Lower Ball Joint (LBJ) RH. Replacement in a 100 series Toyota Land Cruiser / Lexus LX470

LBJ (Lower Ball Joint) are not sold by Toyota, separate from the LCA (Lower Control Arm). So we either but a new OEM LCA w/LBJ, aftermarket LCA w/ball joint or we install an aftermarket LBJ. We've a few ways to gain access to LBJ. It's the getting to it, that takes the most time. We must get the steering knuckle out of the way. Either we remove steering knuckle completely, as I've done here. Or we disconnect the LBJ form steering knuckle and swing out of the way. Uncut was 21 minutes, cut 16 minutes.
Ball Joint press kit I used is a : Power built Kit 46. Most any parts store loans them free

Snap ring does not need to be orient, there is no top up or down side..Watch video starting at minute 14:06, for snap ring install! Also note: The ball joint must be pressed all the up into the socket of the LCA. Once all the way up in the socket, snap ring groove will be more than high enough to get snap ring on..

Keep in mind: The video is not about a specific manufacture. It's how to install a lower ball joint. You can use whatever you like.

Having trouble getting the snap ring in there. Anyone know if it goes rounded side down, flat side up? Maybe the ball joint is seated slightly off. It looks like it's in there good but theres definitely no snap when the ring goes in

Is it possible to replace the lower control arm without messing with the torsion bar adjustment? If the truck is lifted off the ground is the torsion bar still under tension?

How many miles do you recon the ball joints last vs. the bushings of the LCA. Equal life?

  • @memy895

It varies so much. In a stock 100 series, where on front end components are keep properly PM's (tight), 175k to 250K miles on LBJ. Get one lose part, like rack excessive movement or even loose wheel bearings, etc. Even hard oversize tires, take their toll. This all put added strain on ball joints. Same if ball joint bad, it effect all other components. Bushing last much longer in most cases. Keeping oils off all rubber of bushings & mounts helps.

Hello 2001LC Have you heard of Masuma (MB-3812) ball joints? I've had acceptable results with them, using OEM boot and Masuma branded lower and upper ball joints. It is common practice to use this brand in Eastern Europe, where LCs are pretty popular.

  • @FlyingDreaming

@@memy895 Typically rubber boots that Masuma ball joints packaged with are substandard quality, while ball joint itself is decent. And once you get this combo (ball joints with OEM boots) installed, it's good for 60k-80k miles or so. Yes, I think this is chinese brand. I've got couple Masuma LBJs to install once my OEM ball joints go bad, and will report on result, if you're interested.

@@FlyingDreaming Sure always interested in how long any ball joints last. But as a general rule, I avoid any product made in China. I have seen 555 boots with holes, in only 5K miles. But in every case I could track down installer, they did not remove boot to install. I think for cost, 60K miles is okay. But OEM are the best, which we only get buying the whole OEM LCA. I've a video on installing the #2 bushing and LCA also. That is the best. But cost 10X!

@@memy895 I'll let you know how Masuma is doing as a temporary solution. My mileage is a bit too low to replace control arms as a whole, but I am definitely considering this for 200k mile service. What would be the consequence of lower ball joint failure on 100 series? Would you expect knuckle to separate from control arm? Would wheel go off as well? I can handle some squeak. Wheel separation - not so much.

  • @memy895

    @memy895

@@FlyingDreaming Total failure YES, knuckle separates from control arm. Some or all control of steering is lost, but wheel/tire stays on wheel hub/knuckle. But that's is rare. As one has steering issues and often sounds long before that happens, that alert the driver.

I installed 555 ball joints during April 2020 and one of my lowers has already failed. The labor of replacing was much more costly than the money saved from buying 555 vs a premium so my advice is to learn from my mistake. Napa, moog, or yota control arm assembly.

  • @memy895

Very best is a Toyota ball joint, which only comes with LCA. Japaneses made 555 have long been the preferred second choice, over the China made junk. Number one reason any ball joint fails: is boot damaged. Boots are damged if, not removed during the install procedure. Number two reason: is blow to ball joint with BFH, done to pop off BJ (very bad practice). Damages boot, boot seat/seal area and often ball joint itself. Number three: is miles of use. Which if any component of front end loose: i.e. wheel bearings, R&P, R&P bushings and or TRE. Excessive force is transferred to ball joints. This results in premature failure! Use of oversize tires, ploy bushing also transfer more shock/force, which may slightly reduce useful life.

I agree with most of your opinions. In my case my LC is garage kept, adult driven less than 10k miles a year, oem size tires, and is a rust free -southern owned grocery getter. I have 2 UZJ100 land cruisers so you may call me a snob for demanding oem when available and if not… get Moog or Napa (for front end). Yes, they are more expensive but my gosh the labor cost far exceeds the variance of the parts cost. Also the land cruiser specialty shop here in little rock said his experience with 555 was similar to mine so yea I won’t buy them again. Regards Wooooo pig sooooooeee

@@Duckman501 I see many 100 series and 200 series. Since Toyota/Lexus LC/ LX 98 up is only vehicles I OWN ( only 3 today, as I sold 2 recently), restore (1 ea. yr) or work on (about 70 a year) for others over the past 20 years. I see many 555 LBJ that have failed which have been installed by others (none of my installs have failed, which I been installing for about 7 years). In every case the boots are damage (hole). Ask your Little Rock shop: if they removed boot before pressing in? This is key! If not they'll use a press cup 1 size up. In every case when I see hole in boot. When I've asked if they did remove boot first, they did not! Also ask your LR shop, if the failed 555 had a hole in boot? I'm all about OEM, and when clients are willing to spent the extra ~$400 (part), it's what I use. When we do R&R lower control arm, which is only way to get OEM ball joint. We usually also press in a new #2 bushing into frame. So cost end up considerately more than just an aftermarket ball joint. I can't speak to NAPA or Moog ball joints, as I don't see them. But if made in China, I would not use.
