My tenth day in Albania pressed on as I continued my epic road trip from Korçë to Gjirokastër. Join me as I enjoy some luxurious Albanian food on a mountaintop in Gjirokastër, Albania!
🧳 BALKAN PEARLS TOUR OPERATOR: www.balkanpearls.com/
🚗 RENTAL CAR ALBANIA: / rentalcaralbania
My afternoon began on the road leading to Gjirokastër in southeastern Albania with my boy Erjan from Travel Media EU.
Gjirokastër is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that also includes the city of Berat, which I visited earlier in my trip. Both cities are known as rare examples of typical Ottoman architecture.
We passed lots of farmland on the way. Along the route is a freshwater spring and see a waterfall. I stuck my head under the running water. It was like ice!
Then, we arrived in Gjirokastër. We headed uphill past the Old Town, where I could see lots of Ottoman buildings. Finally, we arrived at Hotel Argjiro. The building dates back to 1891.
Inside the lobby, we were served some delicious gliko, and then we went to our rooms on the first floor. My room, 119, had a queen-sized bed, a TV, a couch, a table with coffee and water, a modern bathroom, and a terrace with a view!
Then, Erjan and I headed out to explore the Old Bazaar. It was cross-shaped with lots of souvenir shops. One of the shops has an old well in its floor! It’s 400 years old, 17 meters deep, and covered by glass.
Gjirokastër has a lot of artists and artisans, so there are tons of shops in town. From there, we drove through the new town. We drove up a steep hill until we were high above the city. What an incredible view! At the top is Kerculla Resort, where we’d have dinner.
There, you can get epic views from their two outdoor terraces. I met Sena from Kerculla Resort. There, we’d eat lots of local traditional dishes like lamb, soups, vegetables, and traditional pies. I started with some super strong raki and then headed to the kitchen!
Inside, they were making a soup with veal meatballs; a garden salad with two types of greens, parmesan cheese, cherry tomatoes, prosciutto, and a balsamic glaze; rice-and-herb fritters called qifqi; and pizza! The soup is made from corn flour and veal stock. I was told it would be the best meal I’ve had in Albania so far!
At our table, I started with the soup, which was thick and creamy with a bit of oil and paprika on top. The veal meatballs were herbal, slightly fried, and phenomenal! It was a nice combination of creamy, sweet, and salty! We toasted with some delicious house wine and then grabbed a bit of everything. We also had spinach pie, tomato pie, baked lamb, and a yogurt paste that was almost like a thick tzatziki. The lamb smelled insane!
The spinach pie contained onions and contained a nice dough. The rice-and-herb fritter was also tasty. It was dense and tasty, especially with the yogurt paste. The salad was refreshing and cleansed my palate! Next was a veal meatball with herbs, which was excellent with the yogurt. The byrek with red pepper, green pepper, and onion was unreal.
Then, we jumped on the lamb! It was double baked in an oven and then the forno. The skin, fat, juices, and meat, were all exceptional. It’s one of my favorite lamb dishes in the Balkans. It practically fell apart in my mouth!
For dessert, we moved to the outdoor terrace to have some oshaf, which is made with sheep milk and figs. We also had some raki as we listened to some live music! Next to it, we had some gliko. It was creamy, almost like a thick panna cotta or flan. What a meal!

Hi David. I hope you are reading this comment. I commented in your last video and I am commenting again. Firstly, Architecture is the representation of a civilization. Since Ottomans didn't have any civilization, it is illogical to call it "Ottoman Architecture". Moreover, in Central Asia, the origin of Turks, it is impossible to have a stone Architecture, since it is desert. I have lived in Turkey for 10 years, as a consequence I have a very rich background about Ottoman Empire. Secondly, stonemasonry was introduced as an Architectural style to Ottomans by Albanians. Even nowadays, in Turkey you can easily hear "Arnavut kaldirimi" which means Albanian stone pavement, sidewalk in Turkish. Turks themselves call the stonemasonry Albanian, but some ignorant (without information) Albanians call it Ottoman. So funny. As I mentioned in your last video, there is a place in Istanbul called Arnavutkoy, which means Albanian village, place where Albanian specialists of stonemasonry were placed and paid to work for Ottoman government. Thirdly, cities like Berat, Shkodra, Gjirokastra were built and had their own Albanian architecture and lifestyle before Ottomans come to Albanian living territories. Ottoman, better saying Middle Eastern cultural influence was inevitable and noone claims 100% cultural pureness, but it is NOT fair to call these cities Ottoman and give the attributes to Ottomans, who absolutely invested NOTHING in Albania.

