LR Baggs Anthem Pickup Test - Best Acoustic Guitar Pickup

Музыка

This is a review of the LR Baggs Anthem Pickup for acoustic guitars. It happens to be my favorite pickup for acoustic guitar. The Anthem blends a piezo pickup that LR Baggs calls the Element with a condenser microphone built into the inside of the guitar. The ability to blend the two makes this solution for plugged-in acoustic guitar incredibly versatile. No longer do you have to sacrifice your tone while playing live. The Anthem sounds incredibly natural in comparison to the typical cardboard-like DI that most guitar players are used to. In this video, I am using my Eastman E20OM acoustic guitar which recently just had the Anthem installed.

I sent my Eastman E6OM to the luthier today for installing Anthem system. I've had SD MagMic for 1,5 yrs now so I'm really exited about the sound. I find the sound in MagMic to be either to muddy by the magnetic pick alone and to much overtone from the condenser mic, so that's why I wanna swap it out.

I’m literally going to get the anthem installed on my Taylor 214e (2005 USA model). It is one of the Taylor that is electric but don’t have the signature pre-amp. The anthem system is perfect for my guitar.

That’d definitely be a big upgrade from the Taylor expression system. In fact with that old that may not even even be the expression system. But even the newer expression system sounds now where close to the anthem. So you’ll be in a good spot! 👌🏻

The Piezo is brighter than the mic between the two. It has more piercing mids which is why it’s typically less desirable on its own. I always find myself making a cut at 500-600hz and 3-4k when just working with a piezo.

I'm considering an Anthem SL, which is the budget package in the anthem series. It has the piezo and the true mic blended 50/50 by default and you cannot change this mix. Is a 50/50 mix of the 2 systems a desirable sound in your opinion?

You can actually change the blend, but not on the run -- there isn't sound hole control. But there is an adjustment you can make if you want to dial in a certain mix you prefer.

@@thepedaljunkie535 There is a hole there -- you need the tool. That is this rather long stick with a pointed flat end that fits into the hole which is right next to the volume control. Probably an optical screw driver might work - has to have a very small thin and flat end though. Trouble is you have to loosen at least some of the strings to get the tool in there. It comes with the pickup. Here is a link to a video where the actual adjusting tool is demonstrated. I like this pickup because it's cheaper, and I don't need to change that adjustment on the fly. If you do need to change that adjustment during a performance, though, the SL is not for you. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y3mGkrNmm7i1f5c.html

Hey! I own a Taylor and want to change out my pick up system for the active element, or the anthem. As my current Taylor expression system is very prone to feedback, I am concerned that this condenser mic inside the anthem is going to cause feedback at loud gig volumes. What's your experience with feedback in a gig environment?

  • @lukebsings7342

Worth noting its the Taylor 214 with the ES2 system fitted. I just don't like its amplified sound, but as I said I am concerned about live feedback risk though a PA with a condenser mic inside the guitar. cheers

  • @JoshuaKrell

Valid concern! It’s pretty controlled tho and this is why the have the blend knob to blend back in the piezo. I personally don’t care for just the condenser sound by itself because of its placement under the bridge it is overly boomy on most guitars. But the piezo by itself is on the thinner side like all piezos. So blend it half way and you get feedback control and a more balanced sound. I had a 414 from a few years ago and this kicks tail over the expression system!

@@JoshuaKrell fantastic that’s really helpful! I’ll give you a sub for your trouble 😂 out of curiosity, and no worries if you don’t know: if you completely dial in the piezo from the blend… so you are fully on the piezo… does that then essentially become an active element? Or is the active element (under saddle) and the anthems under saddle slightly different? Seeing as I am tied between the two, my thoughts are the anthem could give me the same undersaddle, with the added condenser blend option!? Cheers again!

@@lukebsings7342 thanks man! My understanding is it actually is indeed the element pickup. The anthem is their true mic plus the element with the ability to end. The anthem SL doesn’t have the ability to blend and is fixed.

Hey @lukebsings7342 , I have a taylor 322e with the expression system and it was a terrible sounding pickup (in my humble opinion) so I swapped it for an anthem SL a few years back. The sound quality is not even close, the Anthem is sooo much more natural and balanced. The expression system is really boomy in the low end and tacky in the high end but the anthem is far more natural across the whole frequency range. I have got a Martin OM28E as well which had a Fishman Aura F1 system and it's currently in the shop getting a full anthem fitted. They are extremely good pickups and offer a far better representation of the acoustic sound of your guitar :)

The SL is actually just missing the blend knob so you could get the same sound and with more customization out of the full anthem then the SL.
