LOWEST VISIBILITY landing I've EVER done

Landing during low visibility operations at Canberra Airport on the ILS, flying IFR from Melbourne, Australia, in a Cirrus SR22. In today's video I'm flying to Canberra for a conference, watch the flight, the low visibility approach, plus the return flight to Moorabbin Airport in Melbourne.
I'm flying to the Women in Aviation/Aerospace Australia Summit in Canberra to give a talk. Flying my Cirrus SR22 VH-EYZ from Melbourne takes around 1 hour 40 minutes. I get vectored onto the STAR (Standard Terminal Arrival Route) then the ILS (Instrument Landing System) for runway 35 at Canberra Airport, a Class C airport in the capital of Australia. The cameras don't show the exact moment when I could see the runway approach lights and runway threshold, but I was above my personal minimums (which were the ILS minimums plus 50 feet) when I saw the runway and committed to land.

I wasn’t liking the look of 7, you can see the ice forming on the camera. ATC here are awesome, they’ll usually work out a way to give you what you want, and I mentioned icing so he knew what I was facing. Thanks mate, looking forward to your next one as always.

Thank you Stefan! I'm a pretty fresh private pilot, but already over 40 and I love flying, but I'm sometimes afraid of it and sometimes something in between. I really appreciate your permanent encouragement to follow the path, to train, to push yourself - just to climb the mountain. That makes me feel that you have been maybe in the same kind of "world of emotions" during the past 14 years.

Welcome to my home town! Yes, Canberra gets some funny weather patterns. Made me chuckle on your approach when all was relatively clear until finals. The whole city sits in a bowl and the surrounding terrain causes the crud to form into a puddle in the centre! Sat in a hold over Tumut for half an hour waiting for conditions to improve once and on another flight shot the ILS twice before diverting to our alternate (YGLB).

1977 - about this time of year and I was waiting at Canberra Airport for a flight to Melbourne. I was in the Air Force and returning to Laverton. Fog was thick and all the flights were delayed - nothing going anywhere. Out of the gloom comes a C130A Hercules - lands and taxies to the Air Force Ramp. Quick phone call to Air Movements - " Where is that Herc going?" - Laverton. "Any room on board for a couple of stranded Airmen?" - Yep - get here PDQ. Herc loads pretty much immediately and off to Laverton we went. TAA even let me use the ticket on another day and I saved the taxi fare from the city to Laverton. Got to love the Air Force can do attitude and the fog.

I flew night cargo from SFO to LAX, BUR, PHX and SLC in the '70s in Beech D18s and then DC-3s. During the Summer when the coastal fog was almost always thick at SFO and LAX, we had to shoot ILS approaches. A lot of freighters arrived at LAX every night between Midnight and 6AM. LAX couldn't shut down, so the weather was never below 200/1/2 no matter what it actually was. There were nights that we hand flew Cat III approaches before they existed. We got very good at shooting these approaches between DC-8s and 727s at 140kts., then quickly slowing to landing speed of 70 to 80kts. as we got close to the runway. On a couple of nights the only way I knew we were on the ground was the fact that I heard the squeak of the landing gear touching down. I could barely see the runway and taxiway lights to taxi in. It was a different time in aviation. Jets had been in use for about 9 - 10 years, and just about all Captains were very good stick and rudder, seat of the pants flyers.

i had a lot of time in Helio Couriers. Our home airport in Sonoma, CA was in uncontrolled airspace. I, and others based at the airport, considered 50 to 100 ft. a good VFR ceiling. We made up our own approaches. Napa, about ten miles away had a localiizer approach. If they had a mile visibility, we'd shoot the approach into Napa, ask for a Special VFR and turn left to scud run over the vineyards and flat farmland to Schellville. I started an aerial photo business with my Helio Courier in the '90s. Here's my old demo tape: kzread.info/dash/bejne/c2Rk2tSvlNqycbg.html

Hello Stefan, can you maybe do like a what’s is you flight bag video were you discuss what tablet you have and what apps you use and your headsets and the wristwatch you use. Where you basically show us everything you use when flying. ✈️

Nice flight (and video) Stef! Out of interest, had you considered Cooma / Snowy Mountains airport as an alternate? It may have been affected by the same weather as Canberra - if not, though, it's only 120km from CBR, with no significant terrain in between, so you could have waited it out there and done a quick hop when the weather allowed. I also believe there is a Hertz car rental there, and it's a 1.5 hour drive into the National Museum (i.e. anywhere in central Canberra). Maybe something to keep in mind if you're ever headed back to Canberra!

Albury is lower and the weather was better. I hadn’t honestly considered Cooma due the elevation, but yeah under the right conditions and due to its proximity to CBR it’s certainly a viable option.

How do you get through security without a boarding pass? Do they give you a piece of paper when you land in your own plane? Access into the airline terminal would not be possible in the US if you flew in using your own aircraft like this. You'd only have the FBO

Welcome to my airport. Wasn't you on Wednesday around 0900 was it? My office at the airport looks out over the threshold of RW 35, and I saw a Cirrus emerging from the murk that morning.

Hi Stefan thanks for the video. I am a Cirrus G1 driver and just wonder do you usually get STARS. For the last few years flying IFR I have not been given one. I must try it out on my sim just in case!!
