Just bought a new Behringer 2600, and could not be happier. I grew up in the 60s-70s lusting for one of these. Finally got my hands on one, and it has surpassed my expectations. Then new one from Behringer has a lot of nice added features too.

Just bought the Behringer 2600 for $650, and could not be happier. Brand new 2600 with some cool new features, not available on the original.

Cool demo. It bears mentioning that the re-released Korg ARP Odyssey is just a scaled down version of the 2600 - so you can actually get a huge variety of 2600-ish sounds from an Odyssey, the main difference being that the Odyssey has only two oscillators, and only sawtooth and pulse waveforms (although pulse width is adjustable on both). Considering the price of the 2600 and the rarity of such, the $600 ARP Odyssey module is a steal. Two of them would surpass a 2600 in many ways. Many of the patch points on the 2600 became switches on the Odyssey instead of patch points, which made it more convenient for live performance use. I'm a huge cheerleader for the Odyssey because I think it's re-release has been largely overlooked by the synth community - and it's a sad thing because it's a monster synth if you spend some time digging into it, just like the 2600 before it. So, if you liked what you heard on this video and can't afford $4000 for a used 2600, go for one or two Odyssey modules. You won't be disappointed!

Bill Vincent agreed. I have the Korg arp. Don't mind the mini keys, but the MIDI spec is bad. No pitch or modulation over MIDI. Thank God the module version fixes this, as the sound is all there.

I have the Korg Arp Odyssey and I'm currently borrowing a Behringer 2600 and my plan is to just buy a 2600 oscillator module for the sine wave because that's the main thing I feel like I'm missing with the Odyssey.

Nice Demo Matt, the 3620 kybd offers much more, I was one of the lucky ones, when I ordered mine I was expecting the 3604 kybd and much to my surprise received the 3620 kybd, love it, your right it is kind of basic and straight forward, but looks intimidating.

Is that possibly one of the earliest Tom Oberheim mods which supplied the duophonic function? And, no oscillator sync? How is that missing from the 2600 but not the Odyssey?

At 8:30 the presenter plugs VCO1 square wave out into VCO2 pulse out. I think he meant to plug VCO1 into VCO2 pulse wave modulation input in the CV control section underneath. Otherwise what is happening is that the two audio rate VCOs are being output on the same bus. Overall, a nice demonstration of some of the 2600s features.

@@holygeneration7 Yes indeed. It can be very musical, but also fun to explore strange sounds, with all the interesting modules it has in it. It’s a fun musical puzzle :-)

An envelope follower is not the same thing as a pitch-to-voltage converter. It produces a voltage proportional to the input level of a signal, not one derived from its frequency. No wonder he had trouble getting it to work!

I think a lot of comments are a bit harsh. The description says it is meant to show how the ARP works. Imo it mostly a demo of how it works, not really an explanation. I do know some things about synths and then it is nice. Main problem is that the camera continually is to late in following the hand of the presenter, so there is a time lag between what he says and what you see.

Not bad! I think the best overal coverage of the 2600 for someone just starting out is probably the video by Perfect Circuit.

I’ll get my behringer 2600 for sure. And for $150 I get a cheap sequencer that is also anTD3.

This is why analog decks are just so useful. It's not that you can't access these things on a digital unit, it's that you've got everything, "exploded" at a glance. Patching in digital sequencers is still useful but I'd still rather patch them but combine that with the numerous manual controls.

I really would like to work for Red Bull Music....in France...!..I like this company.They really mad something for youth,not only money for mmoney ....and thats cool.

it's the reverb of the arp .. korg 2600 same problem. behringer 2600 digital reverb no phase issues there.

Yup, you shouldnt be doing that but these are pretty robust and ive never heard of anyone making their 2600 go boom so I wouldnt worry, but dont do it. But dont worry.

In your mind . The sound changes depending on which way he faces because the mic is on his collar. There is no particular flanging going on. It just is the sound changing slightly due to where he is facing...

In my text: The annoying short delay is like a STATIC (i.e., not changing) flanger sound effect. Not a flanger DEVICE involved. :-)

Not a great presentation.

I wonder if anyone sitting there in his audience is sitting there like im sitting behind my computer enjoying the presentation but not really following a lot of the terminology. Looking at you 26:09

I share the opinions of others in these post. What is the level of knowledge of that audience? Is it necessary to explain what is "attack and decay" during these presentations? This means that it is a very very low level, so many of the interesting functions and the experimental results would be a lost in time OR its a show-off video to promote the idea of "famous EDM artist must have expensive toys like the ARP".

I feel 'cool' is overused here

the 2600 is a true masterpiece, but learning it isn't possible without a fundamental Physics Of Sound course or several tutorials in modular synthesis. David Bowie's & Pete Townshend's secret weapon...

He keeps on saying 'normalisations' - He just means 'connections'. Plugging a patch lead in will break the connection that is shown and allow you to connect in something else.

in synthesizer parlance, something being connected in the circuit until you patch into a patch point is being 'normalled'.

This guy really doesn't know what he's talking about. At 12:25 he says time constraints. I think he means time constants. At 36:15 he says the early ARP Odyssey's filters don't self-oscillate. *All* ARP Odysseys had filters that self-oscillate.

