Low Cost Solar Pumping System
A simple, low-cost solar pumping system for irrigation using available and proven components. No batteries, no electronics. Now that solar panels cost under $1 per watt, this is an attractive alternative to small gasoline-powered pumps. Suitable for irrigating up to 1/2 hectare from a surface water source.

I commend you on your job sir. We built a similar system in namibia but on a smaller scale when I was there building communication towers. It's amazing the cooperation you get from the locals when you provide them with a means to get water to their village without having to carry it in buckets daily.
Simple, inexpensive and robust! I learn a lot. Thank you.
Thats amazing! I would never have thought it would work so well! Good work!
Thank you You get me inspired in my project. You just give me the solution for all my irrigation problems
Many thanks for sharingSimple yet effective, this is the sort of incremental mechanisation deep Africa requires
Inspirational work John Di Marco! Best wishes to Luanda good luck on this worthwhile project.
Very Important simple Technic.....Thank u sir for the simple cheap demo u have presented to the world ......Salute From uganda......sir
Hi John, greeting's... The technology is useful when it reaches to the poor people at affordable cost and easy to use. You done that job.. The idea of moving flexibility is appreciate. Thanks..

who invented this?It's amazing.
excellent idea ****** it's movable and place any where and can be secured at night or in storm****
That is really a wonderful help for poor farmers. Hats off to you.
I'm gonna try this in the Adirondacks of upstate NY...I already have some cheap "panels"...but I shouldn't need more than 100 watts of power with a small brush pump. Just need to find a small powered pump...everything else is pretty straight forward.
Very simple,effective,reliable and affordable.
wow never thought that you could use solar for water pump.. great idea..
Thank you very much. My next project in Japan. Big garden and very small river .......
Hi Bill, I suppose similar pumps could be salvaged from other cars, too. I will be happy to get informed about your experience once you did it, as I am planning to build something like that for a tiny farm in Bulgaria...
great video, great man! thanks for your service to the planet and those people :)
All projects nice and learning more new technology for me Thanks all' PROMOD
Great video and well done on helping those folks overcome their water pumping issues.Would love some feedback on how long the pump lasted.I"m about to use a similar pump on my property in Australia however they recommend that they should be used in 30 minute cycles.Would appreciate any updates you have, maybe another vid if you get time.
I measure water pumps output the same way , good work
well done sir you did a great work for poor people i ll also utilize this pump with my modules.

this is great. just what I was looking for. very informative. thanks
Great Job. Few months back I too assembled one Seaflo make bilge pump (1100 GPH) for country boats for draining leakage waters that too works fine.I inch pipe outlet too pumping a large amount of water @ 3.5 Amp @12 Volt connected with 14.4 Ah battery.Too tested on one 165 watt solar panel gives optimum power output .Your pump is 4000 GPH gives a good water pumping.i too doubt about head capacity of pump.Surpised about its output . Great idea for small farmers for irrigation
Do you have a documentation of your work? I'd like to use it as a reference for our rural area project.
Really good educating keep doing those good project for all that poor people thank you
Just an idea to suggest , if more power needed probably is good idea to double the solar panels number by having two fold-able same size frames holding panels using the exiting mobile transportation ( like opening two pages of a book) .When work finishes the frame could placed on top of each other ...
Great Solar trailors, it's cool!
Excellent. Will keep in touch
Excellent work
what output of the panels that would run this 12v bump? I mean how many amps or watts that we must feed to the bump? this is so great thx
great vid .....have u tried two or more pumps in series (closed system) to improve head. i am planning to use some pvc pipe/spigot fitted over second pump intake (remove screen) and used as inline boost. air lock may be a issue but may be worth a try
Sir have you considered using check valves in your outflow line I believe you can increase your head if you use check valves have you thought of this
did you put all 6 of the solar panels in series. or paralell. One pnl will do 30 vdc low amps
Fantastic. Thank you. Greetings from Portugal.

