    Great video! I have one question does the fan setting only work for typical ceiling fans, or can it work for bathroom fans as well? In my house, the bathroom has one switch that turns on the light and the fan. We can’t just turn on one or the other. Could this work on separating the two, or would it still have to be linked? It’s really annoying always having the fan on when you only want the light. So I’m trying to find a solution!

  • @jimmynotch

    @jimmynotch

    3 жыл бұрын

    You can not use a dimmer or speed control on a typical bathroom fan. It will burn out the motor. There are bathroom fans on the market that are equipped with variable speed motors and usually the speed control is provided. You can however put the fan and it's integrated light (if it has one) on separate switches.... Because you have your bathroom light and fan on the same switch, you might be able to get a single pole dual switch (stacked switch) to separate them depending on how everything was wired initially. Worst case scenario would be that you sold have to run another romex to the switch box to get separated light/fan circuits.

  • @KylersStudio

    @KylersStudio

    I've been curious about this, but have never tested it. Wouldn't the bathroom fan just run as usual at the max setting on a dimmer or fan switch? It would be interesting to try it.

    Very Informative video, thank you.. That problem with the dim light in the bathroom is caused by something called leakage current that comes from the electronics in your dimmer switch. There is not enough current to turn on an incandescent bulb but there is enough current to turn on a very efficient LED bulb. Your suggested workaround is perfectly fine.

    Great video, very informative. My only complaint is that lutron does not have a fancontrol/light dimmer in one device with a remote as they did with their Maestro line.... and that has been discontinued. Many of Lutron's user friendly features have gone away in favor of redundant "features". If it wasnt for the fade on / fade off of their dimmers, I'd say not worth the money.

  • @KylersStudio

    That would be cool to have a fan integrated into the same control as the light. Even at double the cost of one switch, it could be convenient if you can figure out the wiring. It will be interesting to see if Lutron expands their line up or moves toward more premium feeling switches.

    That was very useful, thank you! If I install Hue RGB bulbs on a Lutron controlled switch, am I running into some conflicts to control the light? Would the Lutron app allow me to change the light color? Just wondering how Lutron and Hue would work together...

  • @KylersStudio

    @KylersStudio

    3 жыл бұрын

    I've thought about that. The Lutron app isn't designed to control color lights. They only control power level and automation surrounding that control. You can put hue light bulbs into lutron dimmers, but when the dimmer is off, the light doesn't function. It gives you an only if scenario where you can change the color only if the dimmer is on. I don't know yet how the bulb functions at partial power though. Might be overkill to have both installed. I like hue lights for all the lamp fixtures, but dimmers for any fixtures with fans or multiple lighbulbs to save money. Hope that helps.

    I have been using Caseta dimmers for over 5 years and it's been a hit and miss depending on what you're dimming. Caseta dimmers work but are limited by their outdated, analogue dimming circuitry which Lutron has been using for well over 30 years. It's old and inefficient technology that's very limited. Expect to loose about 12% of your supply voltage to the dimmer's antiquated technology. It was really noticeable back in the Halogen lighting days with Lutron's previous dimmer lines and still noticeable now with the Caseta line when you use higher end LED PAR20, PAR30 and PAR38 LEDs with a super high output and high CRI. What you see with a voltage meter at the e26 socket with the dimmer at full setting is around 103V to 106V on a 120V supply which ends up taking the edge off high performance LED lights and making them look average. If you are only using average, middle of the road LEDs and/or almost always dimming them, then it's no problem as you won't miss having 12% less light output at the top to begin with. How Lutron can call these 'smart light controls' when they are still using 30+ year old analogue dimming technology is beyond embarrassing. Why not go completely digital when the light sources these days are for the most part digital?

    Interesting insight. Other options are becoming more viable. But how many of those options work with any platform? I think in the next decade, there will be a more obvious best option and protocol, but as for now, it is still hit and miss with the technology. What system do you prefer?

    Mine works fine but was short on instructions. Install is brainless just treat it like a regular light switch. But pairing the remote to the switch there was zero instructions in the box telling how. I found a KZread video on pairing them which takes 10 seconds if you know the steps. 20 mins if you need a cell phone to KZread how to.

    It's cheaper if you have a chandelier full of lightbulbs and will never use color. It's nice having a good mix.
