Luther really grew to be one of my favorite characters in season 2. Easily the most misunderstood characters who may had moments of being stubborn, rigid and a bit arrogant but was still deeply caring, loyal and protective. He deserves a peaceful, simple life outside of being a superhero. Thank you, I was hoping there was a legitimate, detailed and accurate of a character that truly deserved. * Also when Hazel strikes Vanya, Luther was the first to try to defend and later checks if Vanya is ok and when the chandelier falls, he tells Diego and Allison to get out of the way and he ends being one to be crushed by the giant chandelier.

It's so refreshing to hear a more nuanced take on the Umbrella Academy characters, especially Luther who's so shockingly misunderstood. Can't wait for the rest of your series!!

Congratulations on your literature degree, Claudia! 🎊🎓📚 I totally agree with your assessment on Luther. I've loved him since Season 1, as he's toiled so long and hard for Reginald, only for him to not appreciate his efforts. He was breaking down from this shocking revelation, and Series 2 did a stellar job at having him realise just what a terrible person their father really is, apologising for locking up Vanya, and maturely accepting that Allison was now remarried to Ray. ❣️ During the scene where Reggie publicly rejects Luther, I just wanted to give Luther ALL of the hugs, and to punch out Reggie. The Luther and Pogo parallels are simply fascinating. I hope that Season 3 will continue to show Luther's growth, as our Spaceboy clearly deserves better! 💪🚀♥️

I so adored the brilliantly in depth analysis you did on every single aspect of Luther!! This was such an interesting, thought-provoking, captivating video! Also, amazing work with all the images you created with quotes, lists of his features, etc, with the iconic 60s style s2 has and the fonts, that was all so very cool and added a lot to the video!! I usually put these kind of essay videos in the background as I draw or do smth else, but for this one, I couldn't take my eyes nor attention off the video!! So great job on that 💛! I'm so absolutely excited for ALL the next videos, I just can not wait and I'm just soooo bloody thrilled you're doing these, ah, I love it. brilliant work, thanks a lot!!

Oh my god, huge congratulations on your 1st Class degree! I studied Creative Writing and Literature too, and have always loved watching your videos, so well done, you must have worked incredibly hard while producing such incredible KZread videos! I've only just started watching the Umbrella Academy, binged the 1st season and now working through the 2nd. Got to say, as a child who was raised in an abusive household, the depiction of abuse and the effects it has on the Hargreeves kids is one of the most realistic depictions I've ever seen. I think that's why I enjoy watching it so much, because I've never felt more validated by a TV series, because you are left with these weird, chaotic relationships and have both intensely good and intensely bad memories. I think a big reason I got into the show was because I had a meeting with my siblings in January this year, where we discussed what it was like growing up and the abuse we all suffered, and it was so strange realising that my two siblings had really different experiences from me. We had all suffered but not suffered in the same way a lot of the time. So when I saw the Hargreeves siblings all meeting up and discussing what they went through, it really was like looking in a mirror, though obviously I don't have any superpowers on my end!

You have no idea how happy this video makes me. Umbrella academy is my favourite of all time tv show too. And my favourite thing on Earth is watching massive long video essays on media so thank you so much. I cannot wait for the rest and especially Diego. I’m so excited for you to pick apart all his weird actions lol Great video I can’t believe it’s free

I loved this and completely agree with you. I would love them to explore Luther's relationship with his body futher. The thing that his "ugliness" and physical strenght which is a big positive part of his identity come from the same source-his body. And how he deals with the fact that unlike all his other siblings he cannot quite pass as "normal" when not actively using his powers.Even though it makes sense for the plot I still think it's somewhat interesting that "he left me on the moon" is something he tells someone outside of the family, but faced with his father himsef it's the rage about his body that gives him the strenght to stand up to him.

Yeah, I wouldn't say he was ugly but deformed because of his awful parental figure.

