LWRC SIX8-A5

Shooting and discussing the LWRC SIX8-A5.
I posted on Facebook a few days ago about how your comments advising me on the possibility of a loose battery cover prompted me to check it out. It wasn't very loose, but tightening it up fully seems to have taken care of the problem. I've tested it twice now, and it seems to be fine. The problem was the battery cover. Just as a courtesy, I emailed Aimpoint and let them know I made their red dot look bad when it was actually MY fault. Kind of a "Sorry about that," but in unedited videos, whatever happens, happens, whether it's MY brainlessness or a mechanical failure. Anyway, I've noticed that a lot of people usually see our videos, so I hate to make something look bad that is not "bad" at all; in fact, it's incredible and is my favorite red dot optic. :-)Paper Target on Ebay: www.ebay.com/itm/-/292155496368? ------------------------ Remember to check out our video clips on the Hickok45Clips channel: / @hickok45clips

+Carolina Tater Agreed, and to be honest, nothing they've ever developed was something I found worth the extra price. HK91? Nah, my M1A is a better gun. No doubt in my mind. HK93? Nope. I'll take an AR-15, please. MR556? Not a chance, I'll buy an LWRC at half the price, and get an American design that was...made in the U.S. If this didn't matter, nobody would think Russian AKs are the best, but they do. As for their pistols; same thing. If they were competitively priced, maybe. But, seeing as how they're several hundred more, for the same pistol, simply because it has "H&K" stamped on the side, no thanks. Plus, "Mister 556" is a dumb name.....

@Carolina Tater- LWRC Rifles are comparable to AK’s in reliability. I have never had a single problem or issue with my rifle. The Quality of LWRC RIFLES ARE “second to none” With that said, how much is your life and the lives of your family members worth?

The LWRCI Six8 is probably the most evolved option for the AR15 plateform : specific caliber, specific magazine, and specific rifle geometry. This would be the best M4 replacement option.

Purchased the LWRC IC-SPR 5.56 a few months ago and have been delighted with the quality, fit and finish, and sub MOA accuracy (with match ammo). The piston action does add a bit of additional weight and felt recoil but the action remains remarkably clean after many outings.

The 6.8 is seriously catching on for deer hunting as well. Especially since 556 is illegal to hunt with in many states. 6.8's energy is basically a fairly comparable replacement for 30-30, but it is a much better cartridge for longer range than the 30-30, and allows hunters to use their AR-15 rifles for both superior home defense and hunting. For size and weight, the 6.8spc is just about perfect for hunting deer.

I don't wana be a negative nanny, but 2600 with 120gr isn't realistic. What load is tossing a 120gr pill at 2600? That sounds extremely hot and a little out of the realm of possibility. I've blown through 9lbs of powder and 9 bullet types over the last 3 years and I've found in hand load testing for 6.8 out of an 18" and 120 grain pills are only capable of maybe 2400-2450 if you really press the envelope to dangerous levels. On a second note, the 30-30 really catches fire when you start loading the spitzer style high BC bullets in it, shoots like a whole different gun! (And literally does when you only have two shots lined up because of the spitzer style bullets lol)

  • @Condor1970

    @Condor1970

In my handloading, I have achieved a reliable 2550-2600fps with 115gr Nosler CC's using around 28.2gr of AA2200 and CCI-41's in an ARP 18" 5R barrel. If one was to achieve 2600 with a 120gr pill, then I think you would need to go to a 20" heavy marksman/hunting barrel, and push the powder up to about 28.6-28.8gr of AA2200. I have seen guys with load data do this reliably, but not without flattening the primers pretty good. You're pushing the envelope there (for hunting only), and it certainly would not be a standard loading for a military type of round in a Six8 rifle like the 16" LWRC. I have an old Savage Model 340 30-30, and I should try that with spitzers, since it is a bolt action. The 21" barrel would give it some gusto too.

Outstanding video on a great rifle and cartridge! Thanks for the effort! LWRC makes a fine AR rifle. I went out on a limb, sold a couple of my other firearms, and bought my own LWRC (an FDE IC-SPR with 14.7" barrel in 5.56) a few years ago and, with several thousands of rounds through it now, I'd be happy to buy it again. Except for being a bit muzzle heavy, I have absolutely no complaints with it as it has run 100% flawlessly for me.

I built my 6.8 SPC II with a 20 inch barrel from AR Performance. I load my cases with 28.5 gr of AA2200 going 2,784 fps with a 110 gr Hyd HPBT and I'm getting .5 moa. In the reloading manuals that only show the data for SPC you will see the max load for that bullet to be 2,400 fps that is the difference between SPC and SPC II chambers and 16 inches and 20 inches barrels. I hope you enjoy your six 8. If you try a Tubb flat wire buffer spring you can soften up your recoil a good bit.

