This video was really useful. I have a companion razor that I bought because I thought the rounded protected edges looked more beginner friendly; but while it is really good on the side of my face it's really hard to shave the neck without razor burn. I assumed the head was functionally identical to the R89 head (besides the corners) so I assumed there would be no point in buying a R89 head. So before I found this video I was considering trying an open comb to se if it's any better. But now I've ordered both a Vivo in plum wood (which has the R89 head) and a replacement R41 open comb head too so I can try both.

@@Double-Y I have ADHD so of course I don't have patience for changing one variable at a time 😅 So I of course immediately tried a new pre-shave from Proraso and I tried the open comb first because it didn't look that much more scary than the Companion. But since I was impatient I tried that the day after I shaved with the companion and I still had some razor burns on my neck which really didn't feel good with any of the heads. So my first impression is rather useless. But I then let my skin rest for a day (or two, maybe?) and then tried again only with the r89 closed comb and it really is much easier to use on the face and neck; the blade seems much more protected on both the open comb and the closed comb compared to the companion. Since the companion is intended for body hair; I also tried the both the companion and the r89 on my chest to compare and here the companion works much better, the rounded more open guard on the companion glides better without grabbing the skin as much as the r89; haven't tried the open comb on my chest yet ( I'm not so hairy that I have huge areas to A/B-test on) but I assume that would work better than the r89 because the open comb is also more rounded and doesn't scrape off so much of the lather. I think I'll give my skin a break for about a week and then try the open comb when the all the irritated spots from the previous shave has subsided.

Oh, and the Vivo plum wood handle looks really nice... Although it's only about a cm shorter than the companion handle; it looks and feels much shorter because it's so much thicker. It feels nice in my hand but I think I need to get used to it, because I think I ended up holding it at a slightly wrong angle and sometimes unintentionally pressing it a bit too much the first time.

Thanks for the video. I have both, with the Muhle blades. I use the r89 with and across the grain and against the grain the companion. The companion gives just that bit more aggressiveness that makes it bb smooth. Only with the companion 2 or 3 nicks where I got bumps, the R89 no nicks what so ever. Looking for best of both worlds, do you have any suggestions?

Try the Rockwell 6C or 6S , they give you all the options. Or get an adjustable razor. Parker Variant comes to mind. Thank you for watching and good shaves to you, sir 👍🏾 💚 💜 ✌🏾

@@Double-Y It is somehow intriguing that the "Companion" is actually more aggressive. They advertise this as safer (it won't cut unless it is angled correctly) and milder ... for body and face... but hey: advertising is different than real world, usually.

I realy love companion.... It is NOT MILD A R89. I Cut myself 4 times on my 1st shave, but i love then blade feel. I also experiance rash with toobs much more then proraso+ proraso don't dryout my skin as toobs.

Out of the two, what would be best to use all around the body but also not irritating and safe for the skin?

I was struck by the companion for its modern design but I also fell in love with the r89, which one would you buy?

The two of them, but if you only want one, i would choose R89 if your of the sensitive skin type because is more forgiving, but if not i would go then for the Companion because is more versatile. Hope it can help you make the right choice. Thank you for watching and good shaves to you sir.

Don't really know, it's the black option they gave me on the site, i think it's the normal handle that comes with it. Good shaves to you sir.

Surprised from your review :(. After watched the video I bought r89 after тхе companion. On my skin: Companion - Aggressive. I can achieve good one pass shave. Smooth shave after 3 passes, even 2. I can't get without razor burns... - 3/5 R89(Grande) - Very Mild. I can NOT achieve good one pass shave. I need to make 4 passes for smooth shave - 3/5

Sad to hear that. It looks like your beard and skin won't get along with mild razors, then. Go for medium or even aggressive razors from now on. Have you tried slants?
