I have recently started to use ProRes RAW quite a lot with my Panasonic S5 since I can see all of the benefits that it provides to me and my workflow. Since there's not much out there on the editing workflow with ProRes RAW, I thought i'd make a video going through the process of both shooting and editing ProRes RAW when using the Panasonic S5, or any other Lumix Full Frame Body.
I also wanted to include some ProRes RAW footage that was shot with the Panasonic S5 so you guys could see the sort of quality it gives you, since I know that RAW video with the Lumix S5 is a bit of a 'give or take' for some people. Although I have already compared the internal codecs of the Lumix S5 to the ProRes RAW footage, I still do think that despite the larger file sizes, there's definitely a massive plus to shooting RAW when it makes a difference.
ProRes RAW is very easy to edit in Final Cut Pro X, however sometimes it can be confusing whether to use an SDR or HDR workflow. Of course, most of the time it'd be wise to use SDR since scree technology is still within the realms of SDR, although more and more phones and monitors are becoming HDR compatible.
I will be making a video on HDR workflow with ProRes RAW in the future, so if you're interested in that then keep an eye out!

    Great video. I do have a question about the how the process demonstrated may reduce dynamic range if I’m understanding how FCP works. In many NLE’s like Resolve if you use the system to color manage and convert colorspace and gamma on ingest it seems to me that your limiting yourself to whatever REC709 is capable of containing. Any adjustments you do down the chain can only move within the colorspace initially defined. Just like in resolve you would do your colorspace transform at the end of your node chain I would think your 709 technical LUT or conversion would be done at the last stage of your FCP grade stack and your exposure and color adjustments be done before things get crunched down to 709. I’d love to hear if I’m interpreting how FCP works incorrectly - maybe perhaps all the color wheel / curves / exposure adjustments still get calculated prior to the color space conversion on RAW import no matter what. I came for the Atomos / ProRes RAW breakdown and don’t own a LUMIX camera but I may import some footage from my Komodo or X-H2S tomorrow and see how the RGB parade responds to having the system manage color on ingest vs manually applying the technical LUT at the end of the chain in FCP.

    It's a shame there's no support for Prores RAW in Resolve. It's unfortunate we have to pick which external recorder we use based on the NLE we choose to work in. Having more choices is always better for consumers.

    I totally agree with you Izzie, it sucks massively. But at the same time, Da Vinci Codecs for Da Vinci software, and Apple Codecs for Apple software... It's just two companies trying to tie their users into their ecosystem, so it's understandable. I hope that a third part makes a plugin that allows for ProRes/BM RAW playback in all NLE's. That would be great!

    Panasonic has a special conversion lut on their site for prores raw to v-log. Just curious as that's how I usually go about my workflow. Or... did you just use the 709 conversion instead of Pansonic raw to log conversion? I'm kind of new to grading raw footage so sometimes I have trouble with which drop down box to add the raw to log conversion.

    Hi Josh, I have a question for you. Your great videos on the Lumix S5 have made me buy it. Mainly for filming. I like to film very much in Slomo. However, the setting of high frame rates is somehow different with Lumix than with Sony. With Sony, you just set the frame rate of, for example, 120fps and that's it. With Lumix, a framerate is also displayed in S&Q mode. There it says either 4K25fps, 4k50fps, Fhd25fps or Fhd50fps. Which one should I choose? When I first looked at the material, 50fps at 120fps seemed much smoother than 25fps in terms of Fhd. I didn't have to do anything else with the 50fps footage in Final Cut either, as it already looked great. But my goal is to shoot scenes with talking and drone videos in 25fps and the b-roll shots in 100-120 fps. Can I still set the 25fps at 120fps and then, on the other hand, have to do something else in Final Cut Pro at 50fps? I hope you understand what I mean. With kind regards Jimmy

  • @JoshCameron

    @JoshCameron

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Jimmy, thanks for your comment and for watching the videos! The S&Q mode on Panasonic cameras can be a little tricky to understand, but basically it's all FHD (1080p) past 60fps. The S&Q mode slows down the footage in camera to whatever you have set your framerate to - so if you select FHD 25p and then choose 100p in the S&Q setting, the video you record will essentially be 4x slow. If I were you, i'd stick with 25p in your record options, and then select either 100,120 or 150p for your B Roll. Hope this helps!

    Hi Josh, when do you apply NR? As we all know, RAW videos are noisy quite a bit. I purchased Neat NR just for this however even with my M1 Max 32c, it takes ages. So I'd like to know whether you apply NR before everything or before grading or after everything just before exporting. Also, what are your export settings for the best quality SDR? Can I export H.264 as 10bit with P3 colors?

  • @JoshCameron

    @JoshCameron

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey Sinan! That's a great question actually and something I should have covered this in the video. I didn't actually use any NR for the opening sequence, and I find that if you shoot at ISO 640 then there's not much noise present at all, even with RAW footage. However, if I shoot a scene indoors and need to push things a little more, then I tend to add NR right at the very end of the edit, even after the colouring. So it's a final step before export for me, and yes, it takes ages!

    Great video! I was wondering how you go about fixing lens distortion on your proresraw footage? I’ve just picked up an atomos ninja v with my panasonic s5 and did a quick edit in adobe premiere of some footage shot on a sigma 28-70 f2.8 but i don’t really know how fix the lens distortion without relying solely on my subjective interpretation. i understand there’s no automated fix to this issue comparable to how lightroom fixes lens distortion in .raw images? thanks!

  • @JoshCameron

    @JoshCameron

    Жыл бұрын

    Great question - I actually didn’t do any lens distortion correction in this video since there was nothing that looked too out of line to me. It all depends on the lens you use and how much distortion it gives you, but if I was editing raw footage from a lens that did have noticeable distortion (like a wide angle for example), then I’d try and fix manually using whatever native tools there are in the NLE and maybe put a thirds grid over the top so I can see roughly where things should be sitting :)

    @@JoshCameron That's fair, thanks! I tend not to push WB, ISO too much in grade. And even the internal codecs of Lumix hold up to some level of push and pull, so I think that should be fine. Thanks for taking the time to respond :)

  • @vaidehiarts

    @vaidehiarts

    Жыл бұрын

    @@lnuponom2678 That's true. But Prores HQ is generally a more robust and data-intensive codec, and in the case of the Lumix S5 and S1, offers more flexibility because of its compression v/s the internal Long-GOP codecs. In my basic understanding of quality, I would assume H264/H265 Long GOP < H264/H265 All-I < Prores HQ < Prores RAW / BRAW
