LPIC-1 vs. Linux+: Which is Better?

The CompTIA Linux+ and Linux Professional Institute (LPI) LPIC-1 are the two most prominent, vendor-neutral Linux certifications available today for those looking to acquire entry-level Linux certs.
Until recently, CompTIA and the LPI had a partnership that guaranteed LPIC-1 certification to anyone who passed CompTIA’s Linux+ exam. In this video, CBT Nuggets trainer Shawn Powers weighs in on which certification is best for you to pursue since their breakup in April 2019.

I studied the first 15 chapters of LPIC 1 (part 1) and have had to drop it, because while it does give me theoretical knowledge of Linux, it doesn't actually make me much better at using / administering Linux. Therefore I've switched to RHCSA to get way more hands on experience.

It sorta always surprised me that CompTIA didn't have their own exam. There was even a time you could get THREE for one, as the OpenSUSE cert was tied in there too. (I think that was the third anyway, it's been a few years) Thanks for the kind words!

There are 2 other benefits of the L+: 1 - you get to renew ALL your CompTIA certs. If you pass, the 3 year expiration resets. 2 - The L+ stackable with the A+. If you have the A+ and L+ you automatically get the "CompTIA Systems Support Specialist" (CSSS). FWIW. I'm doing the L+ FIRST but will go the LPIC-1 SECOND. And then in a perfect world I'd wrap all LPIC and move into RH. HR folks love to see a dozen ACTIVE certs.

I'm in process of going through all the videos and writing down all of the notes for everything so then i don't have to watch them anymore and can just break them down into sections and read them. Ive made flashcards of a lot of the linux commands. By the end of this month i should be done with the videos and then can just focus on learning them 1 by 1... i hope to be ready to proceed for official exams by about july. Since ill just need to know enough to score 70% on a 40 question test that will be an overview of all 4... then once i pass that i proceed to train and sit the real cysa+ exam once i have an understanding. But I'm enjoying the hacking stuff the most to be honest lol. Thats where my real passion and interest lies. So im thinking i may take the OSCP after and do professional pen testing as a career... we will see how it goes... but basically my life right now is making the sacrifice for work. I cant rest or relax until i know this work is done! And i still have quite the hill to climb!... but ill get there... by the end of the year i should be in a very good spot and i should be a professional hacker by next year ;)

@@johntiles I was in the same boat. I was always good with computers but I didn't have the qualifications to prove it, it was all just personal experience. The sad reality is though that in the job market having things on paper matters. I originally applied to go back to college at 25 considering the computer science route but got rejected. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with life until I got a little bit older... I made foolish decisions when I was young and dropped out of school. But then this cybersecurity traineeship kind of fell on my lap when I needed it most. Things work strange in life, this opportunity really found me when I was ready for it. And I gotta tell you... things are surely looking up! I now work in a law firm fixing computers for solicitors. it's only a small company with 60 or so people and I have such a cozy job dude! it's a complete step up from where I was at just for getting the CompTIA A+ exams! and I know where I'm going in life, I have a direction, goals, and heading for that next step up! and now that I'm learning about professional hacking, I am really enjoying that too! there's some really great information and it's good to learn a skill like that. I would advise you gotta go for it dude! it's hard work and it will consume your life a bit, you do have to study, put in the time and the hours. but you gotta look at it like it's X amount of time to invest for the rest of my future! I recommend checking professor messor channel for help with A+, Network+, Security+. He's really good! I had professional videos I'd paid for on those courses and they were not as good as his in my opinion. Let me know what you decide to do and keep me posted on your journey if you remember lol. It is certainly not a bad decision though.... Trust me!
