The lyrics…just straight, simple, consequences. No interpretation, no resolution, no background, no moral. All we need is an unadorned description of what went down. And from that, we get the full picture and impact. Genius. God bless.
Absolutely my favorite country song. Even more than my old country heroes. Its profound. The excellent band makes it perfect. Im usually crying by " his momma believes in the pentacost ".
Her family were tight with a poet laureate. Its said he and Lucinda had their own relationship for a time. Here she doesn't sing about any of that. Instead she writes poignantly ofthe aftermath of his suicide and how it affected different people without interjecting herself more than superficially. Magnificent.
She always had such a good band, some serious players there.
Born and raised in Pineola, his mama believed in the Pentacost!
Great poet, Frank Stanford, "The Battlefield Where The Moon Says I Love You," died much too soon. But not forgotten. Thanks, Lucinda, for this tribute to your friend.

Only America makes these individuals.
Kenny Vaughn is one of my favorite guitarists to listen to........ he's in touch with tasteful most of the time........ very good feel for the song.......
Yep, that's about as good as it gets.
My nephew did the deed back on March 8, 2023. I feel that i've lived this song.
Good to find im not the only one who finds light in a dark one like this
Country music doesn't get more real than this.

I would not call it Country. It is Southern Gothic.

Two out of three firearm deaths in the US are suicides. White middle-aged rural men are vastly over-represented in that total. I wonder how many of them have their gun pried from their cold dead fingers.
My brother lost a son about that time and this brings it back like a painting, pain fixed in time.
The masterpiece painting with music
My God, Lucinda’s voice and a slide guitar

I talked to my nephews mom this morning… we reminsed 🎉what a beautiful human being he was!!!
A handful of dust; I just love all of this. Lucinda and the band at their greatest...
Greetings from Madrid, Spain, Lucinda, I like you music very much. It´s really great.
That BAND !
What a friggin ensemble. Then she starts belting this country dirge. I saw her with a 3 piece band couple of years ago. None of these fine gentlemen. The guitarist was a young buck who was exceptional.
"Dust to dust, ashes to ashes." NOBODY GETS OUT OF HERE ALIVE.
Hey Lucy you just made my list of immortal icons with that one
Me encanta. I love Lucinda´s music. She is great.
Flat out amazing...epic.
I can't stop listening to this rusty jewel
OMG this so good.

He sure as hell does.
Great song, great band.
That can’t be beat. Tied maybe, but never beaten.
Premier morceau du formidable concert de décembre 1998. Lucinda Williams est parfaite. Jim Lauderdale est la deuxième voix. Les deux guitaristes sont super. Déjà vingt ans, Lucinda avait 45 ans, elle était superbe !
Such a happy, joyous song.
searched for so long to hear this song never knew the name
God, this is something, and there is a link to the song Awakening only live
Guess I didn't realize that Jim Lauderdale had played with Lucinda. Cuzin Kenny Vaughan too

As real as it gets.
knockout, literate southern story-telling in the flannery o'connor tradition.
That nerd is really rocking out
I don't dig country typically but I love this!

Because this is Americana genre. Or Insurgent Country. Jason Isbell is in this genre too. So much great music. Go down that rabbit hole.

Suicide is a terrible terrible mistake; if anyone is in despair they should know that it WILL PASS. Suicide is forever.

Actually, despair might never pass. And the “forever” part is sometimes the most tempting thing about suicide. But the thing is, like this song illustrates, it doesn’t matter: we just can’t do it to the people who love us.
Anything, no matter how good the music she makes may be....it will always take back stage to this womens natural sensuality.

Hey CMA you've missed a few good ones. She belongs with the Masters
I fear that before these guitar players get the recognition they deserve, they'll just be two more van Goths. Why doesn't she have them with her!

There are three fantastic guitar players on that stage: Kenny Vaughan probably is best known but Jim Lauderdale on acoustic is no slouch. However, I think that’s John Jackson playing that awesome slide on the Strat. He also plays that electric mandolin guitar on other tracks.

I use this for Hey did artwqEd was what adequate I
This is a hauntingly beautiful story of loss. Lucinda is a treasure. Is that Jim Lauderdale playing the other acoustic guitar?
