    As someone whose local PD is more than happy to bring lethal levels of "non-lethal" suppression to lawful protests, I can confirm it's bad. I spent the last 25 years of my working career servicing audiometric testing equipment. Our audiometers can tell you how deft you really are after standing in one of these sound fields. If you are an employee in the United States you are covered under OSHA. The equipment that I also sold & service could tell you how quickly you are into an OSHA violation. High-pressure sound fields are very dangerous and tend to be very permanent.

    just fingers probably wouldnt be very effective, but like others have said it is less effective at close range. mainly because at close range the fastest way to get out of the path of the noise becomes toward the operator or a short walk to either side. also if it's so loud it makes you deaf, now you are deaf and not at all bothered by that noise ever again. probably best to just avoid noises that loud in general though, instead of trying to get close, if you value your hearing.

    I have alot of car audio experience and wanted to let you know your lrad is being way underpowered. The amp you selected will only do an actual 150rms x2 at 4ohms. (how you have it wired) And it only does 300w rms x2 at 2ohms. Basically all of the ratings given for the amp are false. An easy way to make a accurate estimation of how much power a car amplifier will do is to take its fusing amperage and multiply it by 10. In the case of your amp 60ax10=600w. Doing it by 10 instead of 12(v) will give you room for efficiency loss and the math is easier. The amp linked below would be a much better choice and its basically the same price. If you wire this one (its a 4ch) at 4ohms stereo (how it does its most power, unlike a 2ch that does its most @2ohms stereo or 4ohms mono "bridged") by bridging the channels you will be getting the full power from the amp which is around 900w rms and be tripling the power being fed to your drivers (still under the 1200w rms the drivers can handle though) www.ebay.com/itm/Orion-CBT35004-Cobalt-4-Channel-Amplifier-3500-Watts-Max/333693285505?epid=21040375480&hash=item4db1ab7481:g:R~cAAOSwJsVfPwpt Or you could just buy another amp just like you have and run both of them @4ohms mono (2 drivers wired in parallel with both channels of each amp bridged together) and you would be quadrupling the power your drivers are currently getting at around 1200w rms total. You would then be getting full power from both amps (instead of all 4 drivers getting half power from 1 amp) and it would be a perfect match for your drivers which handle 1200w rms.

    I don't think the actual output power is the most important in this application. Sure the rating of the amp is completely bogus (5000 Watts China), but whatever actual power this thing can put out, at 1/4 gain it was already too much. The amp is already at least double what's required!

    Consider also the explosively-pumped thermoacoustic generator, aka a valveless pulsejet and famously used on the WW2 buzzbombs. These are infamously loud, anecdotally projecting these pressures to distances of 6 miles or more. The "acoustic laser" exploits something similar, the simple example being a test tube with a piece of refractory honeycomb material inserted perhaps an inch or two from the closed end of the tube. Upon heating, the expanding air in the tube is restricted by the ceramic refractory grid, yet the low pressure created sucks in more air, and you get a resonant effect that produces a loud tone due to the pressure waves and horn effect at the open end of the tube. This is a reversible process, point your DIY LRAD at this thing and you can measure the closed end of the tube heat up. Most curious is the thermoacoustic refrigeration based on these concepts... I would love to see you explore some of this if you haven't already.

    Very Interesting video, I have all ways been VERY INTERESTED in sound waves (actually I am a sound Technician for local bands or "Sound Man" we were called at one time, this is a interesting subject for me and I understand the pain aspect for crowed control for the device that you built but have you ever given any thought to the lower frequencies? to see if there is any effect at all on the body besides the hearing aspect ??? I am sure you have heard of Mr Tesla machine that " supposedly started to destroy his work shop? from a harmonic low frequency pulse?( I know It is NOT the same thing ) a bit different than what you show here But I have ALL WAYS wanted to build a speaker system that could handle the lower spectrum to see if in deed there is a physical connection to the lower frequency bands on the human body ? When I first started to run the sound systems for large name bands I was all ways fascinated by the fact that the High end speakers or cones could be heard close up but the bass sounds or much lower frequencies could not be heard close up but you needed to stand 10 to 15 feet away from the speaker to hear and FEEL the bass frequencies I know now it is the wave Length of the bass frequency the wave length of the hearing spectrum is Fascinating!!! Thanks for posting the video hope to see more on the subject

    A 9x9 or 16x16 phased array of these speakers might be able to focus the beam a bit more. But it depends on the wavelength, so you need a frequency dependent phasing done in a beefy DSP.

  • @TechIngredients

    @TechIngredients

    Did you watch our first video on the LRAD? As the number of speakers increases, the amplitude of the peaks and nodes increases and their number decreases, but the sound wavelength which is on the order of 15 cm. requires a much larger speaker spacing to make phase focusing significant. You're right though, it could achieve a little bit.

    I'd recommend upgrading the amplifier. That Cobalt only puts out around 1,200 watts rms at 2 ohm and because it's not a 1 ohm stable full range amplifier the efficiency just isn't there so your getting nowhere near its rated power much less the 5000 watts the amp states that it makes. A really good company that puts out rated power plus more is Rockford Fosgate and I'd suggest going with either them or another of the same quality. Also if you want the most out of your settup I'd suggest replacing your input wire with 0 guage welding lead cable so the amp has all the volts and amperage it needs to be stable without having to over work and cause amp to clip. That will also damage the drivers in the long run. I've been around audio my entire life learning house and car audio at a very young age. I also have played guitar for over 20 years now playing and recording music since I was 13 so im right at home when it comes to audio of any sorts.

    If you took advantage of the wattage these drivers are rated for you'd drastically see a incline with the decibels. One more thing would be using a RCA inline crossover with multiple band equalizer to dial it Into the exact frequency range that the drivers and box dimensions equate to and find it's resonance frequency to then know where your decibel peaks are.
