弘仁年間弘法大師空海によって勧請されたと伝えられ、江戸時代中期には別当である金蔵院によって巨石の上に石宮、 後に弁財天像（現在も金蔵院弁財天堂に祀られる）が造立されました。江戸時代の祭典の際には、弁財天を運び祭礼を行っていましたが、明治維新の神仏分離により、 厳島神社となり平成元年新たに弁財天を造立しました。
鎮座している名草巨石群は国指定の天然記念物です。

It is said to have been prayed to by Kobo Daishi Kukai during the Konin era, and in the mid-Edo period, a stone shrine was built on top of the huge stone by Kinzoin, a chief minister, and later a statue of Benzaiten (which is still enshrined at Kinzoin Benzaiten Hall). Benzaiten was carried during festivals during the Edo period, but due to the separation of Shinto and Buddhism during the Meiji Restoration, it became Itsukushima Shrine, and a new Benzaiten was built in 1989.
The "famous grass megaliths" that are enshrined there are nationally designated natural monuments.
