I think the difference in speeds between the downward octave and upward octaves actually try to portray how a slow moving neutron (although it's around 10^5 meters/sec it's still slow on a subatomic scale) hits the first U-235 during fission and from then onwards an uncontrolled chain reactions starts happening at tremendous speeds (the released neutrons hit the conseuquent nuclei of U-235 at speeds of upto 10^9m/s). The first downward motion in the octave defines the slow moving initial neutron used for bombardment of the first nuclei. The fast moving upward motion of the octave represents the uncontrolled chain reaction that ensues.

@@ChronicMane9 "The music" as used in the movie refers more to an innate understanding/talent in a subject. Think about a talented artist such as Van Gogh, who ordinary people with little talent in art couldn't dream of replicating his work/understanding of that field. That goes hand-in-hand with Oppenheimer's "Can you hear the music?" at the beginning of the film. The physicist is asking him if he "gets it" referring to quantum physics.

For me personally, this song encapsulates the journey and feeling of learning something new, whether it be a new topic, hobby, skill, job or whatever. At first it begins slowly. You're new to whatever it is you're learning, beginning with that spark of interest. Then slowly but steadily, it begins to pick up speed, eventually reaching full throttle as what you're learning completely envelops your attention and focus. Along this whole process, you're learning more and more. Everything is flooding into your mind, the knowledge, the skills, the emotions, the desire to know more, to learn more. From what began as maybe a small interest, you are now completely driven towards accomplishing/learning. Eventually, it all comes to a head, every little piece you have picked up and placed along the way forming this one comprehensive and complete puzzle, like a painting you began now finally taking form into something beautiful and unique to you as an individual.
