LS Swapping a S10: What You Need/Parts List
Want your own 5.3 S10? There isn't a whole lot that goes into it. You just need to make sure that you have all the parts, so you're not sitting around waiting for parts to come in for a long time.
This is everything that I used and did to Ls Swap my 1996 S10 SS that originally was a 4.3/60e truck. Each truck is going to be different than the next, but for the most part they're the same. A lot of the parts are going to be the same. The wiring, driveshaft, and transmission are the main things that will differ between each. I'll leave a list below of a basic parts breakdown (you can get the swap done with less than in the list):
LS swap parts list:
Engine/trans: $800
Harness (CPW new harness): $900
Harness (rework your harness): $400
Driveshaft modification: $150-200
Intrepid fans (junkyard): $30
4.3 S10 Radiator: $125
Engine mounts: $130
Oil pan: $240
Trans Crossmember: $250
Shorty headers: $150
Fuel pump: $85
Fuel lines(3/8 rubber hose): $40
Radiator hose: $30

Thanks for the info. I have a different application - 5.3 into a '94 S10 4x4 4.3 with the 5 speed manual. Mine also has the manual shift t-case which is rare. Mine also has the throttle body injection so I know the computer and fuel pump need to be upgraded. Also, no plans to race. I've done a 5.7 into a 2000 zr2 blazer a few years back. I bought this truck about 9 months ago for $300, it had a hole in the block from a rod. Could not find a 4.3 VIN Z, didn't want to change harness and everything so I found a '99 4.3 and put the original head and intake. Liked the '94 metal timing cover so modified it to work since it was pre crank sensor. The '99 oil pan I had to modify for the clutch slave to fit. Actually runs great. The body and everything else is in mint condition. I just want a v8 now.

I have a 96 s10 and want to swap the engine but I don't know what engine would be better
@demontech06
4 жыл бұрын
That's a hard question to answer. The 4.8L, 5.3L, and the 6.0L are all good engines. The question you need to answer is what are you using the truck for? The smaller 2 are easier to find than the 6.0L. The 6.0L was found in a few vehicles, but the easiest 6.0L to find are the LQ4 and LQ9 that were in the larger trucks and Escalades. I stuffed a 6.0L in mine, with a large cam, heads and the rest of the goodies. My truck started as a 4 cyl 5 speed specimen. Depending on what setup you have originally will kind of determine swap difficulty. My best advice BEFORE you attempt this swap is do your research first. Ask around to see who's done this swap before, and see what they did. Second is decide what engine your going to use, and where you can get it. Third is to make sure you have a decent vehicle. The S10 is the perfect platform for LS swaps. If the vehicle has a lot of rust, then you will want to find a different one. Any modifications done to a LS engine will produce more power and WILL find a weak point. That's why my first S10 project is sitting at the scrap yard now. The frame was rotted in a critical area. The truck launched, twisted, and never came back from the twist. The frame actually split just in front of the rear tire. I have almost 16K into my current 99 project, and its almost done now. My 99 was stripped down completely, frame was gusseted(prevents twisting), all suspension components replaced with tubular stuff, new hardware for body and mounts, rebuilt silverado rear axle installed, and a stage 6 transmission. Obviously you don't need to go as far as I did. I did mine like this so I would have much more room to grow. I still have the factory A/C as well. I could very easily go on a lot further, but hopefully you have a better idea. I wish you luck in your decision. Sorry for the long post.

The LS swap into a 4WD S10 or Blazer is more time and detail oriented. The problem with those trucks is the front axle. If you use the stock IFS front differential, then a custom pan will be needed. The 4WD's have clearance issues with the front differentials.. The 4L80E is a good transmission to use except for its overall size. Depending on the hardware you use, the 4L80E might not fit in the tunnel without massaging the floor pan. A built 60E, 65E, or even a 70E will hold up to a very well built LS. The only time I've seen anyone use a manual case in a S10 or a Blazer, is after a front axle swap was done. There's some work there to make that happen as well. There's a few companies out there now that do virtually make these a drop in swap. This video mentioned current performance for the wiring harnesses. The cost is high to some, but you won't find a better harness!! The CPW harness is PLUG AND PLAY! Talk with Jared at Current Performance about your swap project, and he will get you pointed in the right direction. Good luck!

@@krauSS02 , the bell housing is different on the 2.2 and will Not bolt up to a small block Chevy V-8 engine , The only trans in an S-10 truck that will bolt up is the 4.3 V-6 , You might be able to remove the bell housing and change it to fit the engine you want to install , but you may have to do some modifications too , And the front input shaft is different than the V-8 so you will need to change that also , And I would change the throw out bearing , it was for a small clutch with a 4 cylinder , Now you have a bigger clutch with a V-8

@@krauSS02 , those transmissions were built for the stress and strain of a 4 cylinder , Now you want to double or triple the horse power and torque put on this same used trans , How long do you think that it's going to last with that V-8 ?

@@LsBluu Thanks for the quick response. I have heard so many stories about which pan fits without cutting the front crossmember, I just needed to get you to clarify since you have firsthand knowledge and seem to have a good grasp on the matter. I will be using the 5 speed manual and plan to use the existing crossmember if possible. I understand it may need some massaging to work.

Mine was weird I had to use the Silverado tube with the s10 dipstick the Silverado dipstick was too long for my 4l60e. I don’t have the slightest clue why. Maybe the 60e I got has a more shallow pan for some reason.
