He's always been in a category by himself, no competition. I think most R&B singers look up to him & would never want 2 compete with him. would you? I know I wouldn't

Yes, that is the great Lisa Fischer doing the high note in this song. Lisa, the most underrated female singer of her generation. During Luther's time there was no competitor. He was out there on an island by himself as the best male singer of his generation.

I have a favorite male, female and group/band. They are: Male -- Luther Vandross Female -- Chaka Khan Group -- Earth, Wind & Fire Luther could sing the ABCs and make it so melodic that you'd forget it was the ABCs.

Twon, I was born in 64. The music you're just discovering is literally the sound of my childhood. I can't pick one. I mean I watched the Jackson Five TV debut. No could complete with Luthfa and yes that was the way we said his name.😅😅 Cause he was the one and only. Peabo Bryson was close, or maybe James Ingram. Some even liked Freddie Jackson, but I thought he tried to hard to copy Luthfa. But the real issue is that our stars didn't have the machines to make their voices sound good. They had natural born talent. So no, I can't pick one. Sorry.❤❤❤❤

Be sure to watch his performance of the title cut on the 1988 grammys -- one of the great R&B performances I have ever seen. Remember, this is an incredibly hard song to sing live. Luther was bold. And while this may be his true "breakthrough album for good reason" a quick listen of the album that preceded it -- The night I fell in love, i feel, is the greatest R&B album ever written, produced, and performed by one artist. There is not question in my mind that this man is the greatest R&B artist of all time, with Marvin trailing in a very close runner up position.

Different voices so amazing - top picks with song examples: Paul Rodgers Free Spirit - All Right Now & w/Bad Company - Shooting Star), Alex Ligertwood (Santana's Marathon 1979 album - His voice is incredible - the music is incredible!), Steve Perry of course and no one can top Luther Vandross.

Answer to your first Question...It would have to be Luther Vandross.. Second Question...His 3 Main rivals were Teddy Pendegrass, Freddie Jackson and Alexander O'Neil..I remember when i bought that same 'particular Album' when it was released in the UK.

Listen I love Luther's Music... However the Idea of trying to select 1 Voice, not even separating Men and Women, Groups and different classification of types of music is IMPOSSIBLE!!!
