I play Luke Kelly for my Kurdish grandparents and uncles here in the north of Iraq. They can't get enough of it, and appreciate it even more as I translate what he's singing for them.

@@anthonywalsh7613 It is really more the raw nature of this kind of Irish music that resonates. It comes from the heart and are pure and unadulterated. I can play Kurdish folk songs for you from 100 years ago, and there are many similarities in the rawness and pure emphasis on tradition and authenticity.

This song was based on an a version sung by Norfolk farmworker Harry Cox, who you can hear singing it here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l5aJ1NyPksW8eco.html I included many versions of this song in my latest "Phonograph to Folk Revival" video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pK58m6qag7ebeqQ.html The series compares similar recordings of the same traditional songs by traditional singers and popular musicians. As a Polishman, I feel a spiritual kinship to the Irish, especially in the struggle for self-determination in face of invasions and subjugation, through the last century. I can't think of a singer who more powerfully embodies the Irish spirit than Kelly. And what a performer, exhorting the audience with his "Let's Hear Ya!"s. I've watched this more than other video on KZread, it really tugs at me. R.I.P. this legendary bard.

"Black Velvet Band") ... silly sod. btw. there is no such thing as "the English", we are not not all in the ruling classes or oppressors, and many of us are related to Irish people and others around the world. Dicky Herlambang It’s about a lad who’s out in the town of Belfast, a meets a pretty young maid (who has a black velvet band). He gets charmed and they walk for a bit before she nicks a pocketwatch from a passing gentleman and gives it to the lad. Next he’s in court for the theft of the pocketwatch, and ends up being sent to Australia on a prison ship. Sometimes, the young maid gets sent as well. The end of the song tells the moral: don’t get too taken by those young maids, beware before they get you drunk and doing stupid things. It’s more of a light warning or a fun tale then a sad song. Does that all make sense?

I remember the evening when Luke died (but he had been seriously ill for some time before that) I had just arrived home with my new car and was all excited but then they said on the radio that Luke Kelly had died and were playing his songs and talking about him on the radio for the rest of the night. So every time I hear Luke it makes me think about that evening and that car - a mint condition 1979 Fiat 128 3p with only 20,000 miles on the clock (for the car guys who might want to know)

My brother was born on St Patrick's Day,& religiously every year we've celebrated his extra special day by immersing ourselves in everything Irish,& this year will be the same,a plethora of Irish music in the air along with plenty of Guinness at hand, what more could a couple of Irish Rovers want!! 😉🍀☘️🎻🎵🎶🍻🍻

I've always loved music, when I was in my early teens I listened to Nirvana, Metallica and the Dubliners. Then Black Sabbath and the Dubliners. Later in my teens I turned to Death and Black Metal, during that time my favorites were Mayhem, Marduk, Bathory, and The Dubliners. When I finally got over that I found early american blues, so I listened to Robert Johnson, Son House etc, and The Dubliners. Gradually that turned into old american folk, like the Carter Family, Roscoe Holcomb, Dock Boggs etc. During this time I also listened to the Dubliners. I also listened to old Country like early Johnny Cash, Roy Acuff and also the Dubliners. Now 38 years old with life long passion for music Ive found beauty and quality in almost every genre, from peruvian mountain folkmusic to russian Hardbass. Imho the original Dubliners was the greatest band to ever exist. I continuously keep finding new layers of quality and passion in their music. 5 people, each one in a million somehow got together. So grateful. Thank you

The numbers in the end of that movie are still among my favorite Cajun recordings. Loved it ever since! Search for it here on YT if you havnt heard it! Never listened to mongolian metal though :) Will give it a go.

Haha Fantastic, I've loved many of the music genres/types you've mentioned here also and like you The Dubliners have always featured through all phases/discoveries but The Dubliners had a rare magic between the players that I've never experienced to the same extent since. Fair play Daniel Bergström hope they're still giving you as much as they continue to give me.

As an Irish descendant, I can't in words express the pride I hold for my heritage, and the many hardships my ancestors faced to traverse across the pond, to find a better life, only to discover false promises, Typhius, and sparse, barren land. I'd call Luke and the gang the very embodiment of Irish-hardiness and endurance throughout. R I P to these restless paddies, rovers, and rogues who sang their souls out for the world to hear, be it in jest, dread, or a bottle full of mountain dew, they danced the Ragman til they dropped; a life well lived.
