Lyme Disease from Ticks - My Experience after a Tick Bite

Ticks and a tick bite -My Experience with Lyme Disease
Found out last week that I had Lyme disease after initially being diagnosed with muscle and nerve damage in my lower back. Hoping we have caught it early enough and now on a course of antibiotics. This is not a "how to" video but just MY experience and what symptoms I had . Hoping by sharing this that it may be useful to other people. Hoping and wanting a full recover post antibiotic treatment.

Your story puts a shiver down my spine Murray. I had Lymes 16 years ago and still suffer symptoms. It’s a horrible horrible disease. My main problem was a complete lack of awareness of Lymes by every doctor I saw and was told for months there was nothing wrong with me.

I contracted Lyme in 2015 and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I couldn't walk, couldn't lift my arm, couldn't sleep and I was in severe pain 24 hours a day. Lyme disease is horrendous! After a few weeks in hospital the doctor's told me that they couldn't do anything t help me and sent me home. What saved me was Buhner's protocol in his book 'Healing Lyme' as well as adding a few ideas of my own after devouring books on how the immune system works. When I told the doctors I was going to try and heal myself using herbs and a special diet they laughed. Well what else was I supposed to do? It was a very slow process because first you have to reboot your immune system and second you have to fight the bacteria of which actually hides from your immune system. What is different about the Lyme bacteria to other bacteria is that they feed on magnesium in your body whereas most bacteria eat iron. Without magnesium your muscles just can't work. Most antibiotics are made to protect reduce the ability of bacteria to eat the iron in your body - but not the magnesium - that is why normal antibiotics fail against Lyme (if you wait too long). I won't lie, it was the fight of my life and took about one year and a half to fully recover. Only when all the bacteria was gone could I then begin to build up my muscles again. Just to prove that today I am back to full health I play golf and am an eight handicap. Listen!!! - anyone who has Lyme - don't give up - your immune system can kill it. It takes a special diet, special herbs and sheer will power. If I ever contracted it again however, I don't think I could go through it a second time and would probably just end my life. That's how vicious it is. If anyone who is interested in hearing my full Lyme story - I made a video and posted it on my youtube space. It contains how I contracted the disease, how I defeated it and the consequences it had on my mental health. Take care out there everyone.

Hi Murray, I contracted Lyme Disease a few years ago. It wasn't diagnosed for about 6 months. It wiped me out for about a year, most days were OK, but some days I felt as though I had ME. The diagnosis was complicated as I had contracted Malaria in West Africa a few years previously and initially they thought is was another bout of it as the initial symptoms can be similar. Funnily, the drug to counteract Malaria is the same - doxycycline. Hope you make a speedy recovery, although you will have some bad days, but you've caught it early which is a good thing.

I contracted Lyme Disease about 4yrs ago, and had very similar symptoms to you ie burning/ pins and needles sensation in my shoulders and back, which spread to my arms, red bulls eye rash etc. Fortunately my doctor acted quickly and put me on the same antibiotics as you. I felt rough for about a month/6weeks, but I am now completely recovered with no further symptoms. The crucial thing in my experience is to get on antibiotics asap.

That is bad luck Murray I hope you make a full recovery soon. I think it is good that you have shared your experience because a lot of people are not aware of the signs. They can differ from person to person but if left untreated as im sure you know the disease can be very serious . This just reminded me I need to get a new tick remover I have had mine for a lot of years and it is in need of replacing. In my job I have seen many people suffer lyme disease and it is a very unpleasant condition . Horse fly bites can also be very serious and require immediate attention . Take care :D Teddy

Wow, Murray, all the best to you! I hope the antibiotics are doing what they’re supposed to. Lyme is such a strange disease - it has taken so long to be recognised as the threat that it is. Hi Murray, sorry to hear of tick / Lyme Disease problem and I wish you a very speedy recovery. Regarding ticks, the worst experience we ever had was in Ardnamurchan for a week. One of the dogs got 14 ticks over that period. We now treat them with Bravecto and have not notice any over the last couple of years. Apparently if they now get bitten the ticks die and fall off. We tick check the dogs after every major walk especially when we are away. Always conscious of the problem. Best wishes and thanks for sharing.

