Lure fishing for pike on a Birmingham Anglers Association stretch of the river Avon

With my heavy rod out of action I hit a new BAA stretch of the Avon that I’ve not fished before or visited for that matter with just Jigflies. Well, what a session it ended up being. Lots of action, crazy takes and a couple doubles chucked in. Fantastic day had and one happy chappy

Bigger fish tend to come to dead bait more often than too a lure. It’s not too cold to lure fish but in some venues you’d just need to slow down the retrieval rate as the fish may not be as lively. They won’t use up energy chasing super fast food. They prefer an easy target.

Steve - lovely pike - the slow mo of the takes are awesome! Had one the other week which, as you described, gave me a heart attack! Retrieved a Firetiger lure but it began feeling 'different' - normally, because it's attached to a leaf. Sure enough, as I got it to within 6 inches of the surface I could see the leaf, and began to swing the lure out.....water exploded as a 4lb jack launched itself at it! I struck out of reflex and landed her. But as you say, scary moments..!! As a predominantly lure angler, can you tell me where to obtain those jig flies? - I don't have Facebook but am willing to give my email address. They seem the business. Please let me know. Cheers Lee, as for the name? I’m a chap who lives in the Black Country who loves pike fishing. At the time no one had a name like it 👍 as for BAA waters, they have miles upon miles of pristine waters with fantastic opportunities of catching a variety of fish

Hey Steve, great vid mate. Buddy, an ask. Can you do a short vid on sexing pike. Many anglers who catch fish below ten pounds cant sex them, it's good to know what you're catching. Cheers mate, tight lines, stay safe Rich

Hello, I don’t give exact locations mate but the rivers im fishing is the middle river Severn and the river Avon. All places I’ve fished are Birmingham anglers Association waters and you’d need their yearly membership 👍

  • @BlackCountryPiker

Hiya, do you mean the fly? If so they are Jigflies so the weight is already on the hook. I prefer this to cheburashka weights on flies though that works too. For canals I use 5-8g Jigflies and for rivers 8-15g depending on the depth and flow speed 👍

Hi Chris, glad you enjoyed it 👍 my plan funnily enough was to try the next weir down on baa water as that’s where I’m led to believe the Zander start from. That said I’ve seen pictures of Zander not too far down stream of my last fish caught on a fly.
