🎤 Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
You got a fast car
And I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Any place is better
Startin' from zero, got nothin' to lose
Maybe we'll make something
Me, myself, I got nothin' to prove
[Verse 2]
You got a fast car
And I got a plan to get us out of here
I've been workin' at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
Won't have to drive too far
Just across thе border and into the city
And you and I can both get jobs
Finally see what it mеans to be livin'
[Verse 3]
See, my old man's got a problem
He live in the bottle, that's the way it is
He said his body's too old for working
His body's too young to look like his
So Mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said, somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did
[Pre-Chorus]
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
Still gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way
[Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
[Verse 4]
You got a fast car
We go cruising and entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
So I work in the market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
And we'll move out of the shelter
Buy a bigger house, live in the suburbs
[Chorus]
Said I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
[Verse 5]
You got a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me would find it
I got no plans, I ain't goin' nowhere
Take your fast car and keep on driving
[Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
[Instrumental Break]
[Outro]
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
Still gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

@scottmeyers6296 it's not a karaoke it's a cover. Covers are meant to take old tunes and put a newer spin on them while keeping the essence of the old song. Karaoke is when they sing the song the exact way it used to be with no new tunes or accents. Plus idk why you're complaining when Luke has tons of other original songs to listen to, it's not like he's leaving you out to dry.

@@fireflame5296 a karaoke version is when a singer covers a song in the same manner it was originally recorded. He could have simply gone to a karaoke bar, requested this song, sang it as she sang it, and come up with this. I don’t listen to Luke. I mean the song at it's essence is about scarcity mindset and poverty and the toll it takes, and how it encourages the decay of family units and abandonment. This chaotic cycle does discriminate, it just discriminates due to poverty- the irony here being that no matter where they take the fast car the only place they can afford is another area racked by poverty. There are ghettoized areas that are both majority white and majority black in the US, but lets face it the black areas are directly next to areas of relative white wealth with no real reason for the boundary other than race. So to say that harsh life doesn't discriminate is a bit of a stretch, in that context.

This has got to be one of the realest, most hard-hitting songs I've ever heard. 2:58 to 3:18 shows how you just can spend you whole life running from something only for all those old hurts to one day catch up with you. It's subtle but the shift from "I know things will get better" to "I'd always hoped for better" - that shit hurts man. They say if you don't address your childhood traumas, your romantic relationships will and, in my opinion, no other song has encompassed that better than this one.

Not normally a fan of country music. But Luke Combs does a superb job with Tracy Chapman's classic. This song has always given me feelings, and Luke's version no less so.
Tracy Chapman wrote and performed this song. Luke is performing it exactly as she does

what's the point of a cover where the covering artist doesn't put their own spin on it?

Agreed. No creativity at all. Just a note for note rip off.

It's sped up, but he even kept the gender!
See my old mans got a problem When you fight in the war thats the way it is. His bodys all scarred and broken Yet He stilll does everything for us 3 kids. Love you dad! HOORAH!
Respect to him for staying true to the original, and not changing any of the lyrics.
I love how he didn't even change " work in the market as a checkout girl"

It’s weird that he did that. Maybe he’s wokey and identifies as a girl
This is an excellent cover, and that's saying a lot coming from me, since the original is one of my all-time favourite songs.
A timeless classic. I’ve been hearing a lot of people giving this artist flack for this cover. While I could imagine anyone ever covering this song. This one feels so sincere and made for the love of the art itself. Others have said it and I agree that I’m glad a whole new generation are being exposed to this wonderful music.
I swear every time I listen to this song just can’t help but get teary eyed and I don’t know why. This probably the best cover, love it !!!!!!
This is just a great song. It takes me back to when my late wife and I were in high school. hits me different now.

Yea makes me sad 😔 I get flash backs when i was younger and my mom and dad were younger 😢
Well played, Luke You stayed true to Tracy's reading, and did not give a shit about pronouns. Your reading brings tears, with every listen...
I love this take on the song. Although it's not really different in the approach, just hearing it from a male perspective gives it a whole different meaning. I think he did a great job.

