Lyle Lovett-Friend Of The Devil
Музыка
We used 2 cameras and an empty Red Rocks Amphitheater for the background on the morning of June 20, 1991. Lyle Lovett recorded this song live for ABC's In Concert series honoring the Grateful Dead. I was setting up for a wide shot when Lyle asked me politely on the side if I could get his girlfriend into the picture. I thought this was very sweet and did the best I could to discreetly include her in the background. Within a few months of this video Lyle was dating Julia Roberts. I've wondered if these shots with his young girlfriend in them affected the situation.

I saw Lyle Lovett at the The Gorge Amphitheater in Washington state on August 12, 1995, 3 days after Garcia died. After Shawn Colvin's opening set, Lyle walked out alone and unannounced. He started playing this song and about half the crowd rose to their feet. A few people sang along, but most of us were weeping. When it was over he paused, bowed his head, and walked off without a word. No better better eulogy to anyone anywhere has ever been delivered.

+Bosco Hern That was a great eulogy, wish I had been there. Another amazing tribute to Garcia is Patchwork Quilt by Warren Haynes. Especailly live at Jones Beach, NY. Very very powerful and moving performance by another absolute sincere master.

+Bosco Hern My wife and I saw him a few days after that--same experience. Very moving. Shawn was great too.
Easily the most beautiful version of 'Friend of the Devil' I've ever heard. Thanks for sharing.
such an underrated talent. saw him open for Bonnie Raitt (another underrater) about ten years ago and it was amazing
A terrific cover by Lyle and his slimmed down group at Red Rocks which is a music venue like no other.
This guy is full of awesome little gems.
I love that this brings a different vibe to the song rather than being just a copy. One of my favourite Lyle Lovett performances. And the band is great too, love the cello.

This is on my list of "gems" on KZread and has been for years. Best GD cover ever.
Turn out the lights, light a candle set back and enjoy. Thanks Lyle.
Nicely done. Not over done, or underdone, perfect.

+LaughingatpainUSAway And yet thought provoking. I thnk Lyle means every single word he sings. He is an honest man.
What a wonderful place to perform. Very crisp, shows what Lyle & co. can do without any tricks. Super sweet mix. Thanks!
Lovely version...
Thanks so much for posting this. You captured the performance--my favored version of the song.
Very nice Mr. Lovett, I would love to tell you how much I do appreciate your music. I have live through so many bands. Love what I have heard from you.
I get choked up when I hear his version.
I've been learning this song (Lyle's version) the last three days, to add to my sets in Austin. It's my latest favorite obsession. (o:

+Raven101able Have you heard The Counting Crows version? It's great too. I like the covers better than the Dead's version although I realize Deadheads won't like to hear me say that.

I'm not really a Deadhead... I was more into Floyd... so I agree about the covers. I liked Jerry's songwriting and his style, and I like the Counting Crows version (it's better than the Dead original, for sure) but I'm in Austin... Lyle is a Houston kid. He's almost a local boy, by Texas standards. I've always liked his quirky style. And the story about the girl sitting in the back is endearing.

So good to see this on KZread again. Great interpretation of this GD song.
Lyall is always the front man but I love the way he is always generous to the musicians who play with him. Not often true of big stars.
First heard tjhis on Deadicated....Good stuff
one of my best friends from back in the day turned me on to this version of friend of the devil. i was just as impressed as he was by it. especially the guitar solo (which doesn't happen on this version but does on the album version. as the solo played out i said "wow" and he said "isn't that awesome". rusty was a wild man and life was a little to slow for him.he outran it and now he's not with us anymore. rest in peace brother. i miss you man. we had some good times man!!

I have the same story. My best friend and business partner died a few years ago. He turned me on to this version and it has been one of my favorite covers ever since. He was too big for this world, and i am poorer for his absence. I miss you Hammer.
Wow, what a song ...
best version don't know why don't analyse it . just the best
Play at 1.25x
Seen Lyle several times since I moved from Texas. Kind of ironic. Never saw him in Texas .He is at Red Rocks in this video . I have seen him there several times in CO . Have tickets to see him there this month. Highly recommend it.
Why does Lyle not tour outside America. Ireland awaits
Great video, Great song by a Great dude! Looking for the exact chords that he plays in this version of the song. I know there are versions of this song basically go D, G, D, G, A, G, A, G, A, etc no capo required. I see that he has his capo on the 3rd fret and I think the first chord appears to be an A chord. After that I'm not sure. Any help would be appreciated.

He has tuned the low string down a full step (which is a D without the capo). He has a capo on the third fret and is using a "D grip" which makes it an F chord (if you want to think that way, i.e. the musicians playing along have to be thinking F). That second chord is a "G grip with the drop tuning" which makes it a Bb chord. The capo thing makes it confusing to explain. Listen to the cello at the beginning, he plays a descending F major scale, they're playing in F. Regardless, great version.
I've got a wife in Chino babe and one in Cherokee....
& a lady in blue ...
Is this at red rocks? I played my 12 string there and some ppl came and thought there rwas a concert ahqahahhah

Very nice but adding the harmony parts would've been pleasing.....everyone likes to hear the human voice(s).....could've had James hum along eh.....??
great vocals and very warm tones to this song. too bad it kinds fucked it up. the whole "polished and sophisticated" route doesnt play here. c'mon guys, you're artists ... ya gotta use the right tool for the job. these textures dont fit the piece.
this is the most crappy version. Ministry is better!
