this is definitely chain noise. It is stretched and sounding like this. You can easily take the valve cover off to check this. Pull a new chain and the noise will go away. I've already done this.

@@serbancordis3416 I bought a new chain and was going to pull it, but I'm scared that the guides will brake up under tension without changing them too.. How's it worked out so far ??? Any problems with the guides holding up???

@@stevestar9999 Hello, we would like to try a chain change on our 1999 W163 too. Have you solved the problem by changing the chain?

@@leongebler5276 Leon,..I'm afraid I haven't done anything about the stretched chain since I made the video three years ago... I bought the chain and tensioner..And was planing to do the "Russian chain pull"...But after thinking it over a bit.. I decided not to... My concern is with a new tight chain, it would put undo tension on the 20 year old chain guides..breaking them up and I would be worst off than I was to being with.. Unfortunately the engine has to come out to replace the guides... The good news is,.. I've been babying the ML in the past three years,..And it hasn't gotten any worst...if anything it doesn't seem as bad as it was three years ago.. Maybe a little wishful thinking on my part... In the past three years, lots of oil changes and NO HARD ACCELERATIONS..seems to be away to put off what really needs to be done...THE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE PULLED..

@@stevestar9999 thanks for the info, I have the same noise on a high mileage engine (270K miles) So I too am doubting whether it's worth replacing just the chain and tensioner when the guides could be so old. Made me feel a lot better to hear you were able to drive it for a few years without it getting worse!
