I read in more recent years that its obscurity was due in part to how late it released, causing it to fly under many people's radar. However, I had a friend growing up who owned it, and considering how obscure the series seems to be, am eternally grateful to that happenstance. For I may have otherwise never really heard of it, and totally missed out on a masterpiece that truly feels like the culmination of the entire 16-bit era's RPGs.

​@@mikevos4460 When Square Enix remade the second game on the DS in 2010 it sold extremely poorly in Japan. FPS exclusive to the Xbox 360 sold better from what I remember reading. The only time this series got digitally distribution was the 3rd game on the 3DS Virtual Console.

FINALLY I FOUND IT AFTER SO LONG. This song was heavily featured in games made in RPG Maker users (95, XP, etc) especially around the 200s and it was a big part of my childhood. Leaving my RPG era after 2007, I forgot the original game this song was featured in (because I never played it) and I get frustrated by it whenever it plays inside my head. Long live RPG. My childhood life would be lesser than without it. ❤❤❤

So glad you got to find it! I've been on a 10+ year search for a song that was used in a Final Fantasy AMV in the mid 2000's on KZread, and wasn't even in English. So it brings me joy seeing that you got closure on such a long journey of finding this song :)

I love how this sounds like a real battle theme, it really conveys your character is fighting for their life even in a regular monster battle

Unfortunately, Lufia II WAS held to the standard of RPGs like Chrono Trigger, and players decided it didn't measure up. Which is a shame, because it actually has some great gameplay to go along with the bitchin soundtrack. The IP system with equipment skills alone made it worth consideration.

Best Battle theme ever. Simple, short, but so much on point. I remember me as a kid in my room. Angry at some other kids in school and starting lufia going into a battle and just let this music play.

@@CommanderTato Phantasy Star 4 also has one of the most Genesis soundtracks to ever be on the Genesis. That game really went hard with the console's unique sound, and did so brilliantly.

Then you haven't listened to the normal battle themes of Etrian Odyssey V, Personas 3-5, Trails from Zero/Azure, and Cold Steel I-IV, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and 3, Octopath Traveler, Bravely Default II, and Final Fantasy IX. Though Lufia II's battle theme is still one of the GOATs.

it's been 20 years since i played this game, and still love the theme

RIP Neverland Company. Now we'll never get a remake of Lufia 1.

@@seraphinw1 Yeah, it wasn't that great of a remake but at least it was some acknowledgement for Lufia. Too many awesome SNES RPGs have been doomed forever to obscurity because they weren't named Final Fantasy. I really want Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma remakes but the likelihood of that is pretty much zero even though we got an Actraiser remake and those games were all made by the same company, Quintet. Also for all of the Lufia 2 remakes flaws I did really like how even bigger of a knucklehead they made Dekar into. I lol'd when he offered his coat to Tia on that snowy mountain dungeon only to remember he'd forgotten he'd sewed his coat to his shirt so he could get dressed quicker in the morning.

Lufia 2's gameplay is unparalleled in RPG's. The puzzles were extremely intelligent and they were found everywhere. The "see the monster, can use item to stop them" is the best encounter system ever. The music is pure bliss and the characters are engaging and pretty deep for their time! I mean, who doesn't love Dekar or Aguro? Selan is the perfect wife (what other rpg make your hero have his wedding in the middle of the game? :P), and the love triangle with Tia is heart-breaking!

You could always grab a SNES Classic if you're against emulation. Although you would have to mod it to put Lufia 2 on there. That and the classic is essentially just an emulator with a fancy box and authentic controllers anyway.

I had this game. Sometimes id just leave it on to play the music all day.

The most underrated battle theme. Periodt.

@@TsukiStuffs Statistically? No. SMT 1's battle theme has a third as many views as this one. And it's not just that specific video, its nearly all of them. So, you're wrong. Also, the main reason SMT is more popular, is because the franchise is still ongoing. The reason no one talks about Lufia... is because Lufia is no longer mainstream. I mean, SMT isn't the most mainstream either, but either way, SMT statistically has the more underrated battle theme.

@@TsukiStuffs Nah. Persona is mainstream. SMT V? Maybe. But regular ass MegaTen? Not a chance. Could you even tell me any MegaTen game that isn't mainline? Or one that didn't release on the PS2? Because there's a lot of stuff.

OH MY GOD!!! *girly scream!!!* Lufia is by FAR my favorite series and Lufia 2 is my favorite game of all-time (I cry every single time I see the ending, even after 20+ times!!). And if it's on DS and in a similar 2d-style + gameplay style as Lufia 2, I'll be in complete heaven!!

There is a retelling of Lufia 2 on NDS, but it's an action dungeon crawler and they committed utter BLASPHEMY by making Artea into a gunner instead of a legendary swordsman.

@@TsukiStuffs I feel like that is an easy thing to say now, but I imagine a lot of the game's stigma comes from when it first came out. Many people who bought it on day one, without any idea of how much it changed, were likely very taken aback to see what had become of one of their childhood favorites. Likely resulting in it being judged harsher than it deserved.

One the best RPG from SNES era. Love so much ❤❤❤

NOW THATS A BATTLE THEME

As an aspiring game dev with an interest in breathing new life into dead/dormant franchises, Lufia/Estpolis Denki is definitely on my list. Will be fun navigating Japan's IP/copyright legal maze just to have a chance at that. Also also because I plan to move to Japan eventually, so I'd have to learn anyway lmao Also on my list are Eltale Monsters/Holy Magic Century/Quest 64 (its canceled sequel intrigues me), Breath of Fire, and Golden Sun.

