LUPUS UK Virtual Seminar - Lupus & Diet Q&A (PART 7) - Foods to Avoid

On 25/02/2021 LUPUS UK hosted a live virtual seminar about "Lupus and Diet" with guest presenters Prof Liz Jury, Dr George Robinson, Dr Anastasia Kalea, Dr Zia Knippenberg & Eleni Sotirakou.
You can watch the full seminar at www.lupusuk-virtual.org.uk
During the session, we received loads of questions submitted by delegates so an additional Q&A session was recorded. This series of videos covers as many of the topics as possible.

Although very difficult to get on board with Low FODMAP, the benefits of alleviating the risk of a flare up far outweigh the limitations on available foods. Finding out which of the mid to high FODMAPS are your personal triggers, then work out how you'll manage your menu. The way I explain it is like playing the card game Pontoon / Black Jack. You can get to 21 in the game by lots of small cards (low FODMAPS), a few non-picture cards (mid FODMAPS) or 1 Ace + 1 picture card (high FODMAPS). The moment you score over 21, you bust out of the game :) I'll have a day of low FODMAPS if I really want to spoil myself with some of my trigger foods, like a portion of ice cream, a pot of mushy peas or a slice of gluten-free cake. Unfortunately, onion and garlic instantly busts me out of the game and I suffer a flare up for a few days. In that instance, I make a choice not to eat those foods because I'd rather not put up with the side effects xxx

Ugh! I hate when guests smirk at a question. Professionals need to be sensitive to their response for those suffering from illnesses like Lupus. Just answer the question without judgment. Not all people are educated about diet and although the question may seem ridiculous to you, be sensitive to that they are asking because they are not getting the answers somewhere else. I haven’t had one doctor in my journey ask what I am eating.
