Thank you so much for posting the 4 part videos on how to start a planted tank it really is helping me understand the how what and why in easy terms. I plan to add another tank and I want to do a low light planted 55 gallon in the early summer. I am enjoying your videos and they are really helpful. ✨

back when i was a kid and actually bought stuff from petco i got some amazon swords for my 10gal-fresh and there was just a tiny little leaf with a tiny little red hair coming out. it looked like a dying baby leaf blade to me ( very new to hobby at the time) and it turned out it was java fern. Well the Amazon sword barely survived a year... but that TINY (pinky nail sized) java fern... COMPLETELY took over my tank. Which i liked/allowed. I dont know how familiar anyone here is with cactus, but i would compare these to prickly pears - in regards to care/hardiness. They're the kind of cactus you can just literally rip off a leaf from and haphazardly throw it anywhere on the ground and in no time have a fully established plant.

Me, too! I have a 36" bookshelf tank coming in any day now. I've got all sorts of plans and can't wait to get started. First I'm going to make my own undergravel filter and stash some bioballs in it as part of my biofilter system. Then weedblocker fabric on top and then decide between Amazonia and organic soil. You are the one who got me serious enough to start throwing money at this hobby :-)

Echinodorus Hormanii, Looks like really really big Jungle Val, it also can grow big rhizomes that will make daughter plants. Needs a big tank mostly to itself, the other nice thing about them is they're rather tolerant of cool conditions being from Southern Uruguay and Northern Argentina so they would be good in a cool-water tank for Goldfish.

Tiger Lotus seems to do well on average light. I have the red and some Unusual purple-brown with green metallic mottling. Also the tan N. stellata..that's more lily pad than leaf..but its nice. I'm hoping to return and say Bolbitis heudelotii is soooooo easy. But,I just got it and we will see...

  • @TheWaterBox

They work fine. From what I hear the Beamworks hi outputs work well but I haven't tried them. Just the low light stuff.

I might have posted before, but I'm sort of old,so give me a break...But! Giant Hygro is usually a good grower under something as simple as double 40 watt shop lights. Java moss is unkillable..unless algae gets on it. So,low light really best unless you have a very light fish load and bright tank where it can do well too. Those two make for a top ten as I agree on all your other choices.

@@TheWaterBox I'm still trying to find a food the fish really gobble up besides bloodworms. Only feed those 3 times per week. Bug Bites seems to have a lot of filler in it the fish won't touch and same with my flake food. So much just sinks to the bottom untouched. I'm kinda glad I accidentally got snails or idk what would eat all that uneaten food. The Zebra loach seems to only likes shrimp pellets or snails but the Kuhli loaches destroy anything on the bottom. I've tried a few different pellets for top feeders with no success, any that you would recommend for Black Neons ?

Anubias and Crypts. The only plants I haven't killed in low lighting. And to give perspective on my take of low light, think Walmart 10 gallon LED kit lighting. They are both thriving and have more than doubled in size. and space. So much so that they support a school of 50 guppies in a 10 gallon tank...... Just saying.