Oh my gosh. Never really listened to this before. Sure I'd heard it but never really HEARD it. Beautiful and gut wrenching.
When I first heard this song at the beginning of the summer, I fell in love with it and it’s been stuck in my head every day. Luke Combs did an awesome job with this cover song❤️❤️❤️
Well written Tracy Chapman.
Beautiful rendition of Tracy Chapman mega hit. I can't stop hearing it...
I love the original, but Luke’s cover of this song gives me chills the entire time. His voice is so perfect for this song and his emotion comes through exquisitely. Thank you to both artists for this gift They’ve both given us.
I love this song
One of the few beautiful things that came from the lockdowns... Was watching when Luke did this on a live stream from his garage in 2020. Of course everyone went nuts over it and has been hounding him ever since to release an official version. FINALLY!!!
Honestly wasn't expecting to like this cover but genuinely kept it original and I can't deny it sounds damn good! This is how you remake a classic, way to go Luke!
I love this song I was listen to it when I had a MRI done on my left knee it's relaxing 😍
It’s not often that I like cover songs as much as the original, but this is WONDERFUL.
I love that Luke stayed true to the original ❤ I was distracted by all the background music. His voice is wonderful enough 😊
Nobody called Whitney Houston racist when she covered Dolly Parton's song "I will always love you". Nobody called The Beatles Racist when they covered Chuck Berry song "Roll Over Beethoven". Nobody called P Diddy racist when he remade the song from The Police "Every Breath you Take". Nobody called the Rolling Stones OR Van Halen racist when they covered Martha and the Vandellas. "Dancing in the Streets" But Today... EVERYTHING is racist to some people. We are going forward and the race hustlers are going backwards. Brilliant cover! And I'm not even a country fan. I don't think there is a person alive today over the age of 40 who doesn't know Tracy Chapman is. But the younger generation may not know that much about her. And this young country generation are now opened up to her incredible library of music. Plus, Tracy herself loves the fact that Luke Combs is doing so well with this version. She has stated that she is honored that her song is number 1 on the country charts. And she is getting a lot of money in royalties to boot. Screw you Race Hustlers! All music is for all people. Leave your hate at the auditorium door.
It’s a uniquely American classic and Combs hasn’t messed with the emotional core of it
A cover from one of the greatest songs ever. A song with so much meaning. Also the album where it originates from is a great album. It is my favorite album for many many years. Been a fan for this song since I heard it at Wembley '88.
Wow some songs don’t need tampering with and Luke you nailed it 👏👏👏👏👏
Chills. Thank you for this beautiful song Tracy. And thank you Luke for not changing a note.
One bad thing thing about this song is it ends....& yes im a black man luke you rocked it bro....
Surprised.. i never thought anyone could do that classic justice..luke nailed it
This song is so special! It just refuses to die every succeeding generation embraces it as its own.
Thank you Tracy for giving us this song, it speaks to a lot of people including me. Luke, thanks for bringing it to a new audience and another generation. Beautiful ❤
I’ve always believed that fast car is one of the deepest songs ever made. Absolutely love it
The days are long and the years are short folks. Don’t wait for tomorrow.
I loooove this song!!!!
This is a beautiful song. You can recognize things aren't right, make your plan for escape..but there you are looking at the same problems again
My close friend I met when I was 11 years old (im now 27) was shot & killed 2 months ago, this song was playing during his funeral as background music to the slideshow of his pictures. Everytime i hear it i break down
You can just feel the love in Luke's voice he has for Tracy's masterpiece. well done Tracy & Luke!
I am not even a big country fan but I am OBSESSED with this song and now I know who Tracy Chapman is too❤ love this song!!!!
Oh man I loved this song back in the day. He did a great job and glad it’s been introduced to a whole new audience to appreciate it.
Not a better person that could have covered a classic like this.
This song makes me feel alive, even sometimes life is hard... I'd wish to have someone to share a drive and this song!❤
This is one of Luke’s favorite songs. No way he was gonna change the lyrics and keep it simple
Great that he stuck to the spirit and essence of the song. A classic.
This is one of the best covers of a classic song I've heard in a while and I'm not a fan of Luke's regular music. But he did great here!
Never would’ve found Tracy’s original if I hadn’t heard this version first, and both of them pull my guts out to listen to. I left college just before covid, and I’ve been looking after my dad ever since, but he’s been in hospital for the past few weeks, and I’m so scared for him, but sometimes I look down the road and want to just disappear with the love of my life. I know it’s selfish, and I won’t, but the thought of just leaving, living and loving… it hits me.
