Luka Modric was the best footballer of 2018 - driving Real Madrid to Champions League glory and taking Croatia to an unprecedented World Cup 2018 final.
Goal visited Modric's childhood home and the hotel he fled to as a refugee in a Croatia ripped apart by war to find out how a kid from a mountain side farm in Modrici became a world-beating footballer.

Makedoncima samo pohvale na podrsci. Uvijek navijate za nas. U svijetu sam, ali ako naletim na nekog Makedonca i cuje da sam iz HR odmah mi prilazi i pruza ruku. Primjeti se da nas pratite u svim sportovima i da znate sve nase sportase.

Just to warn you guys who are not from Croatia or don't know who Zdravko Mamic is: Don't be fooled by his nice speaking during the interview and the honest image he tries to sell. That's probably one of the worst criminal the Balkan countries have ever faced (and you guess, that's also the reason Modric faced so much criticism at that time). Nevermind, nice documentary on Luka!

As a Croatian i have to say they portrayed Mamic in a wrong way...he is a THIEF..yes he helped Modric financially in his beggining but it wasnt tons of money he bought him cleets food and rented an apartment i guess...but Mamic took half of the 22.5 million € transfer ..which is 11 million..and modric got the the other half which is 11 million and Mamics son who was Modrics agent took half of Lukas splitted money so Luka eneded up with 5.5 million...from a transfer which he was all responsible afir no one else but him earned it by himself..and Mamic had a contract for which Luka had to give him a part of his earned money throughout his WHOLE CAREER

Just imagine for one sec, if Yougoslavia didn't get divided, the amazing national football team they would've had... The best in the world, by far. Btw I could say the same thing for handball, basketball, tennis ... This part of Europe is a real factory, making talented players in all sports. And i'm a french Handball player saying that.

Yugoslavian football team existed for 60 years and never accomplished anything at the world cups. Not even a single semifinal in 60 years. Croatia has 3rd and 2nd place in 20 years. Its was an artifical union of 6 republics which were divided by 3 religions and 6 nationalities. On top of that serbian domimance was present. All of those problems resembled in football and even tho they had good players on the paper they could never make a result because of those factors. Out of 23 players more than 11 had to be serbian, 5 croatian and the rest divided by Slovenia, BiH, Macedonia and Montenegro. Many great croatian and bosnian players couldnt play in Yugoslavian first 11 squad because serbian players had the advantage. There were many examples 1 is Jurica Jerkovic best Yugoslavian player scored a 170 goals in Hajduk Split and FC Zurich and he was out of first 11 yugoslavian squad because Crvena Zvezda player had to play. And invalid compared to Jerkovic.

Overrated. Maybe top 10 euro player but not the best in the world. Not even close. He did nothing special in world cup and got the mvp title. Many of his team mates played better.
