Lydia’s Story: FETO procedure for bilateral Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia

Like so many expecting parents, Amy and Joe went into their 20-week ultrasound with a mix of excitement and apprehension. They were overjoyed to find they were having a girl but also learned their daughter had a bilateral congenital diaphragmatic hernia, or bilateral CDH. An MRI showed her diaphragm had two holes so her stomach and liver were both high in the chest, and her lungs were compressed into two tiny slivers. They expected the worst and prepared for their little Lydia to live for only moments after birth. But the clinical care team at Texas Children’s Fetal Center® gave them hope with the innovative fetal surgery called fetal endoscopic tracheal occlusion, or FETO. Listen to learn more about their journey at Texas Children’s Fetal Center and how the Fetal Team saved their daughter’s live with this innovative fetal surgery. Visit texaschildrens.org/fetal for more information about Texas Children’s Fetal Center and the full continuum of care we provide.

Thank god for this surgery and saving the baby’s life. I have to get an MRI in two days. Because supposedly this is happening to my baby or it has possible situs inversus. I am 21 weeks. Also, I hope I can have this much support if that is the case. I am just praying with all my heart everything is ok 🙁but if not, that it can be fixed and my baby can be saved

My baby boy was born with bilateral congenital agenesis of the diaphragm. I hope one day there will be a cure for this too.

Hi, my baby also died two months ago because she was born with CDH. I can't go over it. Did the doctor tell you it's cause? A big hug for you. ❤️

I had a kitten (found as a stray) that have had something like this. No diaphragm could be seen on her x-ray, her abdominal organs had herniated into her chest cavity and her breathing was extremely labored. She died at vet.Terrible experience.