Thank you for this thorough analysis. I've been researching dysfunctional family dynamics for quite some time and I've discovered that the kids are in 7 family roles that may be rotated a bit in a dysfunctional or abusive family household. Luther is actually in the role of the "Golden Child" or "Hero", Diego is most likely in the role of "The Rebel" or "Problem Child", Allison is actually very much the "Caregiver" which can sometimes be seen as the "Golden Child" or vice versa (probably why they bonded as kids and have a romantic element to their relationship), Klaus is the "Mascot" or "Clown" but can also be seen as the "Addict" though most of the kids have unhealthy addictions in some way he is most obvious with this. 5 is the "Mastermind", Ben is the "Invisible Child" or "Lost Child" and Vanya is the "Scapegoat". These roles can change depending on the kids healing process and also under the reign of a narcissistic parental figure (Reginald) life can be confusing when manipulations like projection, gas lighting and a whole host of other emotional abuse tactics are introduced. These tactics are confusing for many adults let alone kids that are just figuring out the world. Excellent video essay! I wish more people were speaking up about Luther, sadly people confuse his behavior as narcissistic because he's "aping" his "father's" behaviour as a survival strategy for living with Reginald. Kids all need love, safety and attention in order to thrive as a fully functioning human being. They didn't get any of that but Luther confused Reginald's praise as love and attention, which is why he is the most loyal to him. The other kids may have just accepted easier that their "Dad" was toxic but Luther had no idea Reginald does everything to soothe his own damaged ego and keeps close those that are loyal to him: Luther, Mom (codependent empath) and Pogo (Flying Monkey). Anyway, I can talk about this forever but yes, this was just a long-winded way of saying I look forward to more of your video essays.

this character analysis is absolutely brilliant!! you’ve made me realize what a complex character luther really is, and how much he’s truly grown throughout the two seasons. i see him in a completely different light now. whereas before i couldn’t relate to him at all, i now see that we actually have a lot in common! i can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the other siblings!

Wow, this is an amazing video. Luther is honestly one of my favorites and this is a perfect summary of why. One thing I would like to add, and see more of in the future, is how his powers work and are reflective of his character. Luther's super strength might seem bland or inconsistent, but I think its actually one of the most unique- because it isny based on rage or external stimuli, it's quite literally tied to his emotional state. At his physical weakest: he gets cut, knocked out, bloodied and bruised, and even shot. At his strongest, he can casually throw a man hundreds of feet, jump over 100 feet and tank an RPG without moving or getting hurt, break walls, and punch so hard that theres a shock wave. I dont think it's a coincidence that all of his weakest moments are when he was emotionally at his lowest and hated himself, and that when he was at his strongest: he was either more accepting of himself, or more confident and happier with his role (when he was a child). Luther honestly has one of the best arcs, even when he gives up being the leader, he still feels like the natural leader seeing as how he understands his whole team emotionally and tries to get them on the same page. I hope we can see him become the leader again, but now under his own terms, not his dads

Congratulations on your degree!!!!! This was perfect, thank you for making this Claudia. I didn't particularly like Luther, but I'm interested in childhood dynamics and realised that it's because he's the Golden Child - I was a scapegoat who eventually shifted to Golden Child thanks to a new sibling changing things up. Seeing the behaviours I criticise myself for shown in Luther made me not like him, but this really helped me appreciate his character more. He makes so much more sense to me now and I'm interested to rewatch it with this new perspective.

Obviously you're one of a kind, but the quality and writing in your videos is so great, I group you in my mind with youtubers like Lindsay Ellis, Marinashutup, philosophytube, innuendo studios, Riley Dennis, and Contrapoints. Dont ever feel pressured to post quickly because your fans understand that this is QUALITY ! Still, though!! I missed you like heck! The only thing that would make this umbrella academy series better is if you also had dan on to discuss your favorite moments. This is such a perfect sibling show, I'm making my siblings watch it too :) SO GLAD TO SEE YOU POP UP ON KZread!!

However, a small thing that I find a bit distracting is the (important) text on the screen while the audio goes on, so I often have to pause and read.
