Thank you all for the help on that mystery shell. After some help and debate, I think I found a scorched mussel 😃

It's so fun! I am used to going to the beach up in NJ, but the beaches down here in FL are THE BEST!

Happy Birthday, Beach Angel! Words cannot possibly tell you what you have given to me with your beautiful seashell videos! You've made me laugh when I wanted to cry and given me hope for a brighter tomorrow. I am forever in your debt, because, as you well know, we mermaids live as long as there is foam on the waves! That looked like a juvenile Portugeuse Man O'War! Its rentacles would have been buried in tge sand under the body. If I'm right (or if it's a jellyfish) you were saved a serious sting! Even a young one of those guys can ruin your day! Please, folks, NEVER dig under an unidentified gelatinous mass unless you KNOW it's safe to do so! I was a ranger at Gulf Islands National Seashore on Pensacola Beach, Florida and I've been stung by both of those critters and it's NOT pleasant! This is a really great way to spend a birthday. I'll be having mine in October and am thinking maybe a trip is in order to celebrate! Okay, that is almost definitely a very immature Man O' War!!! PLEASE LET THEM ALONE! Those you have found are washed ashore by the waves and their tentaclez, which get buried, can be LETHAL! They don't grow their "sails" until they're older, but the whitish fleshy knobs on top of them are the bydfing sails. The deep "veins" radiating out from their center are key to identifying these little monsters. Thst would be one bad way to spend your birthday, in the Emergency Room! I'm hoping you don't find another. If I may, dear Angel, may I add another rule to your list of don'ts and that is, until you are ABSOLUTELY SURE what sort of live critter it is, do not touch it! I've seen so many people's vacations ruined by jellyfish and young and adult Man O' War! Please don't be next! I'm so excited to see all the live shelled critters and, my personal favorite, sea stars, and the prickly cockle was very interesting, too! Beautiful olive! Yay, another 10 for the pelicans team in synchronous diving! So much fun, tbough you nearly scared me silly! I think the jelly-like thing is a type of anemone but good advice to not mess with things you're not sure are safe. I've seen a man-o-war on the East Coast. Quite beautiful and not a jelly fish! It's a siphonophore and is actually 4 different little systems working together. Neat creatures. I saw something else purple on the East Coast when I went. I'll have to check out the footage and see if I can figure out what it is! I hope your gardens are coming along nicely ❤️

Yeah, we used to get them up on the northwestern beaches quite often when I was a lifeguard and I often came in contact with hapless swimmers who had tangled with them, too. I know them to be siphonophores, as well. After I became a ranger, working in the emergency station on the radio in the telecommunications room, we were trained in first aid and had to learn about jellies, the anemones and the Man O' War class. We didn't get them often, but we learned very quickly that they are definitely nothing to mess with! The wrong type of anemone can put a whup on you, too! If they have tentacles spread out like sunrays, it's safe to assume it's an anemone, but even then, you should not mess with them, as some species can pack a wallop and inject toxins! Better safe than screaming in pain! If someone has an underlying medical condition, that whole group of bad boys, jellyfish included, can kill. By the way, there are marine worms that can give a really bad sting, along with some species of sea slugs. Best to stick with the shells (cones not included). Didn't mean to contradict you, love, just protect you and your viewers. Personally, you scared me silly! I was actually screaming at the phone, "STOP! DON'T TOUCH THAT, SHARMON!" Just keeping it real at the beach!

I live in Hendry county and haven't been back to Fort Myers beach after Ian. It broke my heart to see the Pier and everything around it go, including the devastation on Sanibel. Both dairy queens(core memories for me)will be severely missed and the Pier shop and the nostalgic community. But you have inspired me to go back and do some shelling and exploring. ❤

Sadly the islands will never be the same - but there are lots of things that never change. Like how beautiful the beaches are. And we have more and more restaurants and resorts opening so things are getting better and better 😃

Happy to have found your shelling videos. I lived 3 blocks from Atlantic Beach Florida for 2 years and went shelling all the time. My favorite time was right after a tropical storm or hurricane...I have some amazing shells and sea glass. After hurricane Frances I moved 50 minutes away and haven't been back to see the ocean in years. I just feel it's too far of a drive for me. Happy to spend time watching you shell and learning things I never knew about shells. ❤

Thank you so very much! A few other people suggested anemone. I wish I knew what kind. And thank you for the mussel ID! I thought a scorched mussel but I'll look again. The ribbed mussel looks like a mussel and a mossy arc had a baby - LOL!

