Lynton & Barnstaple Railway - September Steam Gala - 28/09/14

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I've said in the past that my first visit to the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway would be when 'Lyd' is visiting, and sure enough, just such an opportunity arose as I noticed the L&B were hosting a gala at the end of September, with 'Lyd' as the star guest. As well as the attraction of 'Lyd' (a new build based on the Manning Wardle designs which originally ran on the L&B before closure in 1935), three other locomotives could be seen operating during the event. 'Axe', a Kerr Stuart design, and the line's first operational steam locomotive as a heritage railway, returning to steam in 2008. During the gala she was used on brake van rides up and down the yard at Woody Bay Station, the line's main base of operations. Next up, 'Isaac', a Bagnall design, and sister locomotive to 'Gelert' on the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, she was delivered to the line in November 2013, and although she isn't an original L&B locomotive, she really does look the part on the L&B's set of heritage coaches. Finally, 'Charles Wytock', another Bagnall design, delivered to the line in the April of this year. Not being fitted with the proper braking equipment at the time (not sure if it was vacuum or air) her operations were very limited, running only up and down the platforms at Woody Bay Station, and running a member's special at the end of our visit, with 'Lyd' on the rear to work the brakes.
During the video we see shots of both 'Isaac' and 'Lyd' running up and down the mile long line, as well as shots of the two double headed. 'Axe' is also featured, running the brake van rides. To finish off we have two rather nice shots of 'Lyd' and 'Charles Wytock' top and tailing the end of the day members special, with quite a noisy performance up the 1 in 50 to Woody Bay.
A very enjoyable first visit to the L&B, my only slight grievance were the two individuals who thought it would be a brilliant idea to wear the loudest, brightest orange hoodies imaginable. You have to ask..."Why?".
Filmed on a Panasonic HS900 with a Pro Sound L92AA microphone.
Enjoy.

What beautiful countryside. Its easy to see why people loved this railway in its heyday. Lyd looks so at home.

I last went to the L&B railway about 7 years ago when I was about 10 and fell in love with it. Would love to go back again and see the line when it is fully restored.

Really excellent video...I see what you mean about the 'Tango' people !! I managed to get some in the final clip of my video, but they were fellow videographers i know. I take it you filmed this on The Saturday, i was there on The Sunday...would have been nice to have met you. The last clips with the Lyd/Charles Whytock 'top and tail' were superb.. Are you doing the WSR Autumn Gala? I will only be there on the Sunday due to work commitments.... Best wishes.....Steve.

A comment now a bit 'dated'..... this is another of your very fine video productions, THANK YOU!! RE: the 'Bright-Hoodie' jerks-- by now you and I both know that there are those 'Loonies' among us who wear such apparel intentionally simply to piss other people off! Little do they realize, their clothing also makes them excellent 'Targets', and there are several tactful methods which can be used to warn and/or discourage them (paint, tar & feathers, sticks, stones, & bricks, come to mind....). On occasion, on Heritage Railways, there are sometimes Railway Officers & Personnel who also unnecessarily 'OVERDO' the wearing of such bright apparel for 'Safety' purposes, using 'Ultimate Safety' as a largely 'unjustifiable excuse'..... an idea which can be easily abused & overreached!! IMHO on such Heritage Railways the required wearing of more subdued clothing should be the 'RULE'..... the only time such 'Brighter' apparel 'may be a necessity' is for those Personnel or Safety Staff other than the 'Operating Personnel', those persons who are physically working in the IMMEDIATE vicinity of the Lineside to enhance their visibilty..... AND EVEN THEN, a simple BRIGHT VEST worn over other clothing would adequately suffice in nearly all cases!! There..... from a retired Locomotive Driver & steam afficianado, and holding 'Awards' for Safety & Team Participation for over 62 years..... that's my 'Rant of the Day'!!

Are these replica locomotives or restorations. If the latter, what was the typical use for an engine this small?

I think that is about the worst collection of asthmatic whistles I've ever heard. If you don,t know how to make a decent whistle, visit an organ building works.
