LUANG PRABANG IS SUCH AN UNDERRATED CITY (and so budget friendly!)

I can't believe more people aren't talking about how incredible Luang Prabang is! This is absolutely one of my favorite small cities in all of South East Asia and is by far one of the most inexpensive places that I've been to. From it's beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Old Town, to its dozens of gorgeous Buddhist Temples, to the stunning nature surrounding it, Luang Prabang should definitely be on your travel bucket list. Laos on a whole is not at all as touristy as neighboring Vietnam and Thailand and definitely has a lot to offer. Let me know in the comments if you have here before and what your experience was!

Luang Prabang is amazing and so were Laos people. A meal for 2 can be much cheaper than 60 USD. The street food at the night market was perhaps the best I had in my whole life, even if I am not a fan of sticky rice. There was also good french food (for e.g. crêpes).

Welcome to Laos, I hope you enjoy with my country. Laos is the place that less people know I really glad that have someone show how my country is, and also "Mango Sticky rice" is the dessert that have in many countries, it's not weird that you think it's Thai dessert because Thai made it popular but actually you also can find it in other country such as Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, ... although it's not many equal in Thailand and I think cause Laos is the land of sticky rice so for me it will tasted better than other. Hope you like it as well and sorry if my English skill is not good.

Mango sticky rice It is definitely a food that was created in Thailand. Because the sides must be mixed with coconut milk to be delicious with mango. Do you use coconut milk in Laotian, Vietnamese, and Cambodian food? We have a longer and clearer history of this food than you. Don't claim it's your food because it uses sticky rice. That's nonsense. Just accept that the influence of Thai food in this era has spread to neighboring countries. That's enough. Nothing was damaged.

@@chaserbundit43 I never said that it's not Thai food, I said that it's also have in many countries and I don't know how history is it, but I mentioned that I like Lao version the most and hope they like it as well because Laos is land of sticky rice and we ate everything with sticky rice in very long time and if you don't know we also use milk coconut in some food too, such as "Khao Pun and Khao Tom" It's not many food as in Thai but we also using it too.

It’s growing fast. When I was there in 2018, at around 0:23 I never saw that many people there. Places change so fast. A few years ago, the ‘it’ backpacker place was Bali, but now that’s over priced, and has more foreigners than locals. I hope Luang Prabang takes its time developing. There’s no rush. Thanks for bringing back some good memories of this wonderful place! 🙂👍

Laos has always been a bit slower than Cambodia and other surrounding countries, when it comes to development and tourism. Hoever, it is nowadays quite a known destination here in SE Asia, with more and more tourism from the surrounding countries as well. Many Singaporeans, Malaysians, Thai and Vietnamese visit it, knowing they get good value for their local currencies and money goes a long way.

Fabulous depiction of the place, Alina. I can't believe how little it seems to have changed in the 11 years since we were there! The night market scenes brought back lots of memories. Glad you mentioned the part about them having to set up and take down their displays every night...not trivial...and yet it must be worth it for them. Such a great market, though. Very different from the regular market that is open during the day. Definitely worth a visit as it isn't touristy. Also, even though your drone shots captured things very well, we enjoyed the commanding views from the temple at the top of the hill near the centre of town.

OMG my favorite hotel is right across the street where you guys dine.... that tall 3 story building, right in the heart of the night market. Best place to stay and you can sit at the balcony, looking down at the night market. Can't wait to come there in May and am definitely staying at that hotel.

Luang Prabang has been settled since ancient times, since the 600s. It was an old Khmer settlement which was abandoned and settled by Tai peoples, ancestors of the Thai and Lao. The Tai founded various city states that warred against each other. Unity came to Laos in 1353 when all the Tai states in the region were conquered by Fa Ngum, a son of an exiled Tai prince, who founded the Kingdom of Lan Xang ( literally translated it means " Kingdom of a Million Elephants and a White Parasol). Fa Ngum was aided in his conquest by the Khmers or Cambodians who in return for aid in his conquest, promised to spread Theravada Buddhism throughout his kingdom.

I was there in Nov' 2003. There has been a coup and the city was under curfew. I had come up from Thailand on a boat trip that took us a couple of days. Street lanterns at night, beautiful architecture with quaint buildings and narrow paths. Peaceful and honest people. It was a magical experience. One day we went to visit a waterfall, as we walked out to it we met a guy who invited us in to his house to meet his pets....an Asian tiger, a bear and it's bear cub. You couldn't make it up! I'll never forget that trip. Thanks Alina for sharing your time there.

This was a eye opening video of a place that I really only had heard of by name. Laos as a whole is a place I have read about in the past but not recently. From you video this struck me as one of the most English friendly places in Asia. Many signs had an English translations and it seems that a fair number of locals have a limited command of the language. I expected more French because of its colonial past but other than the architectural touches I didn't see a lot of french. The was a fairly visible number of non asians which shows my lack of familiarity with this area. Alina when you had the Mango fried rice I thought you were going to do the old cartoon Snuffles the dog thing, MMum and levitate like when he got a dog bone. Your Dad put it best " The best Mango Fried Rich I've ever had". No equivocation there. Another enjoyable video.

Yeah I was surprised by it as well! With French there was actually a lot of people from France there (could hear the language on the street) but not a lot of signs or locals speaking it.

There actually wasn’t that many tourists around other than at the night market. During the day when everyone is spread out it actually felt really nice and quiet. The dry season from December - March would probably be the best time weather wise.

i Love the Laos people, they are mostly humble and kind, shy and i respect their honesty. Buddhism is great! It aligns with other religions, there's no hostility and there's no "my way or the highway", kind of teachings in buddhism.

Have a nice trip in Laos with your dad, Alina. I have never been to Laos, but many times in Thailand Nong Khai province. Ventiane capital of Laos is a bridge (the "Friendship" bridge) and the Mekhong river away to Nong Khai. I have the plan to visit one day of another, but by plane (Bangkok-Luang Prabang-Ventiane) then by boat on the river to the east.

The first kings of Lan Xang expanded the kingdom. Lan Xang reached the height of its prosperity under King Souligna Vongsa in the 1600s before declining and splitting into three kingdoms - Kingdom of Luang Prabang, Kingdom of Champassak and Kingdom of Vientiane in the early 1700s. Laos remain divided first under the control of Thailand and then part of French Indochina, colonial possession of France from 1883 to 1946. In 1946 after World War II, the French returned and reconstituted the Kingdom of Laos. Laos soon got dragged into the Vietnam War battling the Vietnamese Communists and their allies, the Pathet Lao. In 1975 the Pathet Lao seized power and since then Laos has been a communist country.