Yes I remember being in High school and I couldn't take it out of my head. I even dare to play other RPGs if they didn't have awesome music as this one.

I really enjoyed this game playing it on an emulator back in the day. Too bad the game would crash once I recruited Guy and went with Tia and Maxim to that tower. RIP Lufia, you were a good one!

Does this on console too. That, and save files randomly corrupting and deleting themselves. This game was NOTORIOUS back in the day for being riddled with game-breaking bugs.

There were two glitches: 1. The ruined dungeon when you want to get the sword (but you can blindly walk and reach it) 2. One of the three towers, you can't go on with a cutscene and get an item at the top. But if you wander around, then you reach some element to go on. I have finished Lufia 2 and it's one of the best SNES jRPGs, with Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy IV in the row.

They should make a movie of the game Lufia. I think the story-line is very powerful.

zero11322 It's pretty childish though. Most of the dialogue is really aimed at 12 year olds. It could be a pokemon-like series. Every episode would be a place with a problem and a dungeon.

vincentpol You're actually right. At first I thought an anime or movie would be ideal, but it actually would be more repetitive than even the Pokemon anime lol. Pokemon is good though a lot of the episodes are too similar

Kenny Gates I kinda wish they actually made a much more deeper storyline and sequel for pokemon.. like Ash getting old and training his Son or something.. or Ash and Misty have kids and maybe their kids are the next pokemon masters.. always wanted something like that for pokemon. but never happend lol.

So poppy like bubble wrap

Been starting playing this one, and I admit it shows several mechanics to mix things up. On screen enemies in dungeons, puzzles that are not always straight-forward, thw gorgeous soundtrack, I only hope that eventually the story will kick-in. I'm against the first sinistral battle right now. Still it has what every game should have being fun.

I remember this coming out in a giant box in Europe, and it was even released in dutch. good times. I wished they brought it to virtual console for good times sake.

Id adore this with some fighting sounds such as guys axe blow or a magical spell and then maybe the phoenix sound.

This has got to be the most technical SNES theme I've ever heard. Listen to all the tiny details...

With all the graphics of today, I really love this game the most! I played the dutch version many times, and got all the powerfull weapons from the ancient cave or whatever it is called in english:P (oude grot). And defeated the egg drake and stuff... Long time ago but it is still in my memories:)

Lufia 2 is a direct sequal, it is an extremely awesome RPG which in my opinion blows all other rpgs for the SNES out of the water.

I want this game on my Switch, and I wannit now! Nintendo Classis Selection please!

I have/had this game but the battery backup doesn't/didn't work anymore. I've heard you can replace it but I'm not so sure I have the game anymore. A few years ago I moved & got rid of a lot of stuff I'd been holding onto for far too long & I fear this game might have been one of them. I hope hope hope I'm wrong. I'd like to one day replace the battery backup & play thru this game once more. It's been SO long. I'm fairly certain I thru away the Nintendo Power issues I had with the intel on this game's puzzles but with the invention of the internet in the years since, I'm sure if I get stuck I'd be okay.

Plus there's that code for Lufia 2 that gives you what lvl 99 characters at the start of the game? And some hidden monster fights you can only get to via hacking as well. Some giant white cloud/blob you can fight plus some dragon if I remember right. I got the nintendo DS game day one too. And it just sucked the battle system wasn't the same anymore. But at least they put in classic Lufia 1 & 2 battle musics and such.

Will there ever be a 3?

@tevlar The industry produces what the consumers demand. And today's consumers, for some reason, value fancy graphics more than anything else. Thus only very few companies, those who're not afraid of selling only very few copies, dare to make games the way that yesterday's consumers (we) enjoy it.

@YoshMasterTube i agree, i still play lufia 2 these days. Who needs OMG Graphics when you have this game?

@tevlar I don't think they've lost their touch, really. There are some really solid RPGs this generation. Yggdra Union (PSP) which is a remake of a GBA game, but with added features, is excellent. Then you've got Eternal Sonata on the PS3, which is awesome, with a very unique battle system and absolutely wonderful music. And on the action front, you've got Demons/Dark Souls which are both wonderful. On SRPG front you've got Disgaea which is incredible as well. :)

they release a remake of it for ds, but it's completely different, than lufia for supernintendo. Though I hope that this game will be released in Europe, too. This game is a part of my childhood, and it brings back memories of a wonderful time :) Sorry if anything in this three sentences is wrong :D

I remember being too young to be able to finish the fucking 100 level dungeon. A few years ago I tried to play it on a rom and I got my ass trolled hard by a glitch or something which made it nigh impossible to do the last (100th) level. FUCK YEAH, LUFIA!

Lufia's battle themes are a lot better than some of the ones from the FF series. Some of them.

This is my favourite RPG by far and for good reason. It really aged well, in all aspects.

Lufia 2 had the best story overall, even including the ones you listed. Chrono Trigger is a better game overall in my opinion, but the story of Lufia wins hands down. It's the only game that ever made me cry.

A good transition for this song would be final fantasy 5 - battle theme and would start at 0:42 :D
