This deserves a prize... they did not hide racism but put it out there along with all the stereotypes from both sides. This was building bridges the wives showing how the ideal relationship should be.... while the hardheaded men (both) shoulw how alike they are despite the colour differences. Do not take it the wrong way.

this show is the complete opposite of racist, it in fact highlights the narrow mindedness and stupidity of it, by portraying two men who due inherent predjudices just accept the negatives told about a people of a different race, but soon realise that they are not that different after all and end up becoming good friends

Heya, snap!! Grew up in the UK watching this and so much more comedy and could see the lessons. As a young one I could see exactly what was being said and never liked the name calling or labelling either side. Had lots of friends from other countries and we all just got on. Respect is key but comedy can tell it how it is. It becomes inclusive not exclusive. I wonder if I had lived in other countries growing up I would have had the same respect.

I've been watching a lot of these episodes lately, and I have noticed that the comments sections seem to be full of comments from people who completely missed the point. Anyone who thinks this show is racist should watch this episode. The parts where Barbie was crying and when Arthur and Jacko refuse Eddie's offer of a drink are especially poignant. Just because this show contains a racist character does not mean it is racist. It is not PC, but it is not racist. It dealt with the subject of racism head on rather than by cowardly political correctness. Another good episode to watch is 'Voodoo', in which Eddie is absolutely distraught when he thinks he has caused his friend Bill's death. He deeply humiliates himself by dancing naked in the woods in a desperate attempt to save his friend's life. In later episodes, it is clear that Bill is Eddie's best friend, though he would never admit it.

Huge Bartlett, well said Hugh👍👋It is the case though that some people undoubtedly would have been either picked on, or felt some degree of humiliation, if they were subjected to some of the comedic racist commentary being in effect ‘tried out’ on them for a bit of laugh when indeed they are the butt end of the joke at work, in public or at the pub etc. It also really depends upon individual tolerances and temperance amongst other things, which is not something we ought to get bogged down with 4 decades after the fact. My view is simply that none of these programs from any era depicting whatever the case may be, should ever be removed, or made to be defaced and edited by such censorship that would greatly affect the authenticity of history and culture, societal or anthropological practices of any time, as to do so is tantamount to destroying historical archives.

We all loved this as kids in the early 1970s. And yes, some of the language ruins it in modern day (as in it is now understandably and rightly unaccaptable). BUT we need to remember the central tennet of the show. Which is still is very valid: The two ladies get on as normal people, while the two husbands express the worst in each other's cultures and prove them selves idiots with their then modernized secular 'superstitions' about each other to the two wives who have to suffer the two clowns . I loved the line about the ''color problem'': ''Get a bigger ariel"! Eddie's little balding dark haired buddy Arfur, seems to have the strangest kind of comb-over which I still can't work out how he acheives. Genius! And it always seemed to me that by the end of each show, the joke was usually on Eddie as, for eg, in this episode, everyone at the end all laugh at him!

There were a number of TV shows in the 60s and 70s which criticised racism in a way which superficial people don't get, whether they are left wing or right wing politically. This was one, Steptoe and Son was another, Till Death Us Do Part was an even better example. They were of their time, written by people who were partly trying to change the racism in British society through humour and partly trying to make a living.

I remember watching this when it first came out. I always rooted for the black guy to come out on top (I am white), which he did. as Eddie was a bit of a tit. If it was racist then it was equally racist against all, showing individuals who could be flawed as well as redeemable, regardless of colour. I think that was it's aim. Also, despite appearing to be racialist, Eddie comes over as someone who is fundamentally warm, able to good naturedly take a bit of stick and someone who would stand and defend his black neighbour if the chips were down. A great show, only critised by the real racialists.

Don't know how I ended up watching this ! Got recommended when I started to binged watch the ''Dad's Army '' TV series and what a legendary comedy show and having a new admiration for British TV networks that used to produce gold ! Got to admit now that not everything old is gold after watching this ! And these old house warming parties might be to blame for all these mixed races and faces in the crowds of UK and US !

I’m white but my neighbour in my old flat was a black guy , he used to borrow every episode of this show that was on video. He thought it was funny, because in places it is. Political correctness gone mad has caused more problems than it solves. I’m in no way racist by the way , I have a mixed raced child ( not with the neighbour ) i love to bits.