And the Banded Tulip; the bottom of the shell is actually the front end of the shell. Happy Birthday Sharmon! I’m glad you had a wonderful day!🥳🎂🎈🎉 I was lucky enough this year that I got to spend my birthday on the beach in Panama City. We stayed a few days there then went down to Clearwater Beach. I finally found a tulip shell. I also got to go to the Florida State Strawberry Festival. If you have never gone I highly suggest it. It was a lot of fun and the strawberries are so yummy! My last day in Florida I had the most amazing shell day. I found at least 30 sand dollars all collectible. I also found out that the apple murex shells have a mating season which was the time I was there. I managed to save at least 30 some live apple murex shells and put them in the water as they were all on the higher rack line. I also found my very first baby’s ear by total surprise since I found it on the highest rack line as I was walking back to my car. It was my best day ever shelling and I was at Sand Key Beach.

I love surprises! I remember my first baby's ear. It was upside down and I knew exactly what it was. They aren't easy to find down here but apparently in the Carolina's they have tons of them. I'm so glad you had such a good shell hunting experience!

I think scorched mussel is the mystery shell - which makes sense. I don't find all that many mussels so I don't have a good catalog in my head yet!

Happy birthday!!!! Was that a little kitten paw in front of that first live lightening welk? I just love the live critters. What better way to celebrate ones birthday. Love the calico crabs, precious. Love the giant Atlantic cockleshells, I always think of a trinket box. Lots of beautiful lightening welks. Again I'll tell you how much I appreciate you picking up what garbage you can. I wish everyone would. I was watching inlet boy out of the Carolinas. The beach he was on was just covered in garbage. He couldn't haul it all out. I was so sad to see all that garbage. Thanks for taking us on a wonderful walk and shelling expedition. Looking forward to the next one. Have a great week.

Oh poor Inlet Boy. I was on a beach on the East Coast and there was a wee bit of trash there too. I took quite a bit off Sanibel yesterday as well. Maybe I can inspire others to do the same 😃

That brown squishy thing buried in the sand looked to me like an anemone with its tentacles all pulled in! Belated birthday wishes, hope you continued to have a wonderful day after such a beautiful start!

Most of the guesses on that critter were anemone. How do I go to the beach every week for 4 years and still find things I've never seen before. I ❤️ the beach!!

@@SWFBeachLife btw, no need to worry about touching those, although a research biologist once cautioned me that people who are allergic to beestings might need to be careful. Generally, the nematocysts on anemones won't penetrate your skin, although you may feel the tentacles "sticking' to you slightly as you brush them. I know of a scuba instructor who convinced people of the harmlessness of those huge tropical anemones by sliding down a strap of her bathing suit and putting a breast right into one. I guess that would be convincing!

Yes I do think it's a mussel of some sort. Apparently I need to pick them up more often as it didn't look like a mussel to me. After a little nudge I think it's a scorched mussel. Neat little shells!

Hi Sharmon, and a very Happy Birthday to you and many more! My birthday was on the 10th so we're both March babies! I sure enjoyed this shelling adventure. You brought so many beautiful treasures home. Hard to pick a favorite. But of the living critters, I must say that I greatly enjoyed the little calico crabbies. Of course, I happen to think crabs are very cute in their own way. Do you ever see blue crabs at the beaches you frequent? As far as the mystery shell, I don't know what it is, but the shape says it might be some kind of a mussel. Have a wonderful week!

Someone else said mussel, so I think scorched mussel might be the culprit. Another shell to add to the repertoire! And our birthdays are a day apart! Happy birthday pisces!

Your little mystery shell looks very much like a zebra muscle like we have up here in the Mississippi river in Wisconsin. I think they are invasive. Happy Birthday and what could be more perfect than looking for shells. Enjoy!
