under rated? think not. besides the other two players in the band might have given you an argument. One of the best is still living, Ed King, who came up with the licks for Sweet Home Alabama

Allen Collins wrote the music to this when he was only 16...and the phrase "if I leave here tomorrow would you still remember me" came from Allen's wife who asked him that while they were driving in the car. Allen is one of the most underrated guitarists ever...actually, the talent of the entire band is underrated! And why Artemis' arms didn't fall off at the end! My fav...a southern girl from Florida! Saw them in Orlando (with several other bands) when I was about 10 with my older brother who passed last year. RIP to all of them that are gone. You need to show her Knebworth as well because you can see Allen playing better, & he does his solo longer!

I was at the last live performance in Greenville SC. I was friends with the drummer, Artimus Pyle, who was from Spartanburg SC. He survived the crash. Side note: Billy Powell, the piano player, was also a classically trained concert pianist who got interested in southern rock music. The other guys had no idea he played piano. He was acting as a "roadie" for the band when one day Gary and Allen (guitar players) were arguing about how to play a particular riff. Billy sat down at the piano and played it his way and Ronnie added him to the band on the spot.

That change-up from slow, and slightly melancholic to High Speed, high energy, Southern Rock is astounding. I first heard this in 1973 when it first came out, at 14 years old. My initial reaction, during the slower part was, "Eh, it's OK...". But then, "WOW". I was blown away, and became an instant Skynyrd fan.

Yes, the version of Freebird from 'One More From The Road' at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta was better. BUT, true story, the guitar work is overdubbed in the studio. There is a story in their biography about Allen Collins and Gary Rossington redoing their guitar work over and over to get it exactly right. Because there is NO video of that performance, we can't hear the raw version of the song.

If I remember right they were the opening band for the Rolling Stones, and they actually got more reaction from the crowd. I watched an interview and Allan Collins who did most of the solo at the end never had any formal training on the guitar. He is a self taught guitarist. It wasn't long after this show (October 22, 1977) was the fatal airplane crash. Took the lives of Ronnie VanZant (lead singer), Steve Gaines (guitarist) he did part of the ending solo with Alan Collins, and Steve Gaines sister Cassie Gaines (back up vocals). Sad day in the rock world.

In the days before Gatoraid, the reason the beer is sitting on the piano was because they drank it to keep their body temperatures down. He wasn't an alcoholic and it wasn't to get drunk. Even football players had beer given to them when the played. I just wanted to share that as there might be some young people out there who didn't know this.

Kinda eerie seeing him sing those lyrics about leaving tomorrow and being remembered knowing that he died only a couple of months after that performance.

I was actually at that concert with my brother...ditched our girlfriends for the day because we only had two tickets! I was 18 year's old at the time (just turned 62). It was part of the DAY ON THE GREEN CONCERT series held in the Oakland Coliseum. This was on July 4th weekend, and I was about about 50 feet out just left of center stage. What a blast we had at all those Day on the Green concerts back in the day--so many great bands! They all were put on by Bill Graham.

Love watching Kel's reaction and I am happy for you Rich for educating her on what she missed growing up. They is something I'd love to see both of your 'reactions' to Fleetwood Mac's live version of 'Rhiannon' , there are two of them, and very awesome. One is called Rhiannon live '76. , another one is from Midnight Special, Live.. Love to see you both react to one or the other.

My favorite song - period. Loved watching Kel & Rich - they have great personalities. Would have snorted my drink through my nose if I was drinking something when she said "Blow Me" LOL!! I'm a Boomer and was raising kids when Lynyrd Skynyrd came on the scene so I never got to see them live. Never got to see Jerry Lee Lewis either. Two great musical regrets in my life. I'll tune back in for more.

Duane Allman is credited for the concept of the Southern Rock genre of Music in the 70's. His solo on the cover of "Hey Jude" with Wilson Pickett in 1969 at The Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals AL. (with "The Swampers" session musicians mentioned in Sweet Home Alabama)was the beginning of Southern Rock. Clapton was amazed by it & wanted to know more about this guy called "Skydog Allman". The innovative Bird Tweet sounds at the very end of Derek and the Domino's "Layla" by Duane was his trademark. The Slide intro & bird tweets (at 6:01) of Free Bird are clearly Rossington's tribute to the Late Duane. The concept behind "Free Bird" title/ song is debatable but there is NO Denying the slide part of the song intro by Rossington is a Tribute to Duane.
