Low-Effort Woodwind Doubling: The Clarinet

Музыка

Every sax player's nemesis unless you're Eddie Daniels! We're talking about the Clarinet!
We DOUBLIN'!!!!
So yeah, Low Effort Woodwind Doubling...(L.E.W.D. ....heh heh) it's not really a series getting too deep into technical aspects or repertoire. It's more about finding different woodwinds and their unique voices and having fun watching me stumble around my words talking about how awesome they are, and what your average run-of-the-mill creative musician could use them for!
This episode, we bring out the Clarinet in a variety of materials and keys! We got Bb and Eb to talk about and we're gonna go through everything you need to get yourself started....clarinet isn't as scary as you think!
We jump around quite a bit...I don't use a script so everything is kind of a stream of consciousness type of thing, be we get there in the end!
JAZZLORD: (n) A gender-neutral honorific describing anyone who is an enthusiast of the music (player or not...doesn't matter) and isn't a giant, steaming bag of cockroach farts about it.

I have a Ridenour clarinet also. Plays well and use it in a Dixieland band.

Saved a bunch of them for posterity, but I want to try something new. It seems a bit extreme, but I feel it's for the best. No more copyright claims on my videos.

Why do you keep saying the eb/bb 1 0 0 - 1 0 0 it's not correct? We clarinet player use it all the times! There are even specific written etudes based upon the use of the "fork position" (as we call it in italy) on both Magnani, Jean-Jean and Lefevre! Out of tune it's just a matter of lips and sometimes instrument setup! Beyond that, I love your new series!

@@Albanothemadman let me guess, saxophone player pretending to be a clarinet teacher? Well, the opposite could be right too... We should need a "low effort woodwinds teachers series" as well! I am all good, but you are doing great! You look great, even younger. And you sound as always amazing! No low effort in your playing!

The 100|100 fork fingering works for Bb but is too sharp for Eb… or concert Db as he said in the beginning of the video. I believe Magnani played full boehms like many old Italian masters so he had access to the superior xox|ooo fingering for chalumeau Eb. Lefevre was from before the Boehm clarinet… 100|100 was not possible, it was a different fork fingering with a different sound on a different clarinet system which almost certainly didnt have the side key Eb yet. 100|100 Eb sounds bad and is out of tune, and is used most often used incorrectly by sax doublers (who are the target audience of this video, not players encountering contrived specific cases in the very advanced Jean-jean etudes). You are not the target audience.

@@ghoulcaster I don't think I am the wrong target. It's always good to hear other perspective on how to teach others how to play an instrument. As a teacher for both saxophone and clarinet I feel this content is just great for me. By the way, me and Joe "know each other" through the web. We go way back since Jam of the week times, so that´s why I feel I can chat with him, since we had so much fun through commenting our videos for a long time! @Albanothemadman is an INCREDIBLE player on every instrument I heard him play. He always find a way to make what he wants with whatever thing is in his hands. What you are saying may be true for your instrument, but not the truth just because in your clarinet the 100 I100 position works like that. My experience is that Eb flat is great while Bb is quite flat. Of course it will never be perfekt, it is just a solution for quick passages. The Magnani etudes is most based on Eb, för instance. The Magnani method I used was based on simple Boehm, not complete (you can tell from the picture AND fingering chart at the very beginning of the massive book)

If it's too sharp, you can add another finger so you play it with 1 and 2 of the right hand. If it's too flat, use just 2 (your middle finger) instead.