Lots of dog walker friend are mentioning they are finding ticks in the parks and gardens. So I will re-warn them and get them to look at their pets. When I worked as a gardener I used to do such checks on a regular basis as often we have to clear overgrown herbage and when being a tree surgeon. These days bites from spiders can be very nasty as well and can make bitten areas swell up quite badly. I hope you get better soon and thank you for your honesty.

Thanks for posting this video. Lyme is very topical just now, but I wish there was more on the subject on the popular outdoor & wild camping channels. I had never heard of Lyme Disease until recently. I had a weird large bullseye bite mark on my forearm about 6 weeks ago, but ignored it because it didn't bother me. It wasn't until a few weeks after, that I had some mosquito bites on my lower legs which caused major rash and swelling. I got myself to the GP & told him about the bullseye rash also. He advised that I take intensive antibiotics and Doxycycline also. I have actually experienced more symptoms since I completed the medication. It clearly affects people in many different ways. Hope you recover soon. My message to all folks who love the outdoors has to be "don't ignore the bullseye bite rash"

We used to use Frontline/Bayvantic earlier, but found it not quite as effective, especially on our Golden Retriever.

Really useful video, thanks for sharing. Treatment and acceptance of Lymes disease is superb nowadays, I live in Inverness and there are huge amounts of ticks about this year I’ve never known the dog to pick up so many in a season. My Dad had one last week couldn’t remove it easily so straight up to Raigmore Hospital they were brilliant, removed the tick and straight on a course of Doxycycline as a precaution. Found the Lifeventure tick remover to be the best, the little plastic jobbies just turn removal into a faff. All the best. Cheers.

Good video Murray, hope things have improved by now. By the way Frontline Plus for the dogs prevents fleas and ticks, I Wild Camp with two dogs on moorland, woods etc and so far had no issues with ticks on dogs. A natural remedy or something you can do to prevent bites before you go wild Camping is have a meal with natural fresh garlic in it, ticks hate garlic, something to do with your skin pours releasing the smell lol. Like you I had a tick bite but thankfully it never progressed to Lyme disease however the area of the bite still hasn't really healed even today, several years after the bite. Ticks have become a serious problem even in city parks and peoples own gardens this past twelve months, so basically no one is safe now. Atb Bill.

Thanks for this Murray. I did Wainwright's Coast to Coast three weeks ago. I bought a tick removal tool beforehand, never really thinking I'd use it. Sure enough, I took a tick of with it. I've had numbness, and pins n needles in my left thigh since finishing. I've put it down to some sort of repetitive strain injury from the walk, which it may be of course, but I'm off to the doctors tomorrow having watched this. Hope you continue to feel better, Cheers.

Get well soon, hope your feeling better. Thanks for putting up this video, very informative. I wouldn't have associated the back pain with Limes. I'd have just put it down to a heavy pack or something. :(

For some reason, this year seems to be exceptionally bad for ticks. Luckily our dog is short haired and we find them on her quickly. I know the hill you’re talking about near you that is always rife with them ‘K’ hill, my sister lives in the area and doesn’t walk her dog there during the summer. Hope you get better soon 👍

It can also be picked up in Elgin area, Millbuies to be more accurate. The ticks carry Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto...and other nasty bacteria. Stay safe, and I hope you are still improving. (I'm a little late to this post...sorry)

Hi Murray, just watched the video, gutted for you. However, I can't think of anybody more equipped to tackle such a challenge, albeit unwanted. Wishing you all the best for a full recovery. If it's any comfort, this video will undoubtedly inform and help a lot of people. I'm still amazed how little some of those who venture outdoors know about the disease and how to mitigate against it. ATB never seemed more appropriate. S

