I was at this concert. My first live show. Hard to believe, but Lynyrd Skynyrd wasn't the headliner. It is as an all day event, The Outlaws opened up, then Santana, Skynyrd, and the top of the bill was Peter Frampton. I don't recall Frampton so much, but boy do I remember Skynyrd.

I have nothing against ZZ Top, but when Skynyrd closed with Freebird, the night of music was over for me and I left. More music to come after Freebird has been played? No....sorry....it just doesn't work that way.

So happy you're discovering Lynyrd Skynyrd! Always loved this. I know someone has probably mentioned this before, but there were two guitars playing off each other in this classic guitar duo. And they were playing fast, and in time with each other. Never seen anything like it since, and it's been 45 years. Skynyrd with the that lineup, including Alan Collins, Steve Gaines and Gary Rossington on lead guitar, Billy Powell on keyboards, Artimus Pyle on drums and Ronnie Van Zandt, the lead singer, songwriter and heart and soul of that band - they were special. We will never see their like again.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is THE quintessential Southern Rock band...but was tragically plagued by bad luck. Sadly, only two members of this lineup are still living today, slide guitarist Gary Rossington (who made the bird sounds on his guitar) and drummer Artimus Pyle. It was just a few weeks after this that the tragic plane crash happened that killed lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines (red pants) and Steve's sister, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (not seen in this video). That began a long run of tragedy for the band that included the deaths of pianist Billy Powell, guitarist Allen Collins (white shirt and pants) and bassist Leon Wilkerson, as well as a few others not seen in this video. As someone who was born in the 60s and grew up in the 70s, these guys were amongst my musical heroes.

There were plenty of people in the '70s and '80s (Dukes of Hazzard) that didn't know much about the Confederate Flag other than that it looked cool (it does) and was associated with the South. I remember seeing it all over the place and not thinking or knowing about its full historical context. A lot of people did just see it as an expression of "Southern Pride", and not a racist symbol of people so committed to black slavery that they rebelled against their country. But times change, and it's good to reevaluate things from time to time!

The first couple in the stadium shadows were slow dancing and they both looked totally romantic and into each other. The 2nd couple near the end, the blond girl before the first kiss seemed to be giving him a lecture and waved her hand and then it looked like he just moved in to steal a kiss which she returned but then she turned her head back rather fast to watch the great performance of the LS band. The 2nd time she again turned quickly toward the band. The 3rd time she stiff necked him because like any music lover she did not want to miss out on the finale of this once in a lifetime magical performance. I thought that he was being insensitive to her desire to watch the concert, it didn't appear he got several hints. And I hope the randy boor didn't get any after the concert. lol

So glad you took the time to go back and check out Skynyrd doing Freebird live from this show in Oakland in 77'. The studio version is terrific, but their live versions of Freebird were always epic and iconic!

Sadly, shortly after this concert (same year) their plane went down and we lost the lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines (the one in red pants) and his sister Cassie Gaines who was Steve’s sister and one of three backup singers.

Haha! I was at that concert just before I left the Navy. Started with Blue Oyster Cult, then these guys and ended with Peter Frampton. Had a buddy get some tickets for us (me, the wife and 3 other buddies stationed in Long Beach, Ca. at the time). He was in Hunter's Point in San Francisco. Great concert, then Chinatown for dinner. 😍🤗😉

I notice a lot of people looking kinda confused when they hear Gary Rossington using a glass slide on his guitar making the bird chirping sounds . Think about the name of the song is all you have to do . Freebird.... Long Live Skynyrd Nation 💜

Don't know what I loved more? Your reaction to this incredible performance or the way you pronounce Angus?! Anyway, glad to see you smile so much over this epic live version of one of the GOAT Rock songs ever produced!

YOU HAVE SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SOUL. I'll stop there b/c I could talk about your other beauties as well, but the 1st statement was what I really wanted to say.

What a perfect reaction to this classic. Polite attention to the beginning and the storyline from the lyrics...and then the anticipation... and then Magic Johnson-like, light-up-the-room-SMILE tells you all you need to know. Enveloped by the best guitar solo in rock-n-roll history, that kicks in big time, grabs ahold of you and will not let go.
