Lures to Catch Spring Walleye From Shore

In this video, Lures to Catch Walleye From Shore, Hobie-Wan Kenobi goes over his Top 5 lures to consistently catch walleye from the shore. I do a lot of shore fishing for walleye in the spring and in the fall. Below is a write up of each lure and how I use them to catch walleye.
1. Jerkbait:
Stubborn walleye cannot resist a lure helplessly suspending in front of their faces. The jerkbait is a great lure for triggering both reaction strikes and stubborn bites. Jerkbaits can be worked very aggressive or mind-numbingly slow, whatever the fish are reacting to for that day. There are a wide variety of jerkbaits on the market. Floating are great for more aggressive bites. Suspending, my personal favorite, cast a little farther and are great for stubborn slow bites in early spring, mid summer or late fall. There are some sinking versions and those are usually good for semi-aggressive and deep fishing situations. Jerkbaits are great for fishing from shore in the spring and the fall.
2. Lipless Crankbait:
Lipless crankbaits cast very far and are my number one way to cover water from shore or from a boat when casting for walleye. The lipless crankbait can be fished anywhere from thick weeds in inland lakes to wide open clear waters of the Great Lakes. Most lipless crankbaits sink and are great for triggering reaction bites. Ripping through weeds using braided line is a great way to change things up for the walleye that are used to chasing trolling lures and live bait rigs.
3. Soft Swimbait:
Soft swimbaits are awesome for fishing weeds, stumps or other cover walleye are waiting in for an easy ambush. They cast pretty good and also trigger aggressive and passive fish into biting. When rigged weightless, hopping the swimbait along weedtops is a for sure way to get bit. Most trolling anglers will usually fish the outer edge of weedlines, leaving the entire weed patch for you to fish. When fished with a weedless jighead or Texas Rigged, you can get a lot of walleye in the deep weeds by going in after them. This is a great way I like to get walleye in hot mid-summer days.
4. Soft Jerkbait (Fluke)
Similar to a soft swimbait, the soft jerkbait is a slower, more finesse way to fish for walleye in cover. The slow twitch and fall are too much for a walleye to resist. They can be worked fast or slow and excel in clear or dirty water. Use a stiffer than usual rod to have the power to steer walleye out of cover and into your net.
5. Jig + Plastics:
The classic artificial lure combo of jig and grub flat out works. Although not as weedless are the soft swimbait or soft jerkbait, the jig can be fished in a wide variety of situations. Any depth, any size, the jig is great for finding fish as they usually cast pretty far and can cover shallow and deep water in the same cast.

I personally like the two hook jerkbaits as well but you should try a berkley cutter 90 once, in the cold I’ve outproduced the Kvd but in the spring when the water gets muddy they like the kvd more. The kvd just doesn’t produce enough slow action for me and I feel like I have to snap the crap out of one to get it to move.

Honestly if you test the suspend on most jerkbaits, the old 5$ husky jerk sits straighter than anything I’ve fished and no need to modify or remove hooks

My go-to lures for European Zander (similar to your Walleye) are Keitech Easy Shiner 4" and 4.5" with 7gr and 10gr Jigheads, but I also had good results using bigger 15-20 gr silver colored spoons retrieved slowly on the bottom.

My favorite lure in our small rip rap rivers in Iowa is a 1/16-1/4oz round ball long shank with a bronze hook. They mass produce them near me for cheap and I’m not out a ton of money if I lose some. The cheaper hooks will bend out on 6# mono. I run every kind of plastic on them but have found the cheap clear 4” ringworms can be bought like 25 for 5$ and I color them with dip n glo and then worm oil to soften them back up. I fish that in the snaggy runs then I fish 3.25-3.75 paddle tails on 1/8-5/16 northland rz jig in the current seams near big holes, dropping them back into the hole with current. Have caught a lot of nice fish doing this and plenty in the 23-27” range and almost always can pick a limit of eaters just about any time of year doing this.

Here on lake Erie in the past month and half water went for 47f at 30 feet to around 58f. I started with suspending jerkbaits where good, then to spoons. The size of the fish dropped off on spoons to little guys like none that where no more than 10 inches.

Hi Hobi-Wan....I remarked, that you took off the middle treble of the Rapala. Did you took it off in order to minimize the damage the fish could get? I fish a lot with jerkbaits for northern pike, most of them have 3 treble hooks as well. Although It often changes the action of the suspending ones in particular I do remove the middle treble hook to protect the pikes 👍
