    I have a 97 trans am . You can repin your factory harness to a gm p01 pcm connector (most people call it a 411 pcm) you can get them pretty cheap from a wrecking yard from like a 2001 express van. You use the low reference from the opti for cam sensor and the crank sensor for crank reference instead of opti. Hptuners can program that pcm. All together I'm in it for like 200 dollars 96-97 have a 4x crank trigger. If you have an earlier lt1 your gonna need to get a front cover and trigger wheel from one.

    Great info ... wanted to mention another option if you have a good optispark is an LTCC system .. or if you are really handy you can convert to 411pcm using a 96-up cover and relutor wheel.. this converts it to a batch fire system with no need for a rear distributor ....

    so here’s the thing: my understanding and research would the most cost effective to be get a some what name brand opti, open it up, lock tite every bolt and rtv seal it… then also get an electric water pump which eliminates the weep hole on the mechanical ones that drip onto the opti!

  • @LSxMotorsports2021

    @LSxMotorsports2021

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes that would work.I don't think an electric water pump is needed though.There are videos on KZread showing how to add venting to the non vented Opti sparks.Thats the biggest thing is getting ventilation to the non vented optispark.The air flow will pull the moisture out which is the biggest cause of failures.

    You know instead of going and spending a ton on trying to put and electric waterpump on you can just tap the weep hole and put a barbed fitting and run a hose

    Im going to delete my opti spark for a Torque head 24x or EFI connection. For now i use the MSD lt1 distributor and when it fails i get it repaired instead of throwing it away. They fail just like others do but its the only one that lets me drive home when it starts failing.

    The best indicator is a rough or choppy idle which is almost impossible to tune it out.Just search for Cammed Camaro on KZread and listen to the videos to see if yours sounds similar.The bigger the cam the more choppy it will sound.I have videos on our channel of my camaro idling which has a small cam.Just check out several videos of cammed cars and compare their sound to yours.If your having trouble with stalling then it is either tuned wrong or there is a problem somewhere.

    93-97 cars are not that desirable because of optispark issues. I should know my 94 firebird has been off the road the past 8 years due to three bad optisparks.all the aftermarket optisparks are somewhat sketchy. Also gen 2 lt1 engines are a pain in the ass to work on especially in the f body. Recently i been trying to get in touch with Torqhead to buy one of their kits all i get is thier voice mail.

    I sent an e-mail with a bunch of questions and he answered about 3days later. It does say it will be 3-4 weeks after ordering before it gets shipped out. But once we get it I will post a picture on the channel and probably not long after that we will have a video. The owner of the Z28 is pretty anxious to get this installed. I am anxious to see if it can be tuned as simple as my LS1 Camaro.

    Sorry to hear that.It does happen especially on the earlier cars that don't have the venting.If the car is in really good condition you may want to get an upgraded version.But if your on a budget you could get a stock replacement and convert it to a vented Opti.There are videos here on KZread that show how to do it.It doesn't completely solve the Opti problem but it can prolong the life of it.

    @@LSxMotorsports2021 I'm getting my MSD distributor back and for $250 MSD installs a new cap and rotor, new MSD opti spark sensor, bearings and includes shipping. The benefit I get from the MSD units is that I'm able to drive home when it fails. I'll eventually upgrade to the Torque Head when I build a 383.

  • @LSxMotorsports2021

    That's great that MSD stands behind their Opti spark.We just installed a torque head on a 94 Camaro and it was pretty pricey. We ran into a problem that I hope we get fixed in the next day or two. Waiting for a part but I will explain in the video what went wrong. But I was able to download the tune from the new PCM that came with the torqhead and I am pleased to say it is going to be very easy to tune it with HP tuners.

  • @CaseTheCorvetteMan
    @CaseTheCorvetteMan8 ай бұрын

    The best one to use is the factory fitted original unit (not the AC Delco replacement) followed straight up by the Petris. MSD is shit, and fails for the same reason as all the cheap ones do, the sensor dies from heat. I've used loads of Petris units and never had a single one fail. The original factory units also don't fail, a simple clean out and new cap and rotor, they always work. You can use the MSD cap and rotor kit on the earlier spline drive and this adds the venting. My factory original lasted 29 years and was still working fine when i removed it. I've seen a fair few non vented units go well over 100,000 miles without being touched. Corvettes had LT1s from 92-96.
