Low Cost Solar Pumping System

A simple, low-cost solar pumping system for irrigation using available and proven components. No batteries, no electronics. Now that solar panels cost under $1 per watt, this is an attractive alternative to small gasoline-powered pumps. Suitable for irrigating up to 1/2 hectare from a surface water source.

I commend you on your job sir. We built a similar system in namibia but on a smaller scale when I was there building communication towers. It's amazing the cooperation you get from the locals when you provide them with a means to get water to their village without having to carry it in buckets daily.

I'm gonna try this in the Adirondacks of upstate NY...I already have some cheap "panels"...but I shouldn't need more than 100 watts of power with a small brush pump. Just need to find a small powered pump...everything else is pretty straight forward.

Great Job. Few months back I too assembled one Seaflo make bilge pump (1100 GPH) for country boats for draining leakage waters that too works fine.I inch pipe outlet too pumping a large amount of water @ 3.5 Amp @12 Volt connected with 14.4 Ah battery.Too tested on one 165 watt solar panel gives optimum power output .Your pump is 4000 GPH gives a good water pumping.i too doubt about head capacity of pump.Surpised about its output . Great idea for small farmers for irrigation

Pratically possible and easy to operate. Solar energy can be used with couple of batteries and 12 volt dc motor is running a donkey pump. This arrangement can work in the evenings. More reliable with additional cost. Moveable arranangement is a good idea.

I would like an update. It would seem that you might need an extra panel or two for maximum power since the pump draws about 400w (and the panels max are 400w). In a perfect orientation of the Sun with clear skies, you panels would work at full power but perfection is rare with solar panels. Also, did the pump hold up?

Why not add some sheets of metal on hinges, to reflect more light onto the solar panels, and maybe use two pumps at once? I mean, metal sheets are cheaper than the solar panels, right? A bit more energy might be enough to fuel another pump.

If you mean the head delivered by the pump [H], it depends on the type of the pump, the characteristic curve of it which provides you with the delivered head at a certain flow rate [Q] in cubic meter/sec....you should know the required minimum distance you want to fill it with water, then you go to select the type of the pump, then you find out the catalog in which you can find the characteristic curve of it and the required power consumption so you can determine the required motor power and then you can determine the number of PV panels :).

I suppose a marine bilge pump of that sort is not designed for permanent use as required for irrigation. Also, replacing the pump once a year seems to be quite un-ecological. Can't you find a pump that's made for petmanent use? For example something that is made for water circulation in a houses plumbing?

+Ali Mubiru Recently I saw in another youtube video a possible solution: for a pump they use a water pump from the water cooling system of a Toyota (I believe it was) car. This is a tiny pump, submergible (!), with a quite intelligent, simple design, and it should be available for very litle money, perhaps even for free from scrap. However, I suppose it will be sufficient only for a small garde, unless you find a way to install teo or thee if them un parallel or so...

I heart we went to the Moon in 1968 and we are able to make now a pump that will last only one year. That mean we are progressing? There is a pump in Los Angeles that it has not stop since the 1800's I do not mean to be negative, it just bug me that we have to work so hard to but craps that will not last much. Why don't we try to make things that last?

TiMn8eR911 You have to remember this low cost SIMPLE pumping system was designed to work in very poor areas like Senegal. . Not a lot of used Ford prius to rob pumps off of and buying new would be cost prohibitive. Only thing I would change ( remember keep it simple , almost zero maintenance) would be to add more panels to increase the efficiency of the system on cloudy days, along with some way of storing water. Storage could be as elaborate as building a raise retention pond or as simple as a tank of some sort. That would allow water storage for use at night or during extended cloudy periods.
