by US troops and they found that it didn't always take out whatever it is they were shooting at. And fast forward over 200 years later and even we are debating about the whole .45 ACP vs 9mm thing today. Both police and military units still use both, and even criminals can get their hands on the stuff.

The .38 cal story has more to it like how the natives basically fought with full body tourniquets arm, legs, waist, chest and everywhere they could have got cut during battle slowing the bleeding and allowing them to fight longer it’s was a tradition among the warriors so when the Calvary engaged them if it wasn’t a critical head wound these native warrior could carry on after 5+ body shots, were each soldier only had a 6 shot revolver and some only had 5 witch was the most reliable safety at the time an empty chamber.

stopping power AND magazine capacity are a meme. shot placement is what matters. it doesn't matter if your 9mm glock has 17+5 mags if you can't hit a damn thing, you're just more of a danger to the people around you. 1911 is the more accurate gun

the .45acp was originally chosen because it would drop a cow with the least amount of rounds when compared to all other calibers available at the time which included 9mm... 9mm tends to shoot through (we're talking standard ball ammo) so you end up needing more shot on target to get the job done

The 9mm is fine for personnel that will be using a handgun as a last resort. The 1911 is used by the special ops forces you mentioned because they are way more likely to have to use a handgun in an offensive capacity and therefore need an ultimately reliable handgun with an even more reliable cartridge.

I never served myself but I did know several active duty Army officers who fought in the First Gulf War. In the later late 1980’s the Army replaced the 1911 with the Beretta M9. My friends told me that some command officers made it a crusade to remove the 1911. Dire threats & punishment were trotted out if any officer continued to carry the 1911 instead of the Beretta M9. Other units were less anal retentive as complete replacement was not fully implemented. I believe some of the deployed Guard units still mostly carried the 1911 as they were too far down the logistical food chain. Anyway, both these officers carried the 1911 when they went North during Desert Storm. Shortly after they returned to the US they grudgingly began to carry the Beretta but still missed the 1911. I do know after they departed the service they purchased their own 1911’s.
