I remember just how heavily that dark and deep *"Nintendo."* sounded whenever younger me would boot up the game. Felt like a stone falling through your ribcage. Hits ya right above the stomach. And those little moments of light-hearted music, those little respites of refuge in the midst of all this absolute nightmarish stuff? Like, the familiar zoop-bwwhhhooaaaow-whaow-womp of E. Gadd's lab, which is the last thing you hear before you (willingly?!) gird those loins and go back into the nightmare. And the moment when you find Toad in the yard? Those moments hit even harder. I don't think I've ever quite felt a game that made you feel as horribly, horribly in danger as it did make you feel wonderfully, wonderfully safe. When I was little, I was SUCH a darned scaredy-cat when it came to purposefully watching or interacting with unnerving things or situations... but for some reason, this was one of my absolute favorite games to (attempt to) explore. I don't know if Luigi being so stinkin terrified in the game made it easier, or if it just made it more terribly immersive, or- you know what, probably both! All I know otherwise is that I'm pretty sure this game actually sparked some bravery in tiny me. The sort that grows into a big ol' hearty glow and carries on with ya forever. Not to put any shame on other And-The-Hero-Saves-The-Day genre video games, but here, we've got a hero that was scared and horrified throughout the ENTIRETY of his story. He didn't have any dazzling 'hey, I'm not afraid of ghosts anymore!' revelation, he didn't march out of accomplished doors all stoic and puffed up, and at no point did he make a show of how 'easy' or how much of a 'just another day on the job' sorta thing this was for him. But by stinkin high heavens, was he the hero. Didn't matter how much he trembled or how many times the same ghosts with the same faces popped down from the ceiling to scare the daylights out of him, didn't matter WHAT stinkin hellish thing possibly could've been around the corner. He persisted, terrified, and he won, and when all was said and done, he was probably still very, very terrified of what all just happened. (Heck, we've got another two games to prove it. Poor man.) I definitely wasn't thinking about this when I was little, of course. I just knew it was fun, and despite the fact it was scary, I liked it! Bizarre! Wonderful! But thinking about it NOW? When I'm almost a stinkin grown woman? The impact this game has had on me makes me want to cry, man. Thanks to a lot of crap this past handful of years, I've got way more than enough anxiety to deal with nowadays, but you know what? It's gonna be okay. Because even if I never have a 'hey, I'm not anxious about things anymore!' moment in life, that doesn't mean I'm not gonna win in the end. It's okay to be scared of the tiny things you're facing, and it's sure as heck okay to be scared of the big things you're facing. There'll come a time when you can do a little happy-dance and flash a peace sign at no-one in particular. You're not gonna be in the middle of a dark hallway forever... but for the times that you are? Keep going. You'll make it, darn it. You will. You've already come this far.

Also, I just- 36:12 (It's a whole lot sharper at 2:58, much closer to how I remember it aaalways feeling) How did they manage to get a song THAT close to the feeling of something dangerous getting closer and closer? I can STILL stinkin remember that deeply twisty gut feeling it first gave me! My stinkin WORD

@@k.e.l.2432 I'm a Spanish guy and Luigi's Mansion is one of my favorite GameCube games. I have felt TOTALLY identified when you have talked about the 'happy music' among all that murky music that was in the mansion. In fact, when I was little I thought about it, and I liked it, I felt safe. But then you had to take your soul with your teeth and go to advance in the game. A game, really. I have a lot of love for it, but at the same time, I'm scared because when I was little, this game was the one that made me afraid of the dark (for a while). I know it's been a few months, I don't know if you will answer, but I would be grateful if you read me. Greetings!

Luigi probably has PTSD, which is the reason why he's so scared of ghosts, because he knows that if he dies to a ghost, it's over, not just for him, but also for his beloved brother, Mario. And that would also mean the end of the Mushroom Kingdom, as King Boo would go on to conquer the whole world without anyone to fend him off. Luigi is thinking 20 steps into the future, where his actions will lead to consequences. He's not scared of ghosts; he's scared of the most terrifying thing anyone could imagine: the consequences of failure. One last thing, K.E.L.. Admitting and acknowledging when you were scared is one of the bravest things you can do. Those are the moments when you grow as a person, when your personality truly shows, and when you realize that fear can do good for the world. You are a courageous woman, and it is great to see somebody like that online. Thank you.

thank you for writing all this, very well said. Like, it's not a scary game now, but as a child it was as scary as something like resident evil is for us now. It is the perfect scary game at a young age, and oh my god the atmosphere and room designs are actually amazing. The attention to detail in each room is insane. The music is just amazing, the way the instrumentation and vibe changes from place to place, and Luigi humming the main tune, it becomes engrained in the brain. The sound design in general is awesome, the mix of dissonance and dark sounds, and lighter sounds to create the sense of safety. I remember a part of the game where you lose that safe place in the mansion, and the ghosts are everywhere and it's dark. I could not have beaten it without my friend. such good memories, even if it wasn't a big part of my childhood, i cherish it

@@domomcbeasty743 the real challenge is getting through all of the mario party and mario sports games. The developement cycle is a lot shorter for each one and every minigame and menu needs music so it doesn’t really sound like mario music, it just sounds like generic party music. There’s a few exceptions in each game, but not a lot. The other challenge is creating a way to listen to all the games. You can create a playlist, but Nintendo removes music so often that the playlist starts to deteriorate over time. On top of that, some games barely have any record of music in them. For a Dr. Mario game on the wii I just had to listen to an hour long gameplay video to make sure I got everything. If you’re going to do the challenge, I wish you luck!