Thanks Stevie, glad I caught it when I did TBH, last few weeks haven't been very pleasant! Still popping a zillion pills but I can feel an improvement, albeit a slow one... BTW The hill mention in the vlog is Moncrieff, we tend to go out over the back and past the usual top, and I kid you not, I reckon I've picked up more ticks there than any other place! Just FYI in case you take the dog up there Take care ATB Murray

@@ScotlandsMountains Yeah Murray, I guessed it was Moncrieff. I have not had a problem myself up there but know plenty who have. Hope the side effects are not as bad as I've heard. Hopefully see you back on the hills soon....or over the reservoir with Lexi......It's not contagious, is it ? lol

At least your getting better now I’ve had a near miss with this I had a tic in my leg for about two days and saw a little black thing in my leg and knew it was a tick it was all red around but I didn’t feel sick or anything It’s a bummer that you didn’t get to the alps and that Easy Jet didn’t even give you a refund and personally I’ve had some bad experiences with my luggage being damaged and bottles being busted open they really just don’t care

Hope all goes well with the antibiotics, I spray all my hill gear (rucksacks & tents too) with Sawyer premium insect repellent with 0.5% permethrin & others, good for 6 washes & odourless.

I have icarydin spray against midges but left it at home as midge season really over (mid October). In future I’ll spray my legs anyway… Picked up my very first tick a week ago in north Wales after hiking through heather/wild camping. Spotted it three days later at home once it had become a bit fuller with my blood! Got it out with the removal tool, but must admit it would have been difficult to spot in the wild without bright light and access to a mirror. Waiting to see whether I develop symptoms… ! Thanks for your informative video.

really sorry to hear that, i hope you make a good a quick recovery. I agree that to anyone that wants to avoid ticks that permethrin which sprays on your clothes is amazing, its not a deterent, it kills them and they only need to touch the material its sprayed on, its absolutely lethal to them. Better than deterent. As you say though its lethal to cats too. But it is excellent.

Yeah but it’s surprising how quick they are I had one on my upper leg basically my thigh it managed to get in through my sucks the bugger sat there for two days and I had done a check but didn’t look at the back of my thigh. And I was only out walking in a woodland for about an hour and a bit so yeah I use the permethrin and it’s amazing at keeping them away brilliant stuff

Hope you have a full recovery and get back to your adventures soon. Ticks are a real worry here in Canada and when I come home from a hike I throw all my clothing that I wore that day into the dryer on high for 5 minutes as this is supposed to kill Ticks. I've spent a small fortune on repellants over the last few years, Permethrin has been banned in Canada, and hopefully they do the job. We didn't have to worry about these issues as much 20 years ago, just another indicator of climate change.

He’s describing what I went through for months before figuring out I had Lymes. Got it from a tick bite spring turkey hunting. I’ve never fully recovered I still have bouts of burning neck and back pain two years later. 4 weeks of doxycycline drastically helped but I think the nerve damage had already been done

Thanks Lezley, From what I've read the concentrations in the formula for human clothes is under 1%. The main issue arises wen dog treatments are sprayed nears cats (I understand the concentration is much higher in these treatments. I've sprayed already (away from any cat zones!) left to dry ad all the gear is now hidden away in m gear cupboard away from the cats ATB Murray

I picked up my first ever tick(that I know of)today, out kayaking on loch lomond, visiting the islands. I can't believe how many ticks I seen, I think this could be a bumper year for them. I managed to get the whole thing out, unfortunately not in a oner, fingers crossed

Sorry to hear that, good you started treatment when you did. My first two cases were ticks I picked up within the "city limits". My first case of Lyme's was classic, found the fully engorged tick when showering before work around noon on a Friday. Pulled it and brought it into the lab to check the mouth under the stereo microscope. By Sunday I had 103*F fever, a bulls eye rash and felt like I'd been hit by a truck. My second was insidious, I was living in a dark field stone house so I found the bite but it didn't look like a bulls eye and then I slowly went crazy over the next dozen or so days... Well crazier than usual for me. ;)
