Lower-Carb Diet Slows Growth of Aggressive Brain Tumor

Ғылым және технология

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - University of Florida Health researchers have slowed down a notoriously aggressive type of brain tumor in mouse models by using a low-carbohydrate diet.
A high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet that included a coconut oil derivative helped reduce the growth of glioblastoma tumor cells and extended lifespan in mouse models by 50 percent, researchers found. The results were published recently in the journal Clinical Cancer Research.
Glioblastoma is the most common brain tumor in adults. There is no effective long-term treatment and patients usually live for 12 to 15 months after diagnosis, according to the National Cancer Institute.
The findings are a new twist on an old idea: The so-called ketogenic diet has been used for nearly 90 years to help reduce epileptic seizures. Now, a high-fat, low-carbohydrate version of the ketogenic diet has been shown to slow glioblastoma tumors by cutting back the energy supply they need to thrive, said Brent Reynolds, Ph.D., a professor in the department of neurosurgery in the UF College of Medicine. A glioblastoma tumor requires large amounts of energy as it grows, and the the dietary intervention works by drastically limiting the tumor’s supply of glucose, Reynolds said.

there are many anecdotal stories that very low carb eating completely kills cancer cells. also, eating very low carb is not that difficult.

Alright, sounds great. However, I would like to know if the ketogenic diet has to be done forever. This is the solution or you do it for a period of time and after that you get back to a normal life-style?

I don't think so. If you received frequent full body CT scans then you might have something to be concerned about.

Not at all. Radiation is everywhere and you are under radiation exposure every day naturally. As long as you do not have CT scans very frequently then they won’t increase your risk of cancer overall significantly. Think of those people who receive radiation therapy. The amount of radiation they receive is much more higher then your scan and their risk of developing radiation related cancer is acceptable. Your radiologist will manage the risk scientifically.

@@tnvol5331 I highly recommend checking out the channel of a vegan-keto woman who had success with her stage-4 breast cancer. Her channel on KZread is "CancerVMe" and she is working on a documentary with multiple testimonials and interviews on the latest research, as they have found all cancers (so far) need glucose and glutamine to ferment, and targeting those pathways, along with other methods, has been very effective. She has interviewed fully carnivore patients who have had similar success, which makes it intriguing as both are using deep ketosis, but on different frameworks of diet in regards to protein and fat sources.

@@tnvol5331 To compare the two in a double-blind? That would be intriguing, or at least I think that's what you're saying? Sorry, I wasn't fully tracking with what you meant exactly, but if you're curious about the work she is documenting, it's based on oncology research and those she's interviewed that are doing it on-going. Two main names in that field are Dr. Thomas Seyfried of Boston College and Dr. Dom D'Agostino, but there are many more he mentions in a lecture. It's all interesting stuff and I'm just so encouraged that those like us are all discussing it to slowly and organically do our part to where it hopefully becomes more mainstream-- metabolic therapies, that is. 🙏🙂👍