I miss the humming! They need to bring back Luigi’s worried humming
The ghosts in the first game have a sort of vibe to them that just outshines the newer counterparts. They're creepy in the way maybe a classic cartoon character may be creepy: cartoon horror aesthetic. The ghosts in 2 & 3 have so much personality to them...but not these guys- they're blank slates. They have sharp teeth, are always smiling, and are certainly aggressive. They feel very much not of this world with an insect-like, hive-mind thought "Get the green man". They seem like they could cause serious harm without understanding the fragility of nature and life, itself. The ghosts are cold and lifeless- they feel truly threatening! This game's design is so good no matter where you look.
Thanks for posting this.

4 years evading Nintendos evil hand
Listening to this with headphones is very atmospheric and nice :)
I remember I wasnt able to pass the first level cause I was extramly scared yet i rember this game as one of the most memorable of my childhood.
Damn... listening to these fire tracks are bringing back some nostalgic memories!
I love the atmospere of this game! It's creepy and grim with haunting music.
First game I ever did speedruns of, still one of my favorite games to revisit
Game *Haunting* Level design *Spooky/Daunting* Goal *Pretty dark* Soundtrack *Perfection of all of the above* Training room *Smooth drum and bass jazziness 10/10 undoubtedly the best of the best music choice for a training montage*

Going to have to agree with this entire review 10/10 states all the above truths
Something LM2 and 3 really missed is a mild edginess. Like, the first game had an atmosphere that was actually somewhat dark with dare I say, a dash of spook. But the sequels were just fun mario games.

Wii plays GameCube games too if you have one.
That moment you realize Chauncey has a whole ass soundtrack for himself. Though what's funny is that the battle theme for him kinda has a Rugrats-esque feel to it if you listen to it a little more. He was the first ever Portrait Ghost to scare me as a child when I first played this game.
I love the “controls” music, so much variety!
THIS JUST AINT RIGHT! I need to hear "O-hahaha... LUIGI!" During Egads Lab track in the beginning!
Testing out my new bluetooth speaker's bass on this OST

Weird unique choice to test bass but Ight😂😂
Thanks I will put this for my party
This game makes my bones rattle just by the music alone. Add nostalgia from a childhood, and it sounds like the days you overcame your first battles that were so fun and challenging, that now feel creepy and vain, but chillingly lively and sweet!!
I love this game! Great to have the soundtrack.
Yay, a version with Totaka's Song~!

I would have to say that I think the ghosts were more memorable in the first and third on. The second one had a few different kinds of ghosts, but the ones in one and three had more personality.

There is no game after Luigi's mansion 3...

They had more personality bcuz unlike in 2 Nintendo wasn't afraid to make them dead humans for the most part
I love this so much, the only thing I miss is Luigi calling for Mario. I loved that little Easter egg and I constantly hum this song and randomly call mario like I did in the game.
hide.
Just finished playing LM3 and I couldn’t help but come back here for some good old memories :’)
I didn't know the theme that plays when E. Gadd calls you plays in the training music! :O
Music to listen to while catching ghost-work.
I am totally obsessed with the game played it once will play in 2 months
The greatest game of all time, so much to where I refuse to play the others I just want a remaster
my childhood. thank you.
THIS IS SO OP
E. Gadd's Lab is a song that sticks inside my head way more than I like to admit LMAO
Man I loved this game
my favorite thing in this game is the Orchestra room. love the musical instruments. Also the Observatory. seeing that in 3D on the Nintendo 3DS is worth it.
This soundtrack is pure nostalgia
Larger than I thought
my mom substitute teaches elementary students and they requested this during quiet reading time since it’s halloween and she liked it so much she emailed this link to me.
16:02 Is such a satisfying sound!
Surprised I searched the whole comments section and no one mentioned 49:46 "Talking with Ghosts" - Outside of the Main Theme this one is top notch.
Como me acuerdo que lo jugué cuando se lanzo en el 2001. Lo jugué en un K-Mart en El Paso Texas. Fue de los primeros juegos de la nueva generación.
47:15 that synth line god damn, throw a kick drum on the piano hits and a snare in there and youve got a lil tune goin
I still gotta play this, the soundtrack is cool af.
Luigi's mansion 2 and 3 actually make me mad because of how different those games are compared to this one...
This game was a bit too short, but about everything else about it was awesome. Music was no exception here!
Poetic
The training room song slaps! God damn! Also this is one of my favourite Gamecube games. To be honest, i don't like the second and third game, but man the first game is so good.
All the games are good in my opinion ngl, and yes even the arcade one.
Boos escape and Staff credits are SLEPT ON.
I didn't know that it he had different humming sounds?

He does! Luigi starts humming in a more frightened way the lower his health gets.
