In the summer of 1987, a fantastical fairground unlike any ever witnessed landed in Hamburg, Germany. Artist and curator André Heller invited over thirty renowned visionaries-including Salvador Dalí, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Sonia Delaunay-to design rides, games, and attractions into one extravaganza for all to enjoy.
Some called it a “fairground of sensations.” Others dubbed it “the museum of the future.” He named it Luna Luna.
Today, Luna Luna lives on-uniting amusement with the avant-garde to inspire the imagination in everyone.
Thirty-six years ago, Luna Luna landed in Hamburg, Germany: the world’s first art amusement park with rides, games, and attractions by visionary artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and David Hockney. By a twist of fate, the park’s treasures were soon sealed in 44 shipping containers and forgotten in Texas-until now.

I appreciated that visitors were allowed to traverse the pavilions that were there. I wish the rides were available, too but I understand the liability issues involved. We had the passes that required signing off on the risks involved in going into the pavilions. The artists involved all knew and understood that this was going to be the most interactive the public would ever be with their art and that wear and tear from that would be part of the process. Amazing how well it all survived!

yes the old footage of the first exhibit had people riding on the rides.
we went yesterday and it was a fantastic Art show. The video work on this is amazing and we hope we can go again

Keith Allen Haring was an American artist whose pop art emerged from the New York City graffiti subculture of the 1980s. His animated imagery has "become a widely recognized visual language".