  • @Aleckael

AA2200, phenomenal powder for 6.8, probably the best! I live in CA so nonlead is required for hunting, for my 18" barrel i load a 110 gr barnes TSX with 29 grains of AA2200, boy can you tell it's a hot load when you shoot it.........it's definitely pressing the envelope. I haven't chronograph it, but I'm guessing it's around 2700.... it does roughly 3 shot groups of 0.9 moa with that bullet. LOVES the hornady match rounds though, .4 MOA is easily achieved.

I wish more companies would make rifles chambered in 6.5 Grendel. With steel-cased ammo and Wolf Gold it's a far more economical alternative to 6.8 SPC. Supposedly the "niche" of the 6.8 SPC is in SBRs, but until they can get it to below 30 cents a round like steel cased 6.5 Grendel Wolf Ammo it's hard to justify the extra expense. One thing LWRC got right with their design is including an ambi bolt release. It's great, and I hope to see it on more future rifles. It seems to be catching on in more designs as well: the Polish MSBS has one, the new B&T APC 556 has one, the latest HK 416 has one and the 417 has a variant with one. Other high end AR companies like ADM, Cobalt Kinetics, and Primary Weapon Systems also have ambi bolt releases as well. Even if you're not left handed, being able to release the bolt with your index finger does make reloading a bit faster.

I have an 6.8 with an RRA 16 in upper on a Palmetto lower, Geissele SSA trigger and Magpul furniture. It's mid-length direct impingement gas system. The barrel is pretty chunky which bothered me a first until I learned that I could watch the hits through the scope at 4x at 100 yards. This makes for quick, accurate followups. It's been dead reliable. It uses steel wall mags, holding 28 rounds, although I shoot mostly with a 10 round mag. The 5.56 Magpuls bulge. I've been reloading 110gr Accubonds for it, but have some 95gr Barnes I'm going to try out pretty soon. This will be my primary whitetail rifle this year, but I will move to a 308 Kimber for Elk. That's a beautiful rifle. It's good to see you enjoying the round!

the best 6.8spc mags I've used, created for a standard ar multi cal lower, are PRI and Barrett. the PRI will let you do hotter loads since it accommodates a better OAL, newer barrels are amazing compared to when they first hit market, now its pretty well dialed in. the noveske mod 2 barrels accept amazing pressure loads. the best factory ammo was silver state armory but they got bought by nosler and dont make some of the specialized loads i like. i haven't started making my own loads yet cause i still have a good stock of the old SSA ammo.

An absolutely *fascinating* rifle Hickok!!! Many, many thanks for showing it to us! If only had the chance I would snap one of these up in a second--and I have never personally liked the AR15, preferring the SCAR16 if I wanted a milspec type rifle. Obviously the build-quality of this particular model shines through, but that 6.8mm round is also *very* intriguing. Previously I have been extremely impressed by the Blackout round. I wonder if you have any comment on a comparison between the two? Again, many thanks for showing this to us--watching the video has really made my Sunday!

Hickok, I'll take all that brass if your willing to part with it! This is the cartridge that got me started reloading. My 6.8 is one of my favorites, soft shooting and hard hitting. Great for the wife and kids, and great for me too! I built mine on a standard AR-15 lower. I can't remember(old age) which company made the mags I use, they're Stainless steel and they have all run flawlessly.

You guys have the best guns laws and rights. we are petitioning to get airsoft legalized over here but same bullshit from the government. Looks like an assault rifle, can be misleading to police to be a real firearm so a big stupid hell no from them. It's hard enough to get a license for a hunting rifle, u need to pass a license and be a member of a gun club before they consider you worthy of a air rifle (toy) which is also illegal without a gun license.

That's a really good looking rifle, I love the handguard and the spiral-fluted barrel along with the color. I have been thinking about adding a 6.8SPC or 6.5Grendel to my little lineup of AR's. I would prefer an all gas system over a piston driven one, that's just me but I wouldn't mind having a piston version to test out more often than what I have in the past with the AR platform. Hours of practice in the thousands likely along with duty fire under fire. I bet he is good with a .223 bench rest. He had to have been sniper trained early on in order to feel long targets like he does. I can shoot strings with a .22 round at 50 yards without direct sights 8 out of 10 by looking down the barrel at a 10 oclock position because I feel the target but this guy tops my best. Hats off ... .. ..

If I had to wager a guess it'd have to be converted into a full auto. Some ARs have a faux giggle switch just for that very reason. The conversion is not that hard but you have to have a license to manufacture full auto rifles before you can.

Celtic...as for manufacturing you're correct. However, a FFL dealer who's permitted to sell NFA items...can NOT sell Brand New Full or Select Auto's to civilians. A civilian can purchase as Used select/full auto only since circa 1986. Hence, why full auto's are so expensive. The FFL dealer is allowed to have full auto's for sale to govt. entities. Prior to 1986 a civilian could easily purchase a brand new full auto...which I did for 4 different times. You still had to form 1 the item with the ATF.

To me it's like having different barrels for a T/C Encore. At first it seems like a great thing. When you consider the cost of the barrel or in this case an upper and then you mount whatever optics you want, by the time you go through all of that you might as well just buy a whole new gun.
