Lunar Lunacy: A Response to a Flat-Earther Video

Ғылым және технология

This is a response to two videos by MrThriveAndSurvive (links below). In the first of his two videos, he makes a peculiar assertion about the nature of the Earth's shadow on the Moon during a lunar eclipse. I commented, perhaps rudely, saying his viewpoint from the Sun was "pretty flawed". After I commented, he produced a "Part 2" video, apparently intended to clarify his point. That video only confused me further, however.
Realistically, I probably put way too much effort into this video because I doubt it will have more than a handful of interested viewers.
People who put their ideas out into a public forum such as KZread need to be open to criticism. Very often I come across videos such as the ones I'm responding to here where someone claims NASA or science or whatever is WRONG because of X, Y, Z. But when someone tries to point out what X, Y, and Z really mean, the person puts his fingers in his ears and says "No! No! No! I don't want to hear your sciencey talk! La-la-la-la-la!" It happens all the time with these Flat-Earth videos: People put unusual ideas out there and think that those ideas should be protected from criticism. It doesn't work that way though: If you don't want your ideas challenged, don't share them publicly. If you do share your ideas publicly, then SUCK IT UP and don't get bent out of shape and take it personally when those ideas are challenged.

Yes, the quality and the attitude of your pieces is what attracts me. Perhaps its because you dont have an attitude. I appreciate your whole demeaner as opposed to the assuredness' of the not critical enough, but so very sure of themselves FE proponents . All these FE and associated videos seem to reveal far more than whether things are how any of us think they are. I hear how people jump to conclusions, how some end their short analysis by falling into unjustified deprecating humor, or that their strictly hypothetical ideation is what they assume to be obvious, yet their analyses are so lacking in thought that they seem to actually only be a supposed obviousness, only a personal supposition which is based on the refusal to consider more elements in their analysis, so they, again, fall back into negative critisism coaxed as humor or they use unsubstantiated supposed detracting associations for proof of their analysis. It all seems to be the inability to consider broadly enough. Fear based oriented analysis being cribed by that fear vs non fear based orientationed analysis being free to consider deeply, broadly and as evidenced any and all possibilites. Huh ok I like your shows better than theirs. Theirs hurts my brain.

+SqueakerAlpha Thanks! :-D I was just over looking at some of your videos ... my diagrams here are kind of sloppy compared to yours. I was also having some difficulty with the volume oscillating wildly between narrated segments. I was going to go back and try to normalize the volume a bit, but then I figured "Oh fuck it ... nobody is going to watch this anyway!"

Excellent analysis. Well done. If only flat earthers would do their homework before they pull their pants down to show their asses by making the videos that they do. One bit of advice. You suggested that you watch the flat earth videos to see if they have anything that will make you think. Son, watching them for anything other than laughs is borderline flat earth thinking. They have nothing. Nothing at all. They do research that is entirely watching each others' ignorant videos. Please don't be so open minded that your brains fall out. This is one area where open mindedness is not only not required, it's simply wrong.

Its not the quantity of your viewers, its the quality. Mr Thriveandsurvive makes a living by getting money from his viewers and selling colloidal silver I believe as a health product. If he loses subscribers he might have to go back to a job.

+SqueakerAlpha +MrThriveAndSurvive He is kind of an interesting guy. He also puts a lot of time and effort into the balloon projects, which I think is fairly commendable. At the same time, he is not exactly receptive to constructive criticism, which is not so commendable.

+ZombieSymmetry it doesn't take as much time and effort as you think it does for the balloons. Elementary schools do it for cheaper, are more successful with their launches, and don't waste time trying to make up excuses when they fail. The guy is an absolute liar. He has been caught in multiple lies including his claims of being a meteorologist, geologist, and his made up email from a pilot that doesn't exist and that he never followed up with! His video where he showed "proof" of being a meteorologist was just a yearbook shot of him in the navy on a ship. The fact that he had never heard about coriolis force or a foucault pendulum before I mentioned it to him in one of his first flat earth videos speaks volumes. Especially since those things are so integral in the coursework and experimentation necessary to become an actual meteorologist. He has never addressed questions about his claim of being a geologist but its obvious he didnt do that either. Then in his most recent videos he claimed to have been in sales/marketing his entire adult life. He simply can't get his stories straight. Then he got caught with the supposed pilot email where the timeline didnt even come close to adding up properly and completely ignored other facts about flight navigation with concerns about how air pressure affects 'level' and how instruments work. The guy simply is intellectually dishonest and its clear that his only purpose is to make money from his youtube channel, donations, and his essential oils and colloidial silver sales. He is just another flat earth snake oil salesman looking to make money off the naive and gullible.

+Requiem4aDr3Am Eh ... I think it may be a little disingenuous to minimize the balloon launches and suggest that elementary schools do is comparable. I don't think elementary schools are really doing this sort of launch, and frankly if you put this sort of cameras and equipment on a balloon that is going to be reaching altitudes of ca. 100,000 feet, you really need to plan things and have a recovery team in place if you hope to get your balloon back. I think Mr. T&S is wrong about pretty much everything, but that doesn't necessarily mean he is insincere (and I can't read his mind). Does he stretch things a little, such as his meteorology credentials? Sure ... but a lot of people exaggerate. The thing is, if he sincerely believes what he says, then he isn't lying: He's just wrong. I don't want to be in the position of defending the guy because I think he, like all flat-Earthers, is a nut. At the same time, I try to veer away from personal attacks and I'm inclined to give them some credit for at least putting forth the effort (such as with the balloon launches) to discover things. Unfortunately, these are usually people who are interested only in discovering things that confirm their existing views and who will not see or simply ignore anything that challenges those views. In other words, the balloon launches can really only confirm for him that the Earth is flat. In the absence of objectivity, such efforts are in vain.

***** Well then perhaps he is lying to himself then. Elementary schools have a whole system in place to do these weather balloon tests for 500 bucks or less. I even linked him to the site for this when he first announced he was going to do a weather ballon but he ignored my advice. The only difference here is that Mr T and S decided to spend a buttload on the gps and a membership as well as 3-4X the amount on cameras. He didn't plan it out very well at all. Sure he is putting in some effort but if I had invested and donated to him for the balloon experiments I would be pretty pissed right now. He could have saved money using the same gps tracking systems that the elementary schools use and he could have saved a ton more on the cameras simply by buying a 360 fly camera which would have been better for the balloon due to lower weight. Those cameras also allow one to get every single angle and allow viewers to turn the view to anywhere they are curious to look. He simply didn't plan well and had a snowball effect of failure.

+Requiem4aDr3Am Oh, he is definitely lying to himself! The thing is, he is mostly just "preaching to the choir" and for the most part I probably am as well. People who have their minds made up that the Earth is flat will watch his videos for confirmation, and people who don't want to believe the Earth is flat will watch my videos for the same reason. This is never a good thing, in my opinion: People should seek to have their views and beliefs challenged, not confirmed. I figure that, since I produce videos that refute these flat-Earth beliefs, I automatically turn away 90% of flat-Earthers: The very people I would like to reach. If I'm unnecessarily antagonistic; if I'm mean and nasty and call them idiots -- all that is going to accomplish is to turn away the remaining 10% of the flat-Earthers. I don't want to just be preaching to the choir here, because what is the point in that?

Nothing against your videos, but I have to stop watching after about 4 minutes of too much unfiltered quotes of that dishonest flerf.
