9:30 The Plll was an effort by Rolls-Royce to enter the "V12" market in the late '30s as their venerable inline-6 engine was becoming "unfashionable" in a luxury market demanding more cylinders. Their new engine was an impressive piece of kit, but enormously expensive to produce - after the war, Rolls-Royce went back to the inline-6 and eventually offered a V-8. The V-12 didn't return as an option until the late 1990s - and THAT engine was a BMW production. Because the Plll was promoted as an all out luxury model in the late 30s, the bodywork tends to be a bit "heavy," both in a literal and metaphorical sense. These are REALLY big cars - even by the standards of the 1930s - typically pushing 2 1/2 to 3 tons curbweight. The coachwork rarely gives a sense of lightness or "sportiness" that one sees in some earlier Pll variants.

Despite the fact that today all brands, even the most traditional, have given in to the desire of the vulgar nouveau riche for these tacky SUVs, these really do not overshadow the true luxury cars that still transport people who have money and class and titles and surnames for many generations.

You are rightThey have a few nice cars all the same colour.They even have a green London Taxi with with the PEN registration on it which i spotted last weekend.But I didn’t film.

@@carspottingmrgold9378 Yes, all the vehicles are finished in the famous Peninsula green. They have two new Phantoms, four Bentaygas and three i7s. They also have an old Phantom from 1935 and old and new London Taxis. An epic fleet.

The RR Cullinan SUV, although it does great in sales, looks really poor. A Range Rover looks more... Rolls Roycy than the hapless Cullinan, esp the one in boring Gray you filmed.

So many cars whose indicators don't work. I am defo impoverished.

The Rolls Royce Phantom 3 @ 10:00 brings out the socialist in me. It's from 1937 and I can imagine the local factory worker at the roadside, tugging his forelock as the boss and his lady drive by en route to a maisons dinner gathering. Curiously modern-day Rolls don't have that effect on me at all. 🙂 Check out that car's " Flying Lady " mascot and compare it to a modern Rolls. It was a serious bit of kit back then unlike today's pathetic pigmy-sized models.

The Phantom 3 was absolutely stunning.It was parked there for some time because it had a flat battery.Eventually someone from the Hotel jumped started it.