Pratically possible and easy to operate. Solar energy can be used with couple of batteries and 12 volt dc motor is running a donkey pump. This arrangement can work in the evenings. More reliable with additional cost. Moveable arranangement is a good idea.
Hi, I would like to know what are the characteristics of the pump, like type, power, maximum flow ...
I'd like to use it as a reference for our rural area project, Where endured lot of suffering for little drinking water. Have you any documentation of your work, sir? Thank You.
Beautiful presentation
I would like an update. It would seem that you might need an extra panel or two for maximum power since the pump draws about 400w (and the panels max are 400w). In a perfect orientation of the Sun with clear skies, you panels would work at full power but perfection is rare with solar panels. Also, did the pump hold up?

Or 2-4 metal sheets on hinges, to reflect sunlight onto the panels....
Ik zie vandaag 26 April een foto van tulpen in Tubbergen. De bollen worden binnen een paar weken geoogst. Is datgene wat overblijft geschikt om Bokashi van te maken?
You did a good job sir...
Why not add some sheets of metal on hinges, to reflect more light onto the solar panels, and maybe use two pumps at once? I mean, metal sheets are cheaper than the solar panels, right? A bit more energy might be enough to fuel another pump.
I like your style. Good work.
thanks and I appreciate
excellent work!
i love it..
Excellent job sir
That's a great job 👍
amazing.. nice work!
so nice and thank you sir for that video .
great work, subscribed
Sir, do you still need a battery on you pump system? Jun m thanks hope you can feedback soon
great job!
The one used in the video is it an automatic or non-automatic pump
Thats amazing, where can I buy that specific pump?
can this pump be used for contineous operation?? like 6-8 hrs per day?? plz reply me as i want to adopt this system to my farms...
great job.

Is the pump conected directly to the PV panels? Doesn't it need an inverter?

@haveanicetime

If you mean the head delivered by the pump [H], it depends on the type of the pump, the characteristic curve of it which provides you with the delivered head at a certain flow rate [Q] in cubic meter/sec....you should know the required minimum distance you want to fill it with water, then you go to select the type of the pump, then you find out the catalog in which you can find the characteristic curve of it and the required power consumption so you can determine the required motor power and then you can determine the number of PV panels :).

depending on the size of the pipe or hose..if you intend to extend the pipe to 1-2km, the pipe's size should be reduced to 50-75% or less,,,the smaller the pipe, the stronger the pressure and the farther it can run...
hello sir/mam if i need more information about this how can i get plz?

It's very good system how cost it is
You have pump like this for Underground water
now build a water tower, fill it with your pump, enjoy running water.
So nice i like it
I suppose a marine bilge pump of that sort is not designed for permanent use as required for irrigation. Also, replacing the pump once a year seems to be quite un-ecological. Can't you find a pump that's made for petmanent use? For example something that is made for water circulation in a houses plumbing?

+Ali Mubiru Recently I saw in another youtube video a possible solution: for a pump they use a water pump from the water cooling system of a Toyota (I believe it was) car. This is a tiny pump, submergible (!), with a quite intelligent, simple design, and it should be available for very litle money, perhaps even for free from scrap. However, I suppose it will be sufficient only for a small garde, unless you find a way to install teo or thee if them un parallel or so...

Yes is a video of a Toyota Prius Pump very Powerful for so small all electric 12v , I am looking in wrecking yards for one myself to Implement in my Irrigation here on small farm in nor cal :)
I heart we went to the Moon in 1968 and we are able to make now a pump that will last only one year. That mean we are progressing? There is a pump in Los Angeles that it has not stop since the 1800's I do not mean to be negative, it just bug me that we have to work so hard to but craps that will not last much. Why don't we try to make things that last?

TiMn8eR911 You have to remember this low cost SIMPLE pumping system was designed to work in very poor areas like Senegal. . Not a lot of used Ford prius to rob pumps off of and buying new would be cost prohibitive. Only thing I would change ( remember keep it simple , almost zero maintenance) would be to add more panels to increase the efficiency of the system on cloudy days, along with some way of storing water. Storage could be as elaborate as building a raise retention pond or as simple as a tank of some sort. That would allow water storage for use at night or during extended cloudy periods.
