Sofubi" Toy Makers
The designer toy movement has inventively made it's way to the "sofubi" scene, an abbreviation for "soft vinyl" in Japanese. For more than 10 years, Mori Katsura of Realxhead has been creating original action figures using his 60 year-old process, which includes Mori's secret weapon, a 70 year-old master painter named Goto. Vice follows Mori, an innovator in the indie soft vinyl scene where he collaborates with Goto to produce new toys.

Im so happy I made this. It warms my heart to see people still watch it

2021 here, just watched it for the first time. Interesting that they didn't show Real Head's actual toy making process, just the painting. His stuff is super-expensive and very difficult to obtain these days, I wonder if he's upgraded to a bigger studio now?
Thank you for bringing such a great video. I have watched it many times in the past two years, and it brings me new feelings every time I watch it.
Years on and this is still one of my favourite videos ever. I would really love more content or a series of profiles on different sofubi designers. I love how punk and DIY has found its way to physical toy art-object-media (???). Saving up to succumb to collecting in the years to come.

Interesting collaboration between these 2 guys. Its nice to see them enjoy what they do for a living instead of being stuck in a dead end job.
Wish I had more of an opportunity to speak with Mori back at NYCC a few years ago. He seems like a totally rad guy.
really great video. i have loved mori's toys for years! awesome behind the scenes look at him and goto working together
could really use more videos on vinyl toys in Japan or expand on this subject.

the toys that these guys make are really cool i would get one of each simply because each one is unique and the amount of effort put into them pretty much shows the passion they have for making a pretty awesome action figure.
respect for these artists
thank you for english captions, very cool sufubi
Brings back memories from my childhood, this toys still catchers my heart today.
Great artists and great episode! Keep the good work guys!!!!
what an awesome pair. hope they find success in their work!
They make a great team, what a good pair. Even though they have a significant age difference, it's clear that they both learn a lot about life through each other.
Seeing the toys brought up feelings from my childhood. Thanks for the video.
more videos like this please :) feeling the passion and pride in their work.
I keep watching this over and over again. I need more.
mori and goto san are awesome!!!
thank you
super cool!!
He hit on a very interesting thing regarding toy production. The people that can do all or most of the aspects of toy production in house are going to be way ahead of the game. Specially true today
didnt care for the toys i stayed because of those two wonderful men
Thank you
Loved seeing how these toys are painted! Wish they delved deeper into the actual prototyping and vinyl casting... Perhaps for another time, hint hint?

I don't think they took the hint boys
Didn't learn a lot. But nice to see these two get along well.
i still love watching this :D
This video is such a vibe
WoW...Very interesting and very touching the relationship between the two...Awesome designs ...Peace from CANADA :)

EXCELLENT ..
This was interesting and enlightening. I recently interviewed up and coming artist, Xelephant and saw his collection. Very impressive and he will be dropping his own custom toy soon.
Please do another one of these videos!
Very nice : )
I'm a toy collector myself and I personally feel that the work they have done are very remarkable. I really love the design and passion they have. The toys look great and I hope someday I can own them.

dat ghostbuster outfit ;D cool
Good person is down to earth attitude..
Very cool to see that they are all made by hand. That is very rare nowadays. Any toy you can buy at the store in the west is probably made by child labor in a giant factory in China or Southeast Asia.
it makes me cry when i remember what happened to Mr. Goto-san!😢
watching Goto-san paint is like therapy
to make tomorrow more interesting than today. ..
Love to see people passionate on what they are doing. I hope I can get out on working at mcdonalds.
One thing about Japan is that there is no stigma associated with toys being only for children. As an adult toy collector of godzilla sofubi- transformers- and star wars I run into this kind of judgment all the time. I feel it's healthy to buy something for the kid who grew up too fast. Do it if it makes you happy.
los artistas dominaran el mundo!
2:04 I want one of those so bad ! Preferably the pink one... I wish these were available in the US xP
The song choices for this video are beautiful. Damn vice jp.

I see those Japan Vinyl figures as more Art than Toy.
Vice, i wish the subtitles were larger, thumbs up so that they can see this comment please.

like they said in the video, they use already existing characters and make it another concept and look. might be why.

Insects in general (e.g. the Japanese beetle) are prevalent in the country. More so than just pets, they're also used as a medium for a lot of things.

Open an online store with a translated English option, and you will sell more .. Most companies in Japan are not trying to sell more , the restrain their sales to Japan . In a world with access to every products on the planet , Japan is really behind . I've been in a hobby where most of my items comes from Japan , I had to go thru proxi so many times in the last 10 years . If they would have opened their products to the rest of the world , their economy would be way better .

Artificial scarcity keeps the toys expensive. They are so in-demand _because_ they are so hard to get. If Real Head opened up his store online then sure, he would sell more, but he would also have many people asking why he charges so much. His toys are very hard to get.
