Lure Fishing for Cod | First Session of the Year

My first first Lure fishing for cod session of 2023 saw bigger than expected swells, which normally turns the fish off, but the fishing turned out to be pretty good. Shame the weather didn't co-operate but then that's lure fishing in the winter in Scotland

That's the closest you can get to losing a net, without losing the net :) My daughter and I spent the last 5 days in a cottage near Castle Douglas but the weather was pretty awful so we hiked with the dog rather than risk fishing the rocks. Next time... I always carry a filled spare spool and an identical spare reel. I didn't used to do this, until my Penn Clash 2500 failed on a decent Pollock when I was several miles offshore on the Prowler. I swore I would never let that happen again, so I carry a spare spool AND reel, just in case. Medals and promotions for getting out - some nice fish for your trouble :)

The weather has been pretty awful over that way so good going getting out, despite the weather. Funny you should say that since only reel I've had fail has been a Penn. My Daiwa Bg Mag has never failed in 5 years and that's without being well maintained, saying that I always carry a spare loaded spool, just didn't bother unpacking it since the fish seemed closer in. All the best and tight lines👍🎣

Another great video. I admire your restraint that there is not one swear word despite the adversity faced. Nearly dropped your net in the tide, then broke it, numerous lost lures and losing all that braid. Rain and wind howling and no one “oh bugger” 😅.

Crikey, lure fishing is an expensive pastime! 😂 My best catch last year without a doubt, was me successfully managing to retrieve my new case of K2’s which had slipped out my unzipped lure/bumbag, whizzing out to see on an ebbing tide and offshore breeze! Rescued all thanks to some fortunate casting and the trusty Patch 125! Not much of a fight but I was over the moon 😂. I got those same vibes watching you save your net. Some lovely pale pollack. They looked like they were pale blue, which is not surprising given how cold it was. Cheers

Great vid as usual. Comment on studs in shoes: IMO They are great if the rocks are barnacled and/or knobbly and gnarly enough for the studs to key into, but I find them quite dangerous if the rock is that smooth igneous rock. The studs skate over the smooth rocks like ice, and for those rocks just good grippy soles with that elastic give to them seems better. Just depends on the area. Know our marks I suppose.

I've only fished with bait up there twice, one blank and one decent session. Water was clear and flat both times so don't have that much experience. Lures on the other hand, they'll work in most conditions. Most of the marks fish, but if it's flat then have a look on navionics for the deep water (tends to be on the golf course side). The canons is a popular mark on the caravan site side is tidal- only fishable for a couple of hours either side of low - but the golf course side is more accessible in that respect. Best tip for winter lure fishing is to fish as slow and close to the seabed and structure as possible. Hope this helps and you get amongst them

In all honesty, I just go fishing when I can. Some times it's good and others it's bad. But, a period of settled weather with a building tide period and fish on the ebb. The other thing is to keep moving, if one mark doesn't fish then don't think twice about moving to a different mark. Hope this helps

To make your lures weedless, if you thread a piece of rubber band ( around 1cm wide and 4cm long or as required) onto the hook before the hook is threaded through the soft plastic lure. The rubber band should be pushed up just under the hook eye. So then just get the other tail end of the rubber band and push the point of the hook into the end of the rubber band ( not the side of the rubber band but into the end) this will make a bridge across the mouth of the hook and when a fish hits it, the rubber band just falls away.. It should save losing a lot of lures.