40:50 The 808 processing is the best bit of this demo (it really gets things moving),. The rest isn't that good - not structured well-enough for beginners and not enough good stuff for people who already know analogue synthesis and just want to hear the 2600’s own cool sounds.

RBMA tries to censor opinions, and well reasoned commenting. How interesting! I could have never believed how uninteresting and passe' Analog Synthesizers could have become, when I first got acquainted with em' first hand about 18 years ago. It's like every ex-VST producer gets a little bit of money and acquires a "Legendary" synth (insert your Model D's Arp 2600's, Oberheim OB-X's, System 100's, etc...) and there are workshops and seminars where these guys (who could not btw play a keyboard to save their life) "demonstrate" these said instruments, while actually not saying or demonstrating really nothing at all. People have got too comfortable. The music has got too comfortable. Over saturation happened. I can't believe how yawn inducing presentations can be given to instruments as fundamentally exciting as these. And there's this funny thing called Internet nowadays, where every kid on the block can study these very basic principles anyway, in the span of 10 minutes. One asks the question; what is the point of this?

I agree. These millennial upstart 'producers' stumble upon a technology that's 40 years before their time and suddenly proclaim to the world "Wow folks, this is the real deal..!" as if nobody before had utilized them and they are making this fantastic unique discovery. Like the twenty-something self-proclaimed 'Pro Tools Gurus' asking around trying to suss out where they can find some vintage tube mics. Do they really think people don't know the value of these and are just going to hand them over to you for cheap? How stupid can you possibly be?

@Patrick Linnane I don't know if the Quadra ever saw the light of day. R&D for the ARP Avatar basically put the company in shambles. The technology just wasn't there yet. I also hear that they couldn't keep up on customer repairs so out of business they went.

@Patrick Linnane The software versions just don't cut it for me. They don't sound right. Also, there is something about a tactile interface that puts the user in direct connection with the instrument that no software emulation can recreate. Fortunately there are 2600 clones out there that are very good and look great. San Pedro Labs for one made a wonderful instrument which is a perfect reproduction of the Grey Meanie with illuminated sliders. Unfortunately they don't stay in production for very long.

no idea but it is killing some of my time here on earth. I don't think that the presentation was as negative as you are making it out to be. I think watching these videos gives me repetition so that when I build patches or tinker with my own synth I can say oh yeah maybe I can get this sound if I do this.

What he loses by only playing 5/12ths he’s got covered by envelope followers.

The only thing working in this video is a vintage ARP 2600. SMH.

No disrespect... but, so many missed opportunities to make the 2600 shine and understandable for non tekkies, imho.

This is a good demo for his baked friends at his basement but not at Red Bull Music Academy.

Man... this guy is a really disorganized & fumbly presenter. I didn't find this useful at all. I'm sure he knows, it's not a complicated concept... but he explained ADSR incorrectly. A lot of filler phrases & ambiguous "this guy" type stuff. Seems nervous. I called it quits after 12:30

i watched parts of it, but i like that he demoed ways of doing FM with filters and interfacing with external gear. Ill watch the whole thing sometime, but he isn't talking about the basics of analog synthesis i n a tedious way like other videos.

Plenty Wault Officiell May I ask you why? I had a chance to buy either in the early 70s and chose the 2600, both are good but the 2600 has more options. I suspect you really haven't played both, believe me the 2600 with the 3620 kybd is amazing, 40 yrs. later it's still a love affair😉 Check out my first video to hear some of it's diversity.

On the original album, from '76, he only used a 2600, the grey face with the Moog filter, that's all he had money for. Also, the 2 EMS synths and the RMI HS. Not sure he even owned the Eminent at the time of recording. He got the 2500 much later on, and also used it on the Oxygene tours.

Is he going to try to sell other shit or knowledge on the 2600?

You're probably one of those people that would buy a Korg Kronos and then complain about it because it has too much technology and you don't understand it and then talk about how back in your day synths were easier to use. Now you're bashing newer musicians for using old gear and keeping OLD GEAR alive that could have been lost forgotten and replaced. Know it all old farts like you don't understand that the only reason this gear is relevant is because young people are buying them. So much so that manufacturers are even re-releasing new reissues of the same old synths. Old farts like you aren't helping or buying new gear. You just jabber on about yesteryear and complain about anyone you see using some gear you used back when you still had hair. You sound like you're bitter that no one asked you to do some masterclass. Truth is these instruments are complex and it's hard to explain to random people that don't even know what it is and make it interesting. Explaining how they work is electrical engineering. Also the skill of using a mono synth isn't in playing a keyboard it's in knowing how to get the sounds out of it. You only get 1 note or 2 notes at best on a duo. These kids today are HEAVY into synths and synths are much cheaper than they were in the 70's and 80's. These kids would run circles around those old artists of your era because they have grown up using synths. While your still mesmerized by VCO's and what not. Perhaps you browse around on youtube and checkout some of the things these millennials are doing with these old classics before running your A-ARP old fart mouth.

Is anyone else counting just how many times this annoying guy says "cool"?

I feel sorry for anyone in that room condemned to listen to this guy. God, what a horrible presentation.
