I landed at this airport in 1977. 45 years ago. It was all dirt. Nothing paved. There were only 3 buildings. None of the small city you see was present. There was 1 plane a day, at the most two. No reservations. When you were done with your trekking trip, you hiked back to Lukla and camped out hoping you could get on the next plane back to Kathmandu. When a plane was coming in, they would radio ahead. Then the one sole airport worker would go out of his shack and chase the cows off the runway. Looks like times have certainly changed!

This is the first vid of Lukla that I've seen where the camera pans around to show other views! Cool!

Simple video but so exciting to watch.

I work on a floating log camp and fly in and out of remote areas. I've flown, taken off of, and landed on water and land, in both float plane and propeller planes as well as Helicopters in remote areas like this. Some of the rides have been butt clenching as we fly in some severe weather as well. All in all, this is so cool to watch and to visit some pretty unique airports both pavement and dirt during my experiences in both Planes and Helicopters is quite the experience and also one of those once in a life time things and enjoy it very much.

Planes and Helicopters... interesting scene, they are like majestic animals of different species trying to live with a certain harmony in the same space.

J went there in 1992 ,no asphalt, only a dirt airstrip...very impressive and scary airport...

Definitely a busy little airport. Heathrow Airport in the Hills.

Lukla airfield is like a aircraft carrier on ground infact a bit difficult as on aircraft carrier there is a margin of error if the aircraft does not stop and it can go around for another attempt

This is what it takes to be a bold professional pilot to operate in and out of this I know a dangerous situation with terrain so you need to stay way ahead of your aircraft at all times from takeoff in case of engine failure

Yes ' We have places to go, people to see ' deliver and pick up packages, if you know what I mean and money to make for the organization. pilots take all the risk and are underpaid.

When I worked for UAL Express I met someone who was flying to Miami for a connection overseas trip that would eventually take them to this place 🙃. I never saw them again.

I have been there twice.

If the name of the Airport wasn't an obvious clue, this Airport is closest to Mount Everest. Everest is the SECOND Highest Peak in the world after K2. Ice on top of Everest meant that Altimeter Readings at the peak placed it higher than K2 but a few decades ago, Laser measurements placed K2 as the highest mountain. Trouble is, K2 is for Rock Climbers and Everest is for Hiking so... guess how many people objected? Guess what did/did not happen.

its too much busy in the morning only because there is too much wind in the afternoon. There is no flight after 9 or 10 AM

Love the way the helicopter is landing as the aeroplane is taking off.

This brought back childhood memories of seeing helicopters carrying dead bodies of soldiers from the war zone to the high remote villages during the Vietnam War.

This is one of the most dangerous airports in the world. So many crashes and so many deaths among fixed-wing aircraft. In fact fixed wing operators should refuse to operate from Lukla. Probably helicopters fare better.
