I very much appreciate all the comments on my video. Love the Rover community. Keep the advice/questions coming. I will try to report back any progress on this noise if I ever figure it out. Lord knows there are a lot of us scratching our heads on this topic. I am going to look at the exhaust manifold and all connections before the muffler.... I am a little suspicious that its an exhaust tick... but I could just be in denial.

Ya know… I’ve had the same thought. It’s on the drivers side of the engine bay. The fuel pumps are on the left. It’s not my timing, I’ve had the chains done as well. I’m gonna have my mechanic check in on this for me.

@@drk.walters Please report back what you find (or don't find) out. I have been unsuccessful using a borescope to look for signs of an exhaust leak, mainly because it is so hard to get a good view from any angle. My stethoscope confirms the tick is on the drivers side too. Maybe a smoke test through the tailpipe is in order... That should be an interesting exercise. Anyway, it sounds like we have similar issues... truck runs great, has new chains (etc), just sounds bad. Let us know what you hear from your mechanic.

So mine isn't as pronounced as this video.. however I still hear it. My Land Rover Indy said that it's not an exhaust leak as far as he can test. He also added that he's never heard one 5.0 that sounds the same as another at this age, mileage (95k on mine). Given it doesn't affect performance or reliability at this point (I've now done 7k miles and the sound hasn't changed) I'm not going to pursue it further. The valve-train in these does in fact make a lot of mechanical noise. At the end of the day I don't hear it in the cabin.

@@drk.walters - Thanks for the update. Fortunately, the cabins on these things keep noises out really well, because I don't hear mine either until I roll the windows down. I just hate that you can hear me come down the street before you see me.

@rick f did you every figure this out? My 2012 makes a similar noise but does not affect performance. Timing chain was done. Runs great. Other than the noise.

No. I haven't yet... been dealing with coolant leak issues... just got those sorted with a new water pump, crossovers, and oil cooler pipe. Good times.

Did you check the timing chain with a screw driver through the oil fill hole to see if there is any slack in it?

  • @rickf5094

    @rickf5094

    Жыл бұрын

Yes, I have checked them and they are pretty tight. The timing chains were done about 10k miles ago by a well established rover mechanic. So I am confident they are not the culprit.

@@rickf5094 Only other thing I do know about that engine is that the injectors can get noisy as they age. I have a 2012 LR4 and it's a tad noisy. It has 80k on it and I'm going to have the chain done very shortly. If it's the injectors you could try running some seafoam in the gas for a couple tanks.

@@bigh7777 I have tried seafoam in the gas tank, although I have seen mixed reviews on doing that to these engines. It didn't help the noise on mine.

Does it keep doing it after you have driven it for a bit? You could have a rattly lifter

Yes. Noise is consistent regardless of how much it is driven. It seems to be a tad bit louder when it is cold outside. So I am starting to wonder if its an exhaust leak somewhere between the heads/manifold and the muffler.

What did you find out? I have a 2010 RRS 5.0 just did the tensioners and the guides. I have a knocking noise as well even after new timing. It will complete go away if I rev it up past 3k and the knocking is completely gone until I shut it off and start it again. No codes no loss in power runs amazing just can't figure out the noise. Put new seal kit on vaccum pump as well.

@@rickf5094 I may have figured it out. 4 months ago I added 1 quart of marvel mystery oil to the engine oil. I removed 1 quart of oil to add the MM oil ofcourse. It took maybe 1 hour of driving to fix the knocking. It has never came back. After an hour of driving on highway not city I shut it down and went to restart it the knocking noise was 30% there after the next time I started it 0% noise. After A LOT of homework on this problem I come to find out the intake valve train has 3 lobs per valve with a hydraulic mechanism that if they get sludge in there the noise will appear until cleaned. Also there is a cam adjustment solenoid on the back of both heads right behind the intake cam shaft. If that solenoid gets bebri, trash or sludge in it then it is possible to cause the noise along with the misfire codes. 3 weeks ago the head warped in between 3,5 cylinders and 2,4,6 cylinders causing coolant to pressure up but never mix oil/coolant. So its completely tore down and at the machine shop getting honed, decked block crank polish and heads milled. I should get it back any day now to rebuild it.

@@RaptureReady33 Thats interesting. I am due for an oil change, so I will give the MMO a try. Did you leave the MMO in until the next scheduled oil change (5k miles)? I have read where guys will run it for about a 100 miles or so (with cheaper oil) then change the oil again with the more expensive recommended oil. Sorry to hear about the warped heads.

@@rickf5094 Yes, I left the Marvel Mystery oil in for 3500 miles. That was my oil change intervals 5000 was alot of miles to me and after reading up on how the internals especially the timing chain parts don't like that long of intervals.Also.....Im in Texas where it's 1,000,000 degrees all the time so I run 5W30 not sure where you are.

Mine had ticking like a lifter. My mech replaced timing chain guides and tensioner and noise went away.... He said the chain was not stretched and could be left on. Cost 1600 US with oil change.
