In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 8 Topic 2 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 8 (1945-1980).
While the Vietnam War was raging across the sea, Lyndon Johnson set out to correct the ills of American society back home. His major effort to this end was a set of policies known as the Great Society, which was really just an extension of FDR's New Deal.
In order to combat the rampant poverty plaguing American cities, the Great Society implemented many potential cures like Medicare and Medicaid. Additionally, the Great Society sought to further curb the effects of racial discrimination.
The Supreme Court also got in on the fun during liberalism's golden age with a series of decisions that expanded the civil rights of Americans, including Baker v Carr, Engel v Vitale, Connecticut v Griswold, etc. In the end, the Great Society did not eradicate poverty from America, nor did it heal all of America's societal wounds.

In short, Liberalism reached its peak in the 1960s. Johnson's Great Society established things like Medicare (medical insurance for people over 65), Medicaid (Medical insurance for people in poverty conditions), and abolished Immigration quotas. The Warren Court, the Supreme Court under Earl Warren, had such cases as: -1962 Engel v Vitale (prayer banned in schools) -1962 Baker v Carr (redistricting made legal) -1963 Gideon v Wainwright (right to an attorney established) -1965 Griswald v Connecticut (right to access Birth control established).

my teacher still hasnt even taught unit 8 yet.. glad i started at the beginning of april... theirs no way hes gonna finish unit 8 and 9 on time before the test. thank you heimler!

Same here, the APUSH test is in a week and we still got a lot of stuff that we haven't learned yet 🥶