Hi David, man we love your Albanian videos!!! Amazing! ❤️👐🏻🔥 🇦🇱🇺🇸 Also just wanted to mention the fact that your guide has misinformed you on some information on who build what, where and when, especially by whom. Lol Anyway brotha, just know that Albanians (Ilirians, Pelazgian) have been in these lands for ever, literally. Their own couture, architecture, you see all the castles in Albania, now think of all the castles in the neighboring countries. Not a coincidence. Albania was way bigger than what you see today. Anyway, history will reveal itself. You see it yourself though, you know what’s up, it feels different there, doesn’t it?the people, the food, the land ;) Enjoy it to the fullest and Thank you for sharing this magic with us. Much respect and love 👐🏻

The incorrect information that your guide gave you and your audience in regards to Albanian history and architecture it’s really frustrating to the point that is making hard to watch these vids. He gave credit to ottomans for buildings that were build by Albanians wayyyyy way before ottomans stepped foot in Albania. Shame on him he shouldn’t be a guide if he can’t do his job properly. There should be some kind of disclaimer in your vids that corrects the wrong information he gave you. I love your content and I respect your work and I think us as your viewers deserve true information and not defamation of the Albanian history and culture.

@davidsbeenhere everything was built by the Albanians themselves ,, the ottomans or the Turks just took the taxes ,, they did not build anything .. they are medieval Balkan houses ,, while the castle is older than the ottoman period, don't hear that guy, he is not a historian

Albania was an Ottoman province. It was called Rumely in the Turkish language. It was the Hungarians who stopped the Ottoman onslaught from taking over Europe. Just a factoid Dave.

Relax people , he is not saying that buildings are build by ottomans, even that can be right because back then Albanians were ottomans too. In their birth certificate was written -place of birth -Gjirokaster, ottoman empire. So when you say ottoman style you saying Albanian style too.Give Erjan a break , it's not his fault that nearly everything in Albania is build during ottoman time .

Hey David , i am sorry to correct you again the ottomans didn’t build anything in Albania besides mosques . Please get your information right this video goes worldwide and i know your a food channel but you also visit ancient plces in Albania and you also try to talk about history but it’s all wrong. Please please double check your information or just don’t mention any ancient history, will be best if you just present them without briefing on the history. You’re great , you’re doing a great job i can see you are very attached to Albania so please respect and inform your self before shooting. Erjoni in a lots of cases is given you the wrong information about the history or as he would say in Kosovo they also speak Albanian language. Wrong!!! In Kosovo are Albanians from Kosovo. I hope you’ll consider this comment please. Wish you a great future in your tv channel. Thank you for showing Albanian again

The only thing on these video is about food porn. Leave the story alone, don’t fuck it up. David’s been there and screwed it up... Come on guys you can’t describe all things giving wrong information about history, it’s not like this that you help tourism in places like Gjirokaster that truly deserve being visited by Thousands of hundred of people that have to have a graduation on Albanian story and not from persons who the only purpose is filling their stomaches with pies and lamb😜

Honestly I am asking is this guy really doing a travel video like he did in India or is it a propaganda sales kind video. I think the whole Albania is a paid up video with zero truth, he is a hungry person from USA who is using Europe to eat and earn and no truth in his video, drunkard, glutton and based on some previous video some lady in wait element also
