Except at 26:20 when she delicately framed what Donahue was delicately asking about Desi cheating on her, and she turned it into a conversation about her giving things to goodwill. That was very savvy and elegantly done on her part. The public asking indelicate questions about your being cheated on is pretty humiliating. Well done, Lucille Ball. A real pro.

Lucy is so wonderful here. Before Mame's bad notices would crush her. I fell I should appologise for being someone who loved Mame and felt Lucy was perfect for it. And I should identify myself as someone who at that time had never seen Rosaland Russell in Auntie Mame. Who cares if Lucy was shot through gaze. Mame was never intended to be a young girl. if Lucy's singing voice was not perfect Mame herself would not care and get up and sing! Lucille Ball is so down to earth, humble, real with herself and others. Dispite her personal issues, solid as a rock and the best of Hollywood. I am moved everytime I fall upon Lucille Ball, the woman in clips. No one like her.

You make good points and I agree she was a trail-blazer for women running things and was way ahead of the pack. I saw Mame as a young person and loved it. I think she may have been too old for the role but have always enjoyed: the story, the humor, the music, the acting and yes, even Lucy. I don't agree it was a total failure. I think it isn't the best musical out there - but it often gets an unfair deal. It is essentially a remake of a beloved film (Auntie Mame) and many cannot get over the fact that Lucy and her team basically remade that movie. Also, many felt Angela Lansbury who starred in this musical on Broadway should have starred in the film as well. The studio however making the film would not cast Ms. Lansbury because she wasn't a big enough star then - and musicals at this time (1970s) were not really popular or making much money. They only agreed to make MAME into a musical film IF someone as BIG as Lucy would agree to star in it. I like the film and think it's good....not great, but good.

This was when a talk show was exactly that! Loved the audience questions. I noticed that this was 47 minutes long. Only 13 minutes of commercials on a hour show! Now, you 20 minutes of commercials in any hour show. I think Lucy owns whatever movie/show she stars in. I liked the other MAME with Rosalind Russell, but Lucy did a fine job.

Thats because there was very limited commercials then so shows could be longer. TV was like a quarter of a century old at this time, so still fairly new. Also, there were very few companies around to advertise their stuff. Now things have grown massively everyone needs their ad time so of course shows have gotten shorter to make room for all the companies we have now than back in 1974.

I was a bit put off by it mainly because of some scenarios of the production, just didn't fit her. Because what I had read about Lucille Ball, she had always wanted to be taken as a serious actress. Seeing as she was coming out that Lucy Ricardo characterization, perhaps she felt that the actual part was made for her. Of course, I certainly can't take that title " Queen of Comedy " away for her. As I grew aware of part of the movie " Mame ", I found it quite entertaining. Sure, there would still be the question pertain asking myself do want to see it again. Now I faced with answering that question, I must state my answer is no.

I remember watching this Phil show with Lucy as guest when I waited for my bus in 3rd grade. Phil was right, though. CBS let her save face but the weekly series was pretty much canceled. It went from top 10 to almost 30 the last season.

Actually, I have seen Mame 3 x and liked it better each time - from okay, to good, to very good. Also on first viewing did not appreciated Robert Preston - was I wrong - and did not enjoy the young man who played her nephew. Changed my mind on all counts.

She read so many scripts for just her 500 TV shows (not to mention movies). She yelled, affected her Lucy Ricardo voice (which took a toll on her vocal chords) & drank Scotch as well as being a dyed-in-the-wool smoker

I'm sorry but I DEFINITELY think that Lucy should be on Mount Rushmore! She has given so much more to the world (not just the US) in laughter, tears and outright joy than any of the men currently on there. Saying that she doesn't belong is an insult.

  • @DonnaBrooks

Please have some perspective: Those men on Mt. Rushmore gave us the country in which you have freedoms & civil rights & National Parks. These are ideas that have been copied by countries all around the world! Lucy doesn't belong there. Her life mission & contribution to humanity & the U.S. was different. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, & other memorials suitable for an entertainer. She doesn't belong on a statue with great former Presidents! I mean, why not insert her into the statue of the marines raising the flag at Iwo Jima? She did HER part to win that war! Or why wasn't she buried in Arlington National Cemetery?

did Phil actually say Lucy was, "flaunting her body" in that scene in the red dress? what the frig is he talking about - it's the most baggy, non-form fitting outfit ever. during this time period, older women weren't "allowed" to show their bodies anymore. it was moo-moos and baggy, non descript old lady outfits - that and the helmet head hair-dos, made women look 20 years older than their years - very sad. the only possible exception was Dinah Shore, but she had a natural sexuality to her that defied age - just ask Burt Reynolds .. . .
